Montreal's airport authority will demolish the Dorval golf course to make way for future expansions at YUL and the new rails for the Train de l'Ouest, according to Global News. Seems like this project is a go.

Wow, I didn't realize this was in the works, though truthfully, I won't miss that golf course...it was $48 to play there back in 2002 (not including cart) and the course was a piece of s%#! Probably cheaper to play there now. Though I do miss the days of watching hack golfers duff their shots on hole 14(?) from the back deck of the control centre.

WestJet is returning to Gander International. It'll offer seasonal flights to Halifax (starting in July) and Toronto (starting in May). It's also going to be expanding its services in St. John's and Deer Lake but no specifics on that yet.

I think I saw something recently about a rebuilding of the Gander terminal that will save the fabulous transit lounge?

SignalHillHiker Jan 19, 2015 6:30 PM

It looks like they're still planning to build entirely new but somehow reuse or repurpose the lounge. I don't know.

One of the flight increases for St. John's is now public: WestJet will now offer three daily flights from St. John's to Halifax instead of the current one.

Direct daily flights from Deer Lake and Gander to Halifax will be established.

The seasonal route to be created from Gander to Toronto will also be direct.

Halifax-Gander daily flight leaves at 8:50 pm and arrives 11:03 pm.
Reverse leaves 5:25 am and arrives 6:45 am.
Price is $157.69 one-way

Halifax-Deer Lake daily flight leaves at 7:40 am and arrives at 9:46 am.
Reverse leaves 10:20 am and arrives 11:38 am.
Price is $142.74

The new daily direct flight from Halifax to Glasgow costs $260.16 one way and begins in May.

St. John's-Dublin direct is also continuing.

MonctonRad Jan 19, 2015 7:10 PM

WestJet will also be starting a daily Moncton/Ottawa route this year as well. This is a little surprising since this route is already covered both by Air Canada and Porter.

This will be in addition to the daily year round WestJet Moncton/Toronto route and the seasonal WestJet Moncton/Hamilton and Moncton/Orlando routes.

I was hoping for a Moncton/St. John's route. Oh well........

Montreal Airport (YUL) December 2014 passenger stats are out.

total PAX for the year - 14,821,100, an increase of 5.2% over 2013.

http://www.admtl.com/sites/default/f...gl-14-vWeb.pdf

They should pass 15 million in 2015...also they have been know to revise their stats at a later date.

craneSpotter Jan 26, 2015 7:30 PM

YVR December 2014 numbers are out. December saw a 6.7% increase in PAX. Transborder and Europe lead the way with 12.5 and 14.3% increases respectively.

Total increase for 2014 was 7.7% to 19,358,203 passengers, which is an increase of 1,386,320 passengers over 2013.

Posted this in the Vancouver local, but thought it would be of interest here too:

Of note YVR is the fastest growing international airport in North America (on a percentage basis). All in all looks like a lot to celebrate.

I'd love to look at international only, but unfortunately US airports don't break it out that way, it's all just intl., so this will have to do, even though it skews Canadian airports higher.

A couple more notes, I'd expect YYZ to bump up quite a bit when the 2014 numbers are released, as all indications are they've had a big year. As well, all of the top 12 airports had positive growth in their international sectors, so a good year for long haul stats in general.

TorontoDrew Jan 28, 2015 12:07 AM

I was surprised that Toronto is ranked second actually. I suppose if you look at how international our populous is it makes sense though. 2015 should see another bump with the Pan Am games, not much but a little.

LeftCoaster Jan 28, 2015 12:20 AM

Well it's second mainly because of US flights (all Canadian airports are boosted artificial by what we call transborder).

I couldn't break US airports out that way though so it is what it is.

eemy Jan 28, 2015 3:18 AM

In 2013, YYZ's non-US Int'l traffic was 11.8 million which is enough for 5th place. It is almost certainly still in 5th place even when you discount Canadian traffic at the US airports above it in the rankings.

It's actually enough for 4th place behind JFK, MIA, and LAX only.

davidivivid Jan 28, 2015 6:32 PM

Quebec City's airport passenger stats for 2014 are out.

Total passenger traffic for the year is 1 574 699, an increase of 7.6% over 2013.

LO 044 Jan 28, 2015 7:33 PM

I think the most important stat for an airport is if it is growing in passenger and/or cargo numbers. Comparing one airport from one to another is just a stats game. If you put JFK, Newark and La Guardia numbers together, it is a different story all together. Yeah Newark is in New Jersey but i imagine the catchment area would be similar relative to Toronto's.

Newark serves the NYC metro area so yes they can all go together.

Toronto really needs a custom three-letter code. Something that has more oomph, like LAX or JFK.

As far as I know, Canada is limited by international treaty on what codes they can use. These codes fall under the same rules as radio station call letters.

SignalHillHiker Jan 28, 2015 10:40 PM

But surely they could pick something?

VOCM Radio in St. John's is "Voice of the Common Man", even though it was apparently a fluke they got those letters.

And I always forget if St. John's is YYZ or YYT. Even if it's me, surely TO needs three letters that couldn't be confused with St. John's?
