NEW YORK | Bertelsmann Building | 733 FT / 233 M | 42 FLOORS | 1990
Overlooked New York
BERTELSMANN BUILDING 1990 Postmodern - 31st Tallest Building in the City. (Description from Wikipedia) Bertelsmann Building, originally known as 1540 Broadway, is a 42-story, 733 foot (223 m) office tower in Times Square in Manhattan, New York City, standing at West 45th Street. The building is the North American headquarters of Bertelsmann. Started in 1989 and finished in 1990, the tower is one of the few in Times Square to contain class A office space. It contains the world's largest music store, a Virgin Megastore. Also found in the tower is Planet Hollywood's first Official All Star Café. In the 1990s the Bertelsmann subsidiary of Random House looked to build a skyscraper across 45th Street from its parent and be connected to it via a neon-lighted bridge across 45th Street connecting them. When the deal fell through it built the Random House Tower 10 blocks uptown. http://www.nyc-architecture.com/MID/RickStasel09.jpg http://www.nyc-architecture.com/MID/Midtown091.jpg http://www.wirednewyork.com/real_est...lsmann_top.jpg http://www.wirednewyork.com/real_est...smann_side.jpg http://www.wirednewyork.com/real_est...tt_marquis.jpg http://www.wirednewyork.com/real_est...mann_night.jpg http://www.wirednewyork.com/times_sq...ney_spears.jpg |
Its different, the colors are strange but it goes well with times square, and its very unique.

Didn't David Childs design this one? I can't remember.
The only thing I ever remember about this building is the color scheme and the pointy top. It's pretty much a background building other than that (then again most of the TSX buildings are like that...more about advertising). |
I've recently visited the Virgin Megastore inside. It's not what it used to be. They sell T-shirts and touristy stuff.

Can you imagine times square with a skybridge straight through the middle.
|
I still feel that something better could've been here. The building is fine, and not bad. Also there was going to be a skybridge connecting this and the sister subsidiary Random House(s) building, but Random House didn't reach an agreement, and the Random House tower was built on 56th Street.

Strange tower...
