But I would imagine they would have to seek federal aid, as any kind of idea of relieving congestion at Pearson would involve a pretty significant terminal being built, as well as large apron space.

Assuming of course that a western GTA airport is deemed to be the ideal secondary airport for Toronto, rather than the long talked about Pickering airport.

With Hamilton already there, and most of the population of the GTA and, for that matter, Ontario west of Pearson, it makes sense that Hamilton should be expanded before Pickering is built.

To take any pressure off Toronto, I'm imagining an airport serving millions of passengers a year. I'm not sure that a totally new build isn't better than what Hamilton already offers (basically a runway). I think east of the city serves the purpose better than 2 airports on the west side.

So, a completely new build will be better than building up an existing one with the necessary infrastructure?

Well, if the location isn't the best, of course it is. The only thing you aren't building from new at Hamilton is a runway anyway. A new from scratch airport would likely have 3 runways. Hamilton has 2, one of which is very short. I'm not sure Hamilton has the land readily available to add a terminal large enough to handle millions of people a year, as well as possibly a third runway and to extend the shorter of the 2 current runways. Current cargo and passenger operations are all pretty tight together, I envision Hamilton would put a new terminal across the airfield.

Saving the cost of building one runway out of an entire airport project doesn't really matter if the professional people who look at this stuff determines a new airport on the east side of the GTA is preferred to 2 on the west side.

There is plenty of room for terminal expansion as well as well as extending the second runway. Tradeport says they will extend it when need and the ROI makes sense. The City owns a great deal of land for buffer and expansion purposes.

Wether Hamilton is a better candidate to expand than build new in Pickering is a different matter. Would definitely need better transportation access to Hamilton though.

Uh, so close to the 1 million mark....

2019 numbers are in & @flyyhm
is celebrating 3 years of unprecedented growth! Last year, 955,373 passengers used the Airport! A 32% growth vs 2018, 60% vs 2017 & a remarkable 187% vs 2016. Cargo is also up 21% over the last 3 year years!

So close. Just 44,627 passengers short. That is 123 passengers a day more and they would have gone over 1 million. If Air Canada had stayed with 150 seats a day available or if Norwegian could have flown 7 days a week with a 186 seat aircraft that they had hoped, they would have go over 1 million passenger.

SteelTown Jan 23, 2020 7:23 PM

With the new routes to the Martimes I'm sure YHM will get 1 million for 2020.

32% growth, not bad. The start of the year it seemed like we’d barely see 10% growth. This should put us ahead of Thunder Bay.

Not sure. Westjet released the majority of its summer schedule today. The booking system only shows 2x daily as of now.

The new DHL Facility @ YHM. Hard to see but the outer wall footings are in and they have started on the interior post footings.

Construction of the new outer cargo road. The old road will be closed to allow the aircraft to come right up to the building.

Something new that will most likely need it's own page.

Fowler's Landing

This is across from the airport right on the south east corner of Airport Road and the HWY 6 Ramp. This sign has just gone up and there is no other info on this project. It looks like they have not summited anything official to the city. in the past few months they have been clearing the land.

I thought David Braley owned this property as he had planned a parking facility here at one time, but maybe he sold.
