The Osborne is gorgeous, but that lobby is spectacular; ornate beyond words!

franktko Jul 30, 2013 3:01 AM

Wow. You have to go to the middle east to see anything like that inside being built in this age...

That's the Osborne, one of the oldest apartment buildings in Manhattan. It was built between 1883-85.

That is absolutely awesome!

It's still cheaper to live in The Osborne then most of the new NYC luxury developments.

SALES: http://streeteasy.com/nyc/building/the-osborne#sales

I'm sure these prices will skyrocket once the Nordstrom tower gets built.
=====================

The Osborne, built between 1883 and 1885 and expanded in 1906 — was the brainchild of the stone contractor Thomas Osborne and is a New York City landmark and has housed greats like Leonard Bernstein and Bobby Short. It was designed by James Ware with wealthy New Yorkers in mind and serves as a kind of Dakota across the street from Carnegie Hall. Each floor had four large apartments richly detailed with touches such as parquet floors, rare wood and plaster mouldings and tiled fireplaces. While some of the original apartments remain intact, about half have been broken up into smaller units.

T lobby serves as a testament to late-19th-century extravagance. The floors are a mix of small mosaic tiles and slabs of varicolored Italian marble. Complementary marble was used for the wainscoting and carved marble recesses with benches. Dancing nudes and intricately decorated archways take the eye to a ceiling done in rich hues of red, blue and gold leaf. Stepping inside one is instantly thrust back a hundred years intime and maybe even further .. Andrew Loyyd Webber eat your heart out …

There is a 3% flip tax.

Update: 225 West 57th Street

Quote:

Visible progress is being made at 225 West 57th Street, where the last buildings are now being deconstructed. Comparing today’s update with the previous photos, the former 225 West 57th has now lost three floors – a standard pace of demolition for an old building of its size, given the site’s extremely urban confines.

Although no news relating to the future Nordstrom Tower has been released in some time, patience is a virtue, and given demolition, plans are clearly progressing. Nearby, The New York Times reported that JDS’s skyscraper at 105 West 57th Street – which will now encompass the former Steinway Hall – will also rise over 1,000 feet in height.

The race is on all along 57th Street, though Extell should be the victor, given 225 West 57th’s 1.3 million square feet of air rights. With on-file permits indicating a height of 1,550 feet, the airspace along the thoroughfare will certainly become more crowded, but Barnett’s super scraper should still take the crown, with plenty of room to spare.

Apparently the tower is in the process of redesign ...

The project is in redesign according a reliable source.

Most likely it has to do with this:

I bet you the re-design has to do with the purchase Extell made a couple weeks ago. The purchase of that narrow Beethoven Piano shop located behind that supermarket being currently being razed!

I am positive that purchase is allowing Barnett to go even more higher while redesigning it by incorporating that newly purchased space into the base of the tower.

NYguy Aug 6, 2013 6:53 PM

I was speculating that could be, because they went from being notified of the construction to being another piece of the puzzle.

Not sure if Barnett has already incorporated this into the tower's footage, but it's another piece of the puzzle in place, though a very small one.

Notification in May of impending excavation:

But whatever the case, I'm sure it's still on schedule. These things often go through some type of redesign anyway, shouldn't be anything too major.

NYguy, it looks as if your screen pics from Google Earth were from about 1,600 feet. On purpose?

No, just close enough to see the sites clearly. It will be very dramatic once those other towers are in place.

JACKinBeantown Aug 14, 2013 7:05 PM

It will look amazingly dramatic!

chris08876 Aug 14, 2013 8:45 PM

20 months to build is pretty quick for a tower of this scale.

antinimby Aug 14, 2013 10:08 PM

^ Re-read that carefully. 20 months only for excavation and foundation. That actually is a long time.

JayPro Aug 14, 2013 10:24 PM

Meaning that this tower's is gonna be a total
Be. He. Moth.

Submariner Aug 15, 2013 12:15 AM

Why will it take that long?

One thing you will notice from looking at this image, One57 shifts mostly to the 57th street side. If this tower is shifted in a similar way to the north, 58th street, it could save at least a portion of the views from both towers.

A-MAZ-ING! Finally another "real" tallest is on it's way, all I'm hoping is that if it is going to take this long it better look spectacular. :)

I too am expecting spectacular. The demo is just about complete and we have seen no rendering thus far, so yes it better scream NEW YORK CITY!:D

I just hope they will not shorten this tower, they were thinking about it after Sandy hit NYC.
