The great Canadian city sim thread

When the baby is asleep following a tough goodnight session, it can be relaxing to roam the streets of cities built back in the golden age of near-unlimited free time.

Very cool!!!

Wish I could still find pics from my sim city 4 obsession - still the best IMO but only with a staggering number of mods. Sadly that hard drive died and the uploaded pics were on my former university web hosting. Do not have the time I used to in order to make some of the as-realistic-as-possible creations of the past even if I wanted to download it again.

Been thinking about starting a nerd hobby thread after taking up scale models during COVID after an almost 20 year hiatus.

You have a baby? Congrats!

(if you don't, then carry on)

SC4 was incredible and I dumped so, so many hours onto it. I think it still has a consistent modding community but I haven't played it heavily since 2012 or so. Maybe if I have a bit more time i'll boot it up again but it's been a loooong time. It really did well to balance gameplay with realism without being too...graphics-focused like newer releases? I've only played newer games like City Skylines sparingly.

OpenTTD is fun but that's more of a transport sim game than city-building.

I was huge into Sim City 2000 and Sim City 4, but Cities Skylines just doesn't have the strong management sim aspects that drew me to the Maxis titles. Too much sandbox, not enough sim. That said, I am often in awe of the gorgeous cityscapes that some users are able to craft in CS.

I played SimCity 2000 at my job in 1996, pretty much all day as I pretended to work. The boss didn't seem to care. I had some really amazing cities on that PC before I left.

I dumped more hours into SC4 that I can remember. Sadly, I think the PC I had the saves on is gone. Still have the SC4 manual and box for it.

Dabbled in Cities Skylines for a bit, got disinterested.

Looks like a blend of London, Istanbul and Hong Kong. Nice!

Congrats on the baby as well!

Thanks!

I'd say I was hoping for Cities:Skylines 2, but the days of the sort of autism seen in those screenshots are likely gone.

That was one dark, cold November in Copenhagen!

Any Workers and Resources: Soviet Republic fans?

It's my favourite city-builder in the last decade-plus.

I should see if I can dig up the old screenshots of a mid-sized American city I was building in Cities Skylines a few years ago. I've gone through a few computer changes since then and the wide number of mods and assets I had used & subscribed to has made the city unloadable.

Marty_Mcfly Oct 29, 2022 8:22 PM

Looks like my screenshots are indeed on the hard-drive that I use for file storage. It's been a few years since I have played this city but I was pretty happy with how it turned out. I built from the suburbs in to the centre city.

I also put a decent amount of effort into the university campus, and ensuring that the autumn season was completely isolated to these few blocks of the city lol

Haven't played CS in years. Not even sure if my old junky computer still works.

This is the last city I worked on, though. Pretty much the vanilla game for the time, with the cartoonish billboards on all the buildings.

Those are great. Very realistic airport. This game is a very relaxing, zen sort of thing.

Great thread idea! I sunk countless hours into SimCity 4 in high school. And great builds, Kool, Marty and TownGuy!

Lately I've been doing quite a bit with Cities: Skylines, although the first time I tried it several years ago, it didn't really hook me. It was only a couple years ago that my interest in the game was piqued again by a few helpful youtubers, and I gave it another shot.

I started out playing vanilla, and had fun with that, but eventually I began to bring in mods and custom assets that fundamentally changed the way I played - from mostly simulation-based to more of a creative canvas. These days I run 60-ish mods and several thousand custom assets.

Here's a recent project of mine, a "Tropical Canadian" city with some suburban areas and part of the downtown completed:

SimCity 4 is now 20 years old. Here's a great Montreal gem that just recently got added to the game.
