The number on the building matches the street address, and it looks similar to what's there now. Time will tell.

I want some of that in Midtown, Madison Ave.

But yes, nice find- I want more of that in the UDistrict, too.

Also, seems the U of M has inquired about acquiring part of Audubon Park. Good God, I hope it's for park-like purposes.

I just saw that myself. It's interesting for sure. I have a couple of boring ideas of what the University of Memphis wants to do what that land and then one drawn out idea of what I think may be a possibility down the road 5 to 10 years, however I don't think the City would want to part ways with the land if it meant the long drawn out idea would actually happen (unless the city needs the money that bad). I I haven't heard anything solid from anyone that would actually know either...just educated speculating and rumor reporting.:haha:

Graceland, Civil Rights Museum in Memphis ranked among nation's most iconic attractions
The Commercial Appeal

Quote:

Graceland was named Best Iconic American Attraction in a recent USA Today and 10Best readers choice poll, garnering almost half of all votes in its category for a landslide victory... The National Civil Rights Museum took third place in the poll, joining San Francisco as the only cities with two attractions on the list.

the graceland and civil rights rankings in the publication is certainly a feather for memphis' tourist cap. i am convinced that the city and county need to continue to work to put interesting tourist packages together for both extended weekend excursion packages, romance packages, and family packages, which include the pink palace, the zoo, and several other regional venues. i was speaking to someone last saturday morning, and she was telling me about the expected draw of the union city museum and entertainment venue, which is discussed in the memphis skyscraper compilation. regardless, good positive attention for the area, and as many of us know, memphis has a great deal of good to offer, and apparently our resources and our offerings our being extended to a wider audience.

i think that it makes total rationally good sense to bring civil service, government services, etc., for memphis back to the downtown city proper. what a better time to draw a line in the sand to keep our government employees down town. we talk about sprawl and the accompanying issues, but it seems that so many cities do so little about it. when the city has the opportunity to encourage companies, agencies, business, etc., to remain down town, we need to have the necessary eateries, parking, security to make them want to be downtown or at least w/ no real reason to oppose it as a work station and work venue. these office workers cover the gamut of workers from legal secretaries to accountants, investigators for various state departments, and many more. i am strongly behind the downtown as the largest venue of a large metropolitan city work force. we talk about diversity, but if the downtown is basically a shrinking relatively unsupported location, we really are not diversified at all.

I agree, plus it's not a very good look to have an abandoned building towering over civic plaza, Memphis City Hall, and the Shelby County Building.

Damn, it's like everything we've been asking for has been delivered, at least in the form of ideas.

Out of town developer buys property in downtown. Check.
Possibly could develop a hotel. Check.

I'm looking forward to seeing what comes of this.

VSRJ Sep 13, 2013 7:59 PM

Exciting news, indeed! I just hope that if it is a hotel, it's a visually appealing one, not an interstate-side, cookie-cutter building plopped down in the middle of the city. I'm getting a bit ahead of myself, though. At least someone sees the value in that spot. Hopefully we'll learn more soon.

Not for sure if this was posted the other day or not.

Edit: Sorry about the size of the photo...at least it gives us a better view of what the Pyramid looks like right now.

I'll try to take some tomorrow.

Thanks for all the updates, guys! All this activity makes me very happy for Memphis. Hopefully the trend of new construction/activity/development continues.

I'm a little confused about Bass Prop's permit for the first phase of construction. Does this mean that they will only complete some of the project and then open it? Or are they breaking the construction into parts for other reasons? If anyone can clarify, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Had to go out east this morning. Is this International Paper moving dirt or is this another development at an adjacent property? These photos were taken in the parking lots directly behind the First Bank and the Backyard Burger; roughly 200 or so yards east of the current towers.

Yep, that's IP. Another parking ramp will be constructed behind the 10-story building.

Kroger ready to move forward with Union store design

http://www.bizjournals.com/memphis/n...ward-with.html

http://i40.tinypic.com/bej7nd.jpg

Quote:

Kroger’s Union store has come along a ways since neighbors saw first drawings months ago.

The latest changes include altering the building’s colors, breaking up some of its walls with materials and design elements and softening the parking lot with more landscaping.

Joe Bell, manager of marketing and public affairs with Kroger’s Delta Division, said the changes were well-recieved at a neighborhood meeting last night, even eliciting some applause.

“If Kroger had written a movie script for it, we couldn’t have done any better,” he said.

The Pickering Firm Inc., a company which has worked on many Kroger stores, led the design on this location.

Brad Schmiedicke, a Midtown resident, led the process for Pickering.

“We need the community to want this store and like this store,” Bell said.

“Like many retailers in this area, I don’t need them to be talking about me for the next 20 years. If they did, I wanted it to be in a favorable context.”

One challenge for the property design was that the 51,000-square-foot store needed a lot of parking.

Neighborhoods asked Kroger to soften the design, so the grocery store chain came back with more landscaping and green space in its parking area.

The parking area will also have some short brown walls, surrounded by shrubbery, and berms to separate it from the sidewalk.

Neighbors along the back part of the property were concerned about noise and lighting, so Kroger is adding fencing and more landscaping.

Kroger also altered its building exterior, which had a straight masonry wall.

They broke up the design with building materials and columns, changing the exterior to more earth tones and softer browns.

“When you couple that corner with the eating area and outdoor seating, it really changed the look of the store,” Bell said.
