At the bottom of Piperstock Hill there's a sign for a strip mall.

Does anyone know what is being built next to the Buck or Two in the Stavanger Drive area? Site work has started on something.

I noticed the same thing over the weekend. I had no idea anything was planned for that site. It is, however, nice to see some infill there since that parking lot is a lot of wasted space. I also noticed the area in front of Mark's on Kelsey has been gated off. I think this will be the new site for Swiss Chalet - this has not yet been confirmed though.

I believe PF Changs is back in the proposed Harbour front restaurant development next to the Keg along with the other restaurant Legros and Motti

I just got confirmation that the new development in front of Mark's on Kelsey Drive is a TD Bank.

they are putting the Swiss Chalet, along with a Royal Bank in front of the Staples on Kelsey.

^^^^ Thanks for the update! TD is really upping its presence in the city. I believe they just recently opened a new branch in Manuels and another branch will be built on Stavanger, site of the former Penney Preowned dealership.

My friend just told me that they said on the radio that H&M are opening a location here... could this finally be true? lol

Copes Aug 20, 2012 1:32 PM

On a visit this weekend, my parents brought me a Banana Republic shirt from the outlet in Halifax. Apparently, when asked about a return, the clerk told them an outlet would be opening here within 90 days. Another clerk then butted in and said she thought the outlet was delayed, and wouldn't be here that soon.

None the less, it looks like Banana Republic might be on the way. I for one am very pleased about that.

^^^^ Hmm... it does sound promising! I'd love for a BR (and Tommy Hilfiger) outlet to come to St. John's. However, I'm a little reluctant to get my hopes up until something official is announced. Retail locations always seem subject to change quite often. But hey, BR employees would definitely know more about new locations than me...

As for the H&M, if this was announced on the radio I would give it some credit for sure. A couple of months back a writer for The Scope contacted H&M and inquired about a potential opening in St. John's. Their response indicated they did not have planned openings in 2012 but (of course) that could change. Here is a link to the discussion:

The plans for the new phase of the Stavanger Drive area, around Rona, shows the Gap as one of the stores going there, I thought from the beginning that it could be Banana Republic because I've never seen a Gap in a big box store development but have seen BR.

I noticed the same thing when looking at the site plans a few months back... Actually, I think I attached a link to the PDF in a previous post. If the rumor holds true this could very well be the spot... it seems plausible.

H&M is likely opening as they are opening in Fredericton this year and are looking at opening a second Halifax location as well!

H&M has been open in Moncton for well over a year and BR is opening a factory store in the Mapleton Centre in Moncton this fall, so I would not be surprised to see them coming to St. John's too.

H&M has been in the middle of rumors around St. John's for years. As of March of this year, H&M apparently had no plans to open a location in St. John's for this year. Anything could happen next year I suppose

A friend of mine was shopping at Banana Republic in Halifax a couple weeks back and was chatting with the store manager. She mentioned it would be great if BR opened a store in St. John's. The manager told her that BR has plans to open in St. John's and were waiting until their new store in Moncton was completed. Again, this is not a gaurantee BR will be coming to St. John's but I think it's definitely a strong sign. Likewise, location and time frame remain to be seen.

If shopping malls are dying, why can't I get a parking space?

An interesting article about retail shopping in St. John's

Source: CBC, Sept 2, 2012

Quote:

On Tuesday morning, I made a coffee run and — perhaps because of the caffeine — gained a little insight into the retail scene in St. John's.

I had headed out for Starbucks on Kenmount Road, to pick up a latte and a few coffees for coworkers. The drive back took a little longer than I would have liked; even though it was a Tuesday morning, circling around the Avalon Mall was a slow-motion conga line of cars.

While inching along, I noticed the long queues of vehicles hoping to take a turn into the lots off O'Leary and then Thorburn, and how all the spaces seemed to be filling up.

And it struck me: if shopping malls are dying, why are the parking lots at the Avalon Mall so often packed? I'm exaggerating in the headline about not being able to find a space, but I've more than once had to drive around to find one, even outside of the mayhem that is the Christmas shopping season.

In the last few months, I've read one news article after another that have used words like "dinosaur," "dying," "dwindling" and "moribund" to describe that all-too-familiar component of modern life, the shopping centre. Granted, most of the headlines are coming from the U.S., where the retail industry has been in more of a tailspin than in Canada.

Yet it is assumed in the business press that the very idea of the enclosed shopping centre has been in decline for years, and is ready to expire.

When the research company Green Street Advisors produced the sobering prediction that as many as 10 per cent of the 1,000 or so malls in the U.S. would disappear in the next decade (many of them to be bulldozed), the industry responded by saying the call was too conservative.....

