Even though I'm not really a fan of Gehry's high rise designs, I think that would have been much better than what was built.

As for unbuilt Gehry proposals - I guess I have mixed feelings about the Progressive Insurance Center planned for Cleveland in the late 80s.
The good: it would have brought 3,000 employees of Progressive into downtown; it would have incorporated some major public art pieces, including an Oldenburg newspaper as the crown; it would have bridged the railroad that runs along the lakefront; it would have been the second-tallest after Key Tower at 858 feet. The bad: the proportions are a little ungainly; it would have really unbalanced the skyline - for the most part, Cleveland's skyline has a "pyramid" silhouette and this would be a sore thumb. The Saarninen entry is impressive in its own right for being the inspiration to several built towers. I've never seen the Gioguardi or the Larson proposals - those are pretty horrific! :yuck:

wrabbit, you're thinking of the Ameritrust Center (1198 feet, located one block north of the Terminal Tower - lower left of the image), basically in the center of the CBD:

The Progressive Center was planned for the northeasternmost site of the 1903 Group Plan designed by Daniel Burnham, adjacent to Cleveland City Hall. The Burnham Group Plan was all about low-rise neo-classical buildings lining a grand greenspace - something like the Mall in Washington, DC. So to see an 858 foot Gehry tower placed at such an oddball site would have been cool, but odd, but cool, but... you get the idea. |
My pick would be the Miglin-Beitler Skyneedle. Thought it looked better than 7SD.
As for Progressive Tower, I think the extra sculptures on the building would have looked somewhat tacky. Ameritrust would have been awesome despite the lackluster top. |
