City Council members are questioning Mayor Annise Parker's surprise announcement late Wednesday that the city may move its police and courts operations into the Exxon tower downtown.

A deal is far from done, officials cautioned, but the city may lease the 45-story building at 800 Bell from Shorenstein Properties, which has launched a joint venture with Griffin Partners for the "possible redevelopment" of the tower, a Griffin press release said, to house courtrooms and other city needs.

The announcement comes two weeks after Parker pushed the council to vote on the future of the city's police-and-courts buildings, offering a choice between constructing a new "justice complex" or repairing the city's crumbling facilities. With both options ranging from hundreds of millions of dollars to more than $1 billion, and with both requiring voter approval and perhaps even a tax increase to fund, the council balked, punting the item back to Parker.

Just hope that land value is such that they can't afford to infiltrate the area in large quantities. I agree, they are tacky as hell.

I hate that they're destroying a beautiful mid-century masterpiece for another Houston style glass box.

Yeah, I dont understand why they are doing that, they are destroying one of the coolest mid century modern buildings in Houston for another generic glass box, hooray! Cant believe the preservationists arent all over that, guess they cant compete with oil money though.

The new design will also give the building a more pedestrian-friendly facade at its ground level.

Preservationists? Houston? Haha!!!

What I don't get is that sunk a bunch of money into that buildng a few years ago doing some structural work on the entire exterior. It is a shame. My guess is that it could not compete with rents with the other buildings but what a great residential it would make.

No oil money involved in the redevelopment. Shorenstein is real estate only and they're from San Francisco. If anything, it's Facebook dollars.

Exclusive: N.Y. developer unveils plans for massive Kirby mixed-use

New York-based Thor Equities told the Houston Business Journal that it is gearing up to break ground on the $125 million Kirby Collection, a million-plus-square-foot mixed-use project in Upper Kirby, despite the current oil slump.

"The oil issue is a silver lining for us," said Jack Bousquet, a developer at Thor. "We think we'll get more favorable construction costs and some of the competition will fade."

Demolition of the site's former buildings is finished, and construction is set to start in April or May, Bousquet said. It's slated to be complete in the third quarter of 2017.

Speaking of oil slump, the price of WTI is up to over $51 a barrel today (Brent is $56). I can't tell if that's a dead cat bounce, the result of the refinery workers' strike or ISIS threatening Iraq's oil exports. It could be that the cutbacks in the industry are overdone, but for the meantime, I'm enjoying traveling the freeways with fewer heavy fracking vehicles.

You mean 1600 Louisiana? Supposedly it's on hold because Chevron's multi-billion dollar project in Australia.

And 7200 Main is not happening from my knowledge. It seems there was some confusion if it was even a real project.
