:previous: I was confused by this as well Albany.

It turns out, there was a shorter building between the Hotel Chapman and 6th Street.
(HossC identified it as the building in the The Fugitive episode where Lois Nettleton visits the tailor)

If you look closely, you can see a corner of the shorter building (below).

Soon to be shut down, torn down, and rebuilt over the next year:
the California Incline in Santa Monica.

Any one else aware of this one? I'm sure someone is.

This is absolutely the Rose Ave base "Southern Counties Gas Company" holder. I think its somewhat of an optical illusion how close it is to the beach.

Look at this https://www.google.com/maps/d/edit?m...E.k2IAgfCHIb1Q and scroll down to Rose Ave. for more info.

There was another holder a little further north in Santa Monica but that was much smaller and its exact location is unknown. That was from the Edison Gas Company around the turn of the century before they sold out to Counties Gas.

Yep, that's the helipad Hoss. Good eye buddy. It appears to be a bit wider than the building.....hence the shadow.

It's also visible in this postcard.

I wonder how noisy it was if you had a room directly beneath the helipad. I imagine it'd vibrate you right off the bed.;)

Thanks for pinpointing the location of the gas-o-meter HossC.

1925. It appears it had a 'mini-me' meter as well...to it's left (north) :)

It is possible the smaller holder in this photo is the original one from the Santa Monica Edison Gas & Electric Company since Venice didn't become a city till 1905. I'm not sure if the same area at Rose Ave. & Main Street would have been considered Santa Monica prior to that.

ethereal_reality Apr 20, 2015 4:32 AM

:previous: You could be right Gastorical. I had forgotten about the 'mini-me' gas-holder.

After reading your comment (above), I was searching further north.

I found this intriguing image that shows several tanks in Santa Monica, but none appear to be a gas-holder.

Here's a closer view. (note the carriage waiting at the bottom of the stairs, and someone has hung their laundry out to dry)

I couldn't help but notice Shoup's Tavern. (the building is uncharacteristically long for a tavern. note the impressive flagpole, sans flag)

Thoughts?

Could it have been headed to Santa Anita racetrack?

This was the electric works side of the Edison Company. Little is known about this part of our history but it appears there was a "Gas Works" and a "Electric Works" and they seem to have been in different places in Santa Monica. This is probably the steam plant if I were to guess. You are correct that those holders are definitely not for what would have been manufactured gas at this time period. Gas holders were not constructed in a solid fashion till later in time.

HH, my best guess is that it is a returning Santa Anita race track special. Too bad it isn't carrying a dash sign. Another Possibility is an L.A County Fair special, or more remotely, a Railway Boosters excursion that connected with a regular in-service car for the last lap into LA, as I do not recall ever seeing more than two cars in an RB special.

cheers,
Jack

Descending the Incline always made me feel absolutely carefree and exhilarated.

Curbed LA published a bunch of historic pix of the California Incline on Friday, including this one from LAPL:

Dirt road leading to the top of the cliffs at Palisades Park in Santa Monica, ca.1905. The dirt road at center heads away from the viewer along the edge of the cliff at left and down to the Pacific Coast Highway at right. A wooden fence made from tree branches serves as a guard rail along the edge of the road. The road is bordered by a grove of palm trees at left. An automobile is making its way down the road at center. The ocean is in the distance at left with two small piers visible.

Perhaps they were just making an assumption, but the sources say it's a Rose Parade train--"About a block further north, at Glenarm Street, we see an inbound Rose Parade train passing the pseudo-Spanish style mini-mall at Glenarm Street in the '40s." uncanny.net seems to have gotten it from El Sereno Historical Society

I originally found this postcard of the Ivanhoe Motor Hotel at 11925 Wilshire Boulevard on eBay. Then, after a little searching, I found this larger version of the front.

www.bonanzamarket.de

http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...nhoeMotel2.jpg

The only photograph I've found is this postcard.

http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...nhoeMotel3.jpg
http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...nhoeMotel4.jpg
www.cardcow.com

The views at Historic Aerials aren't conclusive, but I think the rear building is missing by 1980. According to IMDb.com, the Ivanhoe makes an appearance in the 1949 movie 'The Crooked Way'. Their listing says, "Eddie Rice and Nina Martin stop in front of this location, Eddie then breaks into the gun store and steals a gun." I've only found a few short clips on YouTube (the ones that say "Full Movie" are just links to othe sites).

That's all fine and dandy, but each time I type noirish it automatically changes the word to nourish.

Every once in awhile a 'nourish' slips through, making me appear dumber than I actually am. ;)

Here's a terrifying early view of the California Incline:

I can't see where it connects to the beach (?)

Interesting LAT article about the fragile cliff face. Palisades Park, gifted to us by Arcadia Bandini Sterns Baker, is 30 feet narrower than it was 70 years ago.
