Dhaka Tour - Gulshan / Banani / Mohakhali / Baridhara (following posts)

These areas are located northeast of the city center and currently home to its greatest concentration of wealth. Many of nicest highrises, homes of many of the wealthy, the best shops and restaurants, and most of the foreign embassies are found in these areas.

Dhaka Tour - north along Airport Road (following posts)

Headed north along Airport Road one comes to Nikunja, an area which is being developed as the new financial center of Dhaka. Among under-construction buildings in this period is a distinctive new home for the Dhaka Stock Exchange. Continuing north, one reaches Zia International Airport. Originally built in the early 1980s as a architecturally pleasant but technologically basic facility, in the late 1990s it doubled in size and has been considerably modernised since. Heading further north, one gets to Uttara, one of Dhaka's planned suburbs, a fairly well-to-do area.

Dhaka's Airport (now called Hazrat Shahjalal, formerly Zia) was built in the 1980s, at a time when the country was much poorer than now. Considering the limited resources of the time, I think the architecture is reasonably attractive. The airport has received some upgrades and expansions since then, including the addition of a second terminal, but a major overhaul is needed to bring it on par with contemporary international standards. This is now in the works, with a much nicer third terminal likely in the next decade.

Dhaka Tour - The Outskirts (following posts)

Getting near the end of our tour and heading out of the city proper, there are several interesting areas in the fringes of the connurbation. Ashulia is a low lying area to the north of the city where people go for boat rides and where the better amusement parks of city are located. Gazipur further north is home to the IUT with its distinctive campus as well as one of the attractive feudal palaces that dot the countryside. Savar, to the west, is home to the National Memorial Monument, one of the symbols of Dhaka, commemorating the liberation struggle and genocide of 1971.
