I believe this tower has something like a 23:1 ratio of height to width, which is nuts. World record essentially. 432 while thin, is pretty bulky compared to this. Along with its splendid design and art piece at the top, what will really be striking is its dimensions.

Yeah, its supposed to have that record ratio.

But I don't think it really means as much when you compare it to other towers proportionately. I keep thinking about the Burj Khalifah...

Of course, this is looking at the tower from the side, or at an angle...

But people who think 432 Park is thin or too tall will do another double take when they see this one...

And New York will have its own "eye of Sauron" (imagine the fun kids in Central Park can have).

As I posted in the Tower Verre thread, these are very exciting times. And I am most excited to see these "fraternal twins" being born at the same time.

More progress. Small North building has been demolished leaving only West building (the one to the left with lights and white brick on the top) left before foundation work can fully start.

Yeah, I didn't think it was really necessary, but we see that a lot with renderings, especially with this current batch. Why give the competition a free "advertisement"?... ;)

^ This could very well fit in with those classic Ferriss drawings...
In the 1920s, exhibitions played an important role in introducing modern design to the American public. One of the earliest showcases for visions of New York's future was the October 1925 exhibition at the John Wanamaker department store, entitled "The Titan City, a Pictorial Prophesy of New York, 1926-2026," which was part of a larger tri-centennial celebration of the founding of New York.[/img]

^ Just impressive how Verre and Steinway evoke this "New York feeling". The slenderness, the height, the setbacks, the ornamentation, the flow, the illumination ... I'm in love.

chris08876 Mar 6, 2015 11:33 PM

That third pic to the right (Verre) is jaw dropping. Verre is not that striking from the front, but from the sides, its stunning. Thats where it really shows off its beauty.

Seems like many of these supertalls look amazing from the sides or certain angles. One57 especially.

Yes, and we need more towers like this to bring the "romance" back to the midtown skyline. I think 30 Hudson and 1 Vanderbilt will fit in too, despite bulk.

That could be said of 111, viewed from the park. But it's the overall beauty of both towers that make them special. (and i dont think verre is that bad from any angle, just much better east to west).

Wow at first I was not crazy about this tower, now I love it, I can't wait to see this beauty rise into the skyline! Just have on question at what height will be the highest occupied floor?

Between 1,100 and 1,200ft. CTBUH says 1,134' but that's not counting mechanicals etc.

TALKING SHOP WITH FACADES EXPERT GREGG PASQUARELLI

Since its founding in 1996, SHoP Architects has been committed to fostering architectural innovation despite on-the-ground constraints. In New York, those constraints often take the form of municipal regulations. “From day one SHoP was always a firm that was interested in pushing the limits of design, really getting into materials and craftsmanship,” said principal Gregg Pasquarelli. “But we were also building in the pressure tank of New York, where a lot of the innovation has to occur in the skins of the buildings, because zoning is so prescriptive.” Pasquarelli will outline his firm’s approach to cutting-edge facade design in the context of New York’s regulatory environment in the afternoon keynote address at next month’s Facades+ NYC conference.

SHoP is known for, among other things, its creative use of a varied material palette. The paired towers of 626 First Avenue, currently under construction, are clad in copper; the recently-unveiled 111 West 57th Street high-rise features a terra cotta and bronze envelope. The diversity, said Pasquarelli, “is more about experimentation than anything else. The thing we don’t like is working with finished materials. We are interested in raw materials, how they patina and age over time.”

But while many of SHoP’s designs draw inspiration from the colors and textures of Manhattan’s historic built environment, the architects never lose sight of their ultimate goal: moving building design forward. “What are the limits of these materials now that we’re using CNC equipment to digitally fabricate facades?” asks Pasquarelli. “How can we rethink how traditional materials are used in a very twenty-first-century way?”
