South Florida is very carcentric. We are much like Los Angeles in that respect. I see many similaraities having lived in Los Angeles myself, but this is slowly changing as downtown Miami becomes more urbanized. Brickell Village has become a very hot night spot now preferred by many locals over more touristy South Beach. In this first photo, Brickell Village is to the right.

Thanks, Bobdreamz! Since I've taken so many pictures, I decided to narrow things down a bit and do a thread of just aerials and shots from the tops of other skyscrapers to narrow things down a bit. I've had "Above New York" and "Above Los Angeles" on my coffee table for years, so now here's "Above Miami."

Very nice, these photos makes me think of a cross between Hong Kong, and Long Beach, CA.

You mentioned about wanting to live in one of those condos when you became rich. With the oversupply of highrise condos in the area, you can't get one of those bad boys for $150,000 - $200,000?

I'm not sure what the average price of a high-rise condo in Miami is right now, but what you quoted sounds about right. They are going for a lot less than what they were originally offered as. You mentioned the photos making you think of a cross between Hong Kong and Long Beach. Having lived in both L.A. and San Francisco, I think of Miami as a cross between San Francisco, Chicago, and L.A.

Thanks! I think more skyscrapers come will come eventually. We were lucky to get what we did in the span of time that we did get it. If you go to the Miami page of Emporis, what's on the drawing board is incredible. Our tallest approved project is not even listed there.

That is actually part of my reason for creating this thread.

As one of the contributing photographers to The New Miami the Magic City, this is one of the photos that made me a published photographer. It was used as a comparison photo to aerial shot from a similar angle 12 years ago to document the city's growth.

My First Shoot from the Roof of Bank of America

This is what happened on my first attempt. I ended up shooting in a thunderstorm.

yep - that's an awesome thread with amazing pics of a fabulous city... I'm astonished...:notacrook:

altho', as I keep saying, such massive development in such a short space of time coupled with the current global economic meltdown is going to lead to a property slump... I suspect many of those new towers will be empty for years to come... :(

Thanks, Chelsea Spy! And as I keep saying "such massive development in such a short space of time" is part of my reason for being here and creating as many photo threads I already have. I'm posting my best pictures of the city all over the internet.

Wow! It doesn't even look like an American city to me.

Incredible. If this economy/housing market ever rebounds it'll be astounding to see what those condos will go for.

Love the shots of that rainstorm rolling in. What was that like from the plane?

Speaking of which, what kind of flying machine was that!? ;)

Amazing. Towers for as far as the eye can see along the beach!

Kingofthehill Mar 31, 2009 2:34 AM

Some good photos in there..but there's so many photos that everything starts to look the same after a while.

IMO, if this economy/housing market ever rebounds, it will be astounding to see what else gets built here in Miami. This is nothing compared to what has been approved. At one point, Miami had over 75 buildings on Emporis.com either planned, approved, or already built that were over 500 feet tall. It will be interesting to see what all else makes it to construction because we are not done here quite yet.

It wsa a bit scary flying into that rainstorm with no windows, but also fun and exciting. Here is the plane I used on both aerial shoots. I'll do another one at some point, maybe when our office towers come to completion

New Atlantis has balls considering how chaotic the winds are during a torrential summer downpour in Miami is!

Miami is banging. Great shots--I'm sure a lot of work went into these.

Thanks, I am hydrogen! That is quite a compliment coming from you - a moderator and photographer yourself. I think my "Miami 2008 - Atlantis Rises Again" thread fell off the website because I hadn't updated it in a while, but there I had ground level shots as well. Here, I just wanted to narrow things down a bit.

Thanks for bringing these here! I'm still requesting a skyline shot from the west instead of the water. I'm sure it's harder to do.

Thank you! We have more planned if we can just keep interest alive through this economic crisis we are in. I'm doing the best I can to keep interest alive through my pictures, but could use some corporate help to launch my masterplan to increase tourism and revitalize the real estate market.

Yes, the problem there is getting a good vantage point. I tried getting up to the control tower of Miami International Airport, but of course, they said no way. I was able to do it several years ago when I did a temporary employment stint there, but no amount of name-dropping did it this time like being one of the photographic contributors to Arquitectonica as well as being published in The New Miami the Magic City. If I did another ultralight tour taking the route down to Dinner Key and back, I should be able to get some shots of the skyline from a southwest angle, but need to pay some bills before I book another ultralight flight.

So according to Emporis, there are nine 700 footers on tap for Miami. I believe that would put it ahead of both Houston and Los Angeles, with ten 700 footers. Amazing reality check there when I think of the days when the city only had one 700 footer and one 600 footer.

The city had only one 700 footer and one 600 footer until the 21st century. Just look at the difference in that photo I posted taken from my South Beach balcony back in 1998. We actually have two supertall projects already approved. In addition to the two Empire World Towers mentioned by Emporis at 1,022 feet each, there is also One Bayfront Plaza that Emporis left off this time which was approved at 1,049 feet.

Even though several U.S cities still have buildings taller than the tallest we currently have here in Miami (Four Seasons at 789 feet), the sheer number of tall buildings that have made it to construction thus far has many statisticians already ranking Miami's skyline 3rd behind New York and Chicago with more buildings 400 feet tall and up than any other U.S. city except New York and Chicago, but we could still use a couple of supertalls and a few more buildings over 700 feet tall and up to have a really impressive skyline. With the worst U.S. economy since The Great Depression impacting the entire world though, who knows if or when we'll see them.
