New Jensenburg

Hey,

This is a project I've been working on, sparesely, for some time.
I guess I'm going for a sort of New York-ish type of city with dense, tall volumes arranged in a rectangular street grid. However, I'm thnking that architecturally, perhaps I'll take some inspiration from central and northern European cities.
I don't really have that stuff all planned out though, I guess I'm basically just figuring it out building for building.

Great work, I love the textures and the background. And those buildings look very very real. Looking forward to seeing more! Btw could it be that some of the traffic lights are hanging a bit too low?

Bye Tom May 30, 2014 10:31 AM

^That might be, I'll have a look at the measurements.

Now, I'm doing this facade with a half random pattern by hand. So it's taking me ages, which is why I did some renders even though it's not fully clad.

Quite an interesting idea again, it will also be interesting to see how the tower ends at the top. The glass effect is beautiful, what programs are you using?

Bye Tom May 30, 2014 3:14 PM

Thanks! And I'm using Cinema 4D with it's built-in render engine.

Skydragon42 May 30, 2014 10:41 PM

Um, your picture(s) are invisible to me:(
I can see other pictures on this forum, and everyone else who has posted on your thread can see them, but not me:O
I'd like to see your city, and maybe you could check out my Remus city!

Bye Tom May 31, 2014 12:39 AM

I've been using Ubuntu One for the hosting, which I've noticed have had some server issues lately. So perhaps it's just temporary and now, whilst you're reading this, it's up and running again? If not, I really don't know what could be causing the issues.

There's a thread for this project over at skyscrapercity.com if you'd like to give that a try. The only sensible explanation I can come up with is that you're using an old browser and that it's giving you a hard time over the image URL;s, which lack a .jpg extension.

The start looks very promising. The models look realistic with very good textures. I also like the lighting in the renders; lovely!.

The modern buildings facade looks very interesting and it contrasts nicely with the older buildings.

^Thanks!

Seems like the host I was using; ubuntu One closed down, so I switched host and so I figure the problems with the pictures will be fixed now. Anyhow, this is that modern building I showed earlier, but finished:

Added another building and some advertisements and "life" to the thing. Not a huge thing, but I think it did a lot for the looks.

Hay! I can see the pictures now:D
Your buildings are very cool:)

Vellu Jun 14, 2014 6:48 PM

The modern building contrasts nicely with the older ones. I like the detail in the scene - all the adds and stuff - and the lighting. Indirect lighting works very well, but I'd also like to see some sunlit scenes.

gregSt Jun 15, 2014 4:38 PM

There is definitely life in it, especially in the last picture. And the modern top looks just great!

Bye Tom Jul 27, 2014 10:00 PM

Well, sorry about the late, awkward reply. I'm not such a huge regular on these forums; looking through about once a month I do keep up on all the projects however, but yeah, the replies... I've been out travelling too for the last month so I really should try to keep better track of my thread. After all, I did post this to a forum for the interaction.

Anyhow, I'm glad to hear you liked the modern top, which I otherwise had a feeling many might find strange.

About the sunlight, vellu, that won't actually appen until figure out new lighting for the scene. I'm using HDRI lighting, but haven't quite figured out the thing yet. Even with HDRI the color range isn't high enough to render shadows, and my attempts at figuring out how to let basic scene lighting do the shadows haven't quite worked out for me. So that's a matter of when I feel like digging up some sort of advice on the settings to use.

Either way, there's also two new buildings in town:

I like your textures very much. Did you make them yourself? The last picture displays a really interesting combination of different facades.

Bye Tom Aug 2, 2014 9:07 PM

^Nah, it's from cgtextures. I do generate and draw the normal/reflection maps though. Also, the modern facade is modeled with some simple materials I created.

Bye Tom Aug 25, 2014 2:12 PM

New Jensenburg is slowly growing :)

where do you get the ground floor textures? At CGTextures there are plenty of textures for modern skyscrapers, or whole buildings... but not much quality ground level...

Bye Tom Sep 8, 2014 12:27 AM

They're tough finds; try googling "shopfront" though, there are some decent ones out there of you can handle stretching and cropping them into usable textures. In the screens above however, only two of the ground floors rely on shopfront textures. Most of them rely more on the modeling.

Anyhow, some developments:
