East side is always going to have a more industrial vibe to it, due to the Port and the petrochemical plants. That said, the rowhouses are providing close-in alternatives for Downtown workers. One would hope that at some point banks and retail will follow the houses into the neighborhood. The area is a relative food desert and largely unbanked.

The immediate eastside and areas around UH will hopefully see good development.

Another crane joins the skyline - GHP site & Hotel. The start of the Cultural Center Building, the next block north toward Minute Maid Park, should not be that far off.

Nifty. I hope they get the hotel they were looking for.

Michi Feb 8, 2015 11:33 PM

Indeed! I think it is the garage that is permitted right now, and it will be neat to see how it spans the section of light rail tracks. I really hope there is a lot of economic opportunity to connect downtown to East Downtown in these few blocks...get a nice, seamless transition through the 59 elevated into the adjacent district.

I find highrises in the far flung suburbs a tad bit oxymoronic. And by a tad I mean a LOT. This is pure silliness.

You may not like the look of a skyscraper standing alone but if that is what the market demands, then it is not okymoronic or silly, it is a naturally efficient economy.

The market almost never demands a highrise built in the middle of no-whereland suburbia. It just doesn't make sense to build something so expensive when there is plenty of cheap land surrounding the development. I have to agree that it is pure silliness and more about the ego of a developer.

Double L Feb 11, 2015 12:27 AM

This highrise wasn't built in the middle of nowhere suburbia. It was built in The Woodlands. The second biggest city in the metro and one of the fastest growing parts of the city.

The Woodlands actually tried to avoid development for a long time but it was all so well planned that they had so much demand that they just had to give in and allow these buildings to be built. Also, trust me, there is no cheap land surrounding this development, the area is very expensive and filled with high class retail.

Do you think a financial institution will give a loan to a developer in order to satisfy their ego? If you know of any, please introduce them to me. Some of us have ideas that need to be developed.

Excellent and very valid point. Those other two posts on The Woodlands were really off-base.

Shasta Feb 11, 2015 5:10 AM

Pasadena is the second biggest city in the metro.

Pearland is actually probably more populous than The Woodlands now as well.

That said, The Woodlands is the capital of Montgomery County...

I wouldn't be surprised if the The Woodlands is the 2nd biggest economic center. The Houston metro has weird city limits and ETJs so the concept is a little bit silly, but it's generally been Sugarland, Baytown, or Pasadena for the past several decades.

Good news, this and if the Exxon building becomes leased to the city for HPD will be nice for downtown during this slump in oil prices.

Partnering with the Downtown Houston Management District, city officials expect to start construction on a redesigned parkway after July 4, the date of the Freedom Over Texas celebration in Eleanor Tinsley Park just north of the parkway. The goal, downtown district president Bob Eury said, is to finish the work in time for Free Press Summer Fest in late May 2016.

When completed, the $10 million in changes planned will improve pedestrian and bicyclist access from Midtown and Montrose to the Buffalo Bayou park system and add up to 175 parking spaces for visitors to the growing outdoor offerings along the bayou.

"The goal we have is how do we improve access to this park," said Andy Icken, chief development officer for the city.
