McMansion Neighborhoods In Your City
Post Streetview or Images about McMansion Neighborhoods in your area and perhaps discuss the McMansion in general. In Toronto we have the McMansion ridden suburb of Vaughan:

Dear God, that last one takes the cake.
I have never seen such horrible, gaudy examples in the U.S. Most McMansion neighborhoods are stupefyingly bland, not Liberace-esque. Who buys these homes? Chinese? Italians? Certainly not Toronto WASPs. |

Bell Acres near Pittsburgh
"Villa Noci" - this understated beauty is the largest house in Pennsylvania. The 5000 sqft McMansions in the neighborhood look like outhouses in comparison. Its owner Joe Nocito was indicted by the IRS for both business and personal tax evasion and claiming the mansion's costs (including imported marble from the old country, of course), a fleet of luxury vehicles, and his personal butler as business expenses. :haha: https://www.bing.com/maps/?v=2&cp=qr...43&form=LMLTCC http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-yxlx6t7QO4.../bellacres.jpg https://live.staticflickr.com/485/18...25b60b4e_b.jpg https://i.pinimg.com/736x/c9/1e/c4/c...ac5caec9ec.jpg |
This thread would not be complete without Southlake TX

Typical McMansion neighborhood in U.S. would be something like Novi, MI. Unrelentingly bland, not really over-the-top:
https://www.google.com/maps/@42.4698...7i16384!8i8192 The above neighborhood is probably at least half Chinese/Indian, BTW. Italian-American (and Russian and Greek) neighborhoods tend to have gaudy design, but I've never seen anything like those Vaughan examples. But certainly Staten Island, Dyker Heights, Brooklyn, Whitestone and Howard Beach, Queens, and parts of Central Jersey, will have some tacky individual homes. But not really a McMansion environment like Vaughn. Here's the Greek section of Bay Ridge, Brooklyn: https://www.google.com/maps/@40.6252...7i16384!8i8192 |
I like the Southlake examples, with a hideous, cheap-looking McMansion and then a third-world style drainage ditch in the front yard. Total class. Wanna-be Greenwich, CT meets rural Bolivia.

I grew up in a soulless McMansion in soulless Kingwood, TX a northern suburb of Houston. I always hated our house and the McMansions around it. My parents loved living in the furthest flung McMansion burbs of every city we lived in. The architecture of McMansions is just truly awful. A mishmash of every style thrown together with no thought or reasoning behind it. Not all of Kingwood is McMansions, but the newer eastern part down Kingwood Drive is all McMansions.
This is the house I mostly grew up in. https://www.google.com/maps/@30.0597...7i13312!8i6656 |

Other McMansions in the neighborhood look like outhouses? I think this house makes the White House look like a fricking shoe box! |
Edmonton's McMansions are like a car crash, awful and terrifying but you can't look away!
My Big Fat Greek McMansion Puke Green That short ones probably the worst, McSnouthome AAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGHHHH Columned Catastrophy |
^ Those are too small to count as McMansions I think; they're just typical ugly suburbia.
Here are my contributions from the Vancouver area, although I can't think of many. Even our rich people housing tends to be on relatively small and dense lots. Likewise for Winnipeg, where I can't think of any examples at all. South Surrey sprawl: https://www.google.ca/maps/@49.05766...7i13312!8i6656 Nestled along the US border: https://www.google.ca/maps/@49.00520...7i13312!8i6656 |
I always wonder what will happen with these awful houses in 30-70 years. I highly doubt there will ever be a preservationist movement for this junk. Most of these houses will fall apart as they were mostly built on the cheap and never hold their value. I'd love to see most awful 80s-now suburbia tract housing McMansion crap turn into slums in the future.

And, it's anecdotal, but it seems that professional class immigrants, especially Asians and Middle Easterners, love McMansion sprawl, while "traditional" upper class whites (WASPs, secular Jews, affluent Catholics) don't. The former group is growing faster than the latter, so there will still probably be a market for such homes. |
In general I prefer to tend American McMansions over Canadian ones. In Toronto and environs most new large houses tend to look like a cross between the Taj Mahal and Versailles. I'd take an oversized "Hamptons" style home any day.
