I took this photo a while back and call it "Big John, Little John" because the guy standing there is named John.

Tribune included a bottom up view of 1000 S. Michigan showing its cantilever in the article Steely Dan posted in the highrise thread.

i don't know how i'm going to explain this to my wife.

my heart has just been stolen from me!

BUILD! IT! NOW!

Skyguy_7 Oct 2, 2015 5:59 PM

^LOL. I don't quite understand your infatuation. The height is great and I like the street presence, but this design just doesn't make much sense to me. The first, angled cantilever feels too clunky. In my opinion, it's just not worth losing your wife over.

chris08876 Oct 2, 2015 6:04 PM

This is absurd....

Absurdly good. Damn. An improved Nordstrom like Cantilever.

The chopped and flanging nature of it is evident. Pretty unique.

How do the air rights work here? If the owner next door wants to demolish and build taller does this proposal not interfere?

I don't think the building next door can be demolished. Landmark district, no?

munchymunch Oct 2, 2015 8:29 PM

The developers owns the building next door.

Tom Servo Oct 2, 2015 8:42 PM

fuck yeah :cheers::yes:

Busy Bee Oct 2, 2015 10:46 PM

Is Columbia's little building on the corner landmarked as well?

Mr Downtown Oct 2, 2015 10:56 PM

Yes, the district extends to 11th.

Domer2019 Oct 3, 2015 12:21 AM

So we've established that it looks cool close up. But even for people at Millenium or Grant Park (granted, tourists will want to venture south for this), the vast majority of eyes won't be as awed by its form. In the end, it's currently shaping up to be a handsomer Aon. I just wish there was more to it, perhaps a complement to the cantilever on the other side or just anything to bring out a more memorable form in terms of the skyline.

That said, I still prefer this to a 432 Park by a longshot.

Unique twist on your typical rectangle box.

OhioGuy Oct 6, 2015 12:54 AM

I like it! The twist is a nice change from other skyscrapers in Chicago. And the height should help the twisted design stand out even more.

Ogdenman36 Oct 6, 2015 7:11 PM

What are the odds that this gets built as of right now? I know there are a bunch of hoops to jump through, but as of now.

Beautiful building that would change the south Mich Ave vibe IMO and add more pep. I am a season ticket holder to the Bears(I know bad year), and I have my spot hero go to garage by the CNA center. I walk south on Mich to Roosevelt every bears game.
There is so little activity heading south on Mich Ave,past Mill Park.

How cool would it be in the future to have a bustling Mich Ave from Roosevelt all the way up to Oak Street! Wow.

Community Meeting w Ald. Burns, 4th

Oct. 29 6:00-8:00 PM

East-West University, 816 S. Michigan
4th-Floor - Auditorium

This is the big one, folks - come loaded for Grizzly. NIMBYs will be out in force for this one (and not just speaking of our own Mr. D). There will be vocal opposition from condo building next door, as well as elsewhere. I was at the big Park Michigan meeting at Jones College Prep during the boom, and the air was thick with palpable NIMBY ignorance and degeneration..........we should expect even more reprehensibly 'challenging' conditions to develop next Thursday evening......

Again - this is the big one. Nothing should be left on the table fighting for a Jahn on Michigan Avenue......

Good luck on this one guys. I don't even live in Cook county anymore and I would attend if I wasn't out of town next week. I think we all know the importance of this one, may the wind be at your backs!

BVictor1 Oct 26, 2015 11:15 PM

I'm hearing that there will be a meeting on Thursday 10/29 at 6PM at East-West University.

Perhaps someone can confirm that for certain. Someone from the city mentioned it to me.

I can't be at this one... I hope someone from the forum can go...

^ Uhhhhh - ok: It's confirmed. ;) (I realize you're multi-tasking this evening).

I'll be there. We need a big, big showing. Whatever else you've got going on Thur. evening, I'd just go ahead and cancel......can't possibly be as important as this.......

BVictor1 Oct 27, 2015 3:01 AM

^I've got school...

Believe me, anything else, I'd try to get out of it.

Yeah, I've got a lot going on. I didn't realize the info had been posted.
