Too Darned Hot: A Late August Weekend In Houston

Spent the weekend in Houston to celebrate a friend's birthday. Between going out to eat and the ridiculous heat and humidity, I didn't get many photos. I'm surprised I got the few that I did. One "fun" thing about photographing Houston in the summer, if you're driving a car (and who isn't?), when you get out to take a shot you have to wait for your lens to de-fog...a cold lens from inside an air-conditioned car mixed with the hot, humid air outside equals instant condensation. The joys of the swamp!

Thanks to the ridiculous heat and humidity, the only time I had a heatstroke in life so far was in May 2011 in Houston.

I was stupid and ignorant enough to stroll around the downtown park in the middle of the day...maybe it was the food I ate afterwards...wait food ain't cause heatstroke so definitely that outdoor thing.

May is nothing compared to August.

2011 was the year of the drought. 300 million trees killed in Texas, millions in Houston alone.

Yea that's why I let my guard down and strolled around under the May sun, never August in any northern hemisphere.

I never knew 2011 was the year of the drought in Texas until you just told me.

I lived through 2.5 summers in Houston. That was more than enough for me. I avoid visiting from May - October. But I like seeing these photos, especially from the South Montrose area with the beautiful live oaks around the Menil Collection.

Great pictures from Houston!

Very nice set of pictures!

I plan on visiting Texas in october. Will be the first time of my life in Texas and Southern USA.

The San Antonio Riverwalk caught my attention. It looks stunning and very enjoyable to do it by foot.

Can you tell me where is the best place to park my car at the lowest possible price?...or even free by any chance...

Thanks!

I don't know San Antonio very well...but from looking at this parking website, the Frost Bank Garage on N. Flores Street looks very reasonable and well located near the Cathedral and just 3 blocks from an entrance to the River Walk. EXCEPT it closes at 8PM. I parked once at metered street parking on the south side of downtown for free in the evening. I think it was after 6PM.

October is usually nice overall, but it's a transition month so it can be uncomfortably warm and humid, or sunny and mild with cool nights, especially from mid-month onward. May through September are reliably brutal though. I lived there, too, for years, and it was tough to deal with the humidity.

It's not much better in Austin. At least in Houston most summers have plenty of rain to keep things green and tropical looking. Not so here in Austin, where the primary color in summer is brown.
