Canmore, Alberta - a special place

45 days in and really beginning to understand just how special this place is. I had the opportunity to move here from Edmonton and jumped at the chance to live/work/play in the beautiful Rocky Mountains.

*Canmore is located about an hour west of Calgary, Alberta and 20mins east of Banff.

Population ~14000

----

A former mining town with a rich history.

A favourite bench of mine along the Bow River.

Home to the Canmore Nordic Centre and host of the Calgary 88' nordic events, this is the primary training facility for the national team and an amazing amenity for us non lycra folks.

Home to multiple breweries and a distillery, Canmore has a very active independent beer scene.
https://cdn.skyrisecities.com/forum/...04-jpg.302706/

Popular for day trips from Calgary and weekend trips for much of Alberta/BC, the influx of people is substantial from Friday around 3pm until Sunday at 3pm.

There is a significant resort component to Canmore including Silver Tip (golf) and Three Sisters (golf).

The main CP Rail line bisects the town.

Outdoor activities including campfires in some areas are welcomed.

In recent years a lot of investment has been made in and around the Downtown to modernize or bring in new options for both residents and visitors. This has caused some friction between retaining the quaint local feel versus a more 'Banff feel'.

Real estate here is insane... with an avg. house price around $800,000.00 and rents often over $2000.00/month for a 2bdrm.

Looks idyllic! I’ve been to Banff (& Calgary) twice, in 1984 & 2004 & really enjoyed both. I’ve only been there in summer. Looks just as beautiful in winter.

Thank you for posting these photos. My friend and I went on a road trip to Glacier National Park and the Canadian Rockies for three weeks after we graduated from high school many years ago. The scenery is absolutely stunning.

Beautiful part of the world. I've been watching Heartland for a while, a Canadian tv show on Netflix, which takes place in Alberta. Such a pretty place up there.

Snow in the mountain is so precious... I love skiing and snowboarding. It's been a pretty long while since the last time I did, though.
But it's a bit like cycling, only takes a couple of days before you get your skills back at doing this.

Definitely. Some of those chalets would rent to millionaires exclusively in the Alps.

The lead used to be one of my D men back in Edmonton. Shaun is a very humble and thoughtful guy and a decent dressing room guy, er player.

That show is filmed about an hour SE of here in the foothills at the edge of the mountains.

430-6pm hike up and back at Heart Creek.

So, you know him? The Jack character is probably my favorite on the show. He seems like the real deal, and I'd expect he's the same in real life.

Coldrsx Apr 15, 2021 7:35 PM

I knew him... but then he left Edmonton as he took on this role. I suspect he might remember me, but regardless, he was funny, sincere and supportive... the real deal just like the show.

KevinFromTexas Apr 15, 2021 11:19 PM

That's cool. I really love the show - Heartland, and it's funny because it isn't what I would typically watch, but I've binge watched all 13 seasons on Netflix and am waiting for them to add the 14th season, which they just wrapped up filming. I suppose it's already aired on tv in Canada. And from what I've heard, they're thinking of doing a 15th season. It's the longest running tv show in Canadian television history. I think what I like the most about it is how un-American it is. lol It's familiar enough, but doesn't have the typical American stuff thrown in that we get on tv here.

Is that a wolf? Imagine you are happily jogging along the road...thinking about what to eat for lunch or dinner...

Indeed.

It was stalking some deer when I interrupted it.
