Original plan: In 2011, a group affiliated with the Redstone Cos. - now TRC Capital Partners - said it was planning a hotel and office tower on the Uptown site. It said the project was contingent on financing and could be underway within a couple of years.

Update: At the end of last year, the developer signed an agreement with a hotel brand and plans to break ground on a full-service hotel in the second or third quarter. The office building has been put on hold until a tenant can be found.

Houston-based Midway has redesigned the luxury hotel it is planning to build downtown, giving the 21-story tower a more sleek, classic look than the modern, whimsical feel it originally had.

The design change was made to give the Hotel Alessandra a more cohesive feel between the exterior and interior space, said Jonathan Brinsden, Midway's CEO, who described the new look as a "modern interpretation of European style." The new design will also give the building a more pedestrian-friendly facade at its ground level.

"There are a lot of iconic buildings that have no response to the pedestrian environment. They turn their back on the street," Brinsden said. "Our philosophy is activating the street."

Midway recently began demolition on the site where the hotel will be built.

The legendary furniture designer not only tipped AN off about the commission, he was also responsible for introducing Ms. Hadid to Suzanne Klein and Edna Meyer-Nelson, the Richland execs who promptly hired the Pritzker Prize winner to plan their mixed-use HQ. No design has been released yet, but we’ll be waiting with bated breath to see what sort of swooping, eccentric forms Zaha cooks up for the project—that is, unless falling oil prices put a lid on this baby before it’s hatched!

New office and retail developments are underway in Spring as thousands of employees start work in the area at Exxon Mobil Corp.'s 385-acre campus and Southwestern Energy Co.'s new headquarters.

Construction of the first building of Springwoods Village CityPlace, a 60-acre mixed-used development, is expected to start in the first quarter of this year.