I was driving by Boston Pizza on Aberdeen this evening and noticed all the lights were off and the parking lot was empty. For the life of me I can't see this location closing, it's a prime spot and always packed every time I drive past. Come to think of it, it could be closed due to Leslie-related damage. There is a hotel going up behind it, probably debris from the construction site damaged the building???? I'm by no means a huge Boston Pizza fan; the food is okay - just as good as any other family-style chain restaurant. Just wondering if anyone has any info on this....

I am pretty sure there was no power there (due to the storm) when you drove by, and that's why they were closed. Half of the east end had no power. Haven't heard of them closing, and I doubt they will..

Just read in the City of St. John's minutes that Swiss Chalet and RBC are going up on Kelsey Drive. I heard they will be built on the property currently a gravel lot in front of Staples. Also heard that TD Bank is going in front of Mark's on Kelsey also.

I believe some said they heard exactly that before but now that the city confirm it, its concrete! thanks!

I drove past the old Zellers location on Hamlyn Rd today and noticed the building now has a Walmart facade and colors, but no sign yet. Seems like they're making fairly quick turn around work.

I also noticed that too while driving. When is that supposed to open?

I was up around Stavanger lunchtime today and decided to take a drive on White Rose Dr. (Harvey Power Centre). There's a large lot of land directly behind the Dominion on Stavanger that's cleared off and surveyed; it looks as if it's being prepped for construction of units. The site is very active with construction workers. Since the last time I was up there a two unit building has been constructed which houses an orthodontist clinic and it looks as if something else will be going into the other unit very soon.

Arrakis Sep 27, 2012 6:40 PM

Dollarama, The Gap, Stokes, and a Golf store were scheduled to directly behind Dominion on White Rose Drive based on previous posts that I have seen on here.

The last time I checked that's what was scheduled to go there, but that's always subject to change.

Townie709 Sep 28, 2012 2:30 AM

Did you see anything of significance happening at the Field Power Center? (Like empire theatres)

Last I saw, it was a paved road through a field with no building construction started. I imagine it is the same now but, you never know!

There was activity going on at the Field Power centre as well. The land where Empire Theatres will be going has been prepped but no signs of any structure yet.

statbass Sep 29, 2012 3:51 PM

Perusing the city council minutes I noticed council approved a restaurant for 10 Hebron Way. I believe this is one of the streets in the Field Power Centre. Methinks this could possibly be Kelsey's or Milestones... again, only time will tell.

Don't quote me on this but I think a TD bank is going in that location. I know there are plans to put one up there but I'm not sure if it's this location or where the Penny pre-owned dealership used to be.

I'm fairly certain that the TD bank is going on the former penny pre-owned site. Not sure what's going up in the Wal-mart marking lot though

Not much progress yet, working on the sewer lines. Here's a picture from yesterday.
Interesting how they write the site name on the sewer pipes along with the date. I wonder what "tub" is ?

Nice to see the Swiss chalet started! I would always go to the kenmount road Swiss chalet, but driving to the cramped stevanger drive location is a pain.

Nice to see ground finally broken at the site, thanks for the update!

Hi all - found some info on the development behind Dominion on Aberdeen Ave. Confirmed new stores are Bulk Barn, Dollarama, Jones New York, Stokes, Banana Republic Factory Outlet, Ardene and Golf Town. Five more spaced to be leased in this development. Got this info from http://thompsoncentres.com/aberdeen-overview.html

I'm quite happy that we are getting a couple of new stores and not just repeats... I'm sure more are to come with the "feild Power Centre" and the huge one in Glencrest .. we cant have them all be repeats (I'm hoping for an Ikea PLEASE among others)

That will make it Dollarama number 5 for metro ;)

I wonder what the saturation point is for Dollaramas here? :haha:

You know, I shop at thrift stores - no issue there - but I still can't bring myself to walk into a Dollarama. The stuff is just so cheap - and I don't mean inexpensive.

It seems like the type of place where the cat food is ground up cat.

Well I was looking at the location finder on dollarama website and in the halifax region theres like 8 ... well I mean how many tim hortons are there??? I really wanna know that numer .. how many in the St. John's Metro Area .. because I have tried to count them all then i realize i missed a whole bunch or i walk into a building and didnt realize there was one there before

I tried looking for it in locator on the Tim Hortons website .. however they do it by leters and the letters run out so when you move down the map to include like CBS it re calulates and looses some of the other locations on the map lmao .. so we know that there are at least 28 ;)

Excellent news. I'm glad to hear that golftown is for sure since Golf and Gear is closing. I had a feeling they might have been closing for this reason. I'm also happy there will be an east end bulk barn and we will finally have a Banana Republic!
