Exactly.

I am afraid you are mistaken my friend, this is in fact central park tower. You can see 220 CPS's crane in the background.:)

Central Park is not above ground yet, except small part (core).

I agree,

In the meantime, all of the nutjobs at SSC think that this tower has reached street level based upon an incorrect post here. That forum has really gone downhill.

What Could Have Been: Norman Foster & Rogers Stirk Harbour’s Submissions For Nordstrom Tower, 217 West 57th Street

With formwork about to rise above ground level at Nordstrom Tower, the Smith + Gill-designed supertall’s plans seem to be finalized, pending possible adjustments at the very top. But other renderings for Extell’s site were created by several firms during the RFP process, and we now have images of proposals by Foster + Partners and Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners. While they will remain unbuilt, both versions of the building offer fantastical takes on the future of Midtown in their own right.

Rogers's tower looks like a better candidate for the potential Hudson Spire and Foster's tower would also fit in better on the Hudson Yards or maybe Midtown East when the full rezoning kicks in.

That being said, I feel like the current design for Nordstrom is the best fit but the other designs shouldn't completely go to waste either...

Zapatan Aug 17, 2015 5:07 PM

The spire ruins that Roger's tower, otherwise it's okay.

I don't mind that Nordstrom (probably) lost its spire although I did like it. If the roof ends up around 1550' that's awesome, roof height is obviously more important.

JR Ewing Aug 17, 2015 7:13 PM

I wouldn't be surprised if the taller roof on Nirdstrom slopes like in the original proposal and therefore, an antenna wouldn't go with it.

Ploppalopp Aug 17, 2015 7:24 PM

That would be better than having a spire. Hopefully you're right, JR.

I agree. Rogers' proposal also slopes downward toward the park. Perhaps that's a feng shei element for Chinese buyers.

I hate that I'm at the edge of my seat yet again when it comes to this tower. I feel almost back to square 1 as to wondering what the final look will be.

Just a week ago, I just pulled out all my grey hairs and with news of a possible new look, I miraculously have more that I need to pull out.

All kidding aside... if no spire with height boost, I hope at least they go with a sloped roof like that orig design that JR has alluded to.

Seriously, they just need to make up their freaking mind.

I do agree that no spire with a height boost would be cool, but if it doesn't go above the 1520-1550 range (which I'm not sure it can anyway with the height limit) then It's a little disappointing considering that spire did look really cool.

JR Ewing Aug 17, 2015 9:28 PM

My guess is that we've basically seen the final design, and they're just tinkering with details, such as whether there will be a spire and what the parapet height will be.

Developer: Nordstrom Tower design still up in the air

Steve Cuozzo
August 18, 2015

Quote:

Three tower cranes hover like birds of prey over the site of Extell’s planned, 1,500-plus-foot-tall Nordstrom Tower at 217 W. 57th St., home to the department store and super-luxury condos.

(The crane at right is for Vornado’s 220 Central Park So.)

But despite reports of a hoped-for, record $4.4 billion apartment sellout, Gary Barnett’s Extell Development still doesn’t seem to know what it’s building.

A rep said all renderings previously shown, such as the one shown in the inset, were wrong, and no final image is available.

Completion, once expected in 2018, now “should be” in 2019.

What's with the spires, people?

I couldn't agree more, what an utterly pointless spire on an otherwise smart design with a slick façade

I hope, but the spire being removed would be a pretty major tweak. It does make perfect sense from an economic standpoint though, Barnett for some idiotic reason doesn't want to pass the WTC (even though he really already has), so spending the money on some novelty pole doesn't seem like it would be in his best interest.

I agree though that I really hope they do something interesting with the roof, ie. sloping up to ~1600' would truly be awesome.

sw5710 Aug 18, 2015 4:49 PM

Did the Developer really say that or is that just Cuozzo! That is truly the final diagram as you JR mentioned. We can all relax now. Fianally.

I concur. Something completely different from what we've seen won't be built.

Vertical_Gotham Aug 18, 2015 10:29 PM

It's amazing!! Per June 2015 filed in DOB, an engineering report shows the design Yimby had revealed.

All I can say, with the constant changes in design, Extell is making Smith Gill and all the engineers involved really earning their $$. Lol.

Or he's wasting his own.

JR Ewing Aug 19, 2015 1:18 AM

I don't think that this design has changed at all but for minor variations in nearly two years. Gary is just playing games.
