WOW. I'm dumb. I kept reading these comments about how they "bulked" up the skyline to make it look more dense but couldn't figure out what everybody was looking at. :(

Now I know!

I must not be firing on all cylinders today...looks the same to me

That's also about the least impressive angle save for from Coronado's perspective

No, your kind of right, the only difference in the skyline in that particular shot is the Hilton Bayfront is WAY bulkier than it really is, and there's an odd, thin tower on the Bayfront that is not there. It's to the right of the Symphony Towers.

But this shot isn't one of the ones from the movie that shows the significantly altered skyline.

I wish I could find these shots I'm talking about, because they're really cool.

So why did they turn off the fountain in the park and let it go to crap?

^ It fits in with the other new buildings in the area. Still, talk about keeping a boring area... boring.

Gets an F from me. This is a prime site - across from the park and along a main corridor...G street. THere is nothing special about this project. This is Carrier Johnson's Island Village. Sad Sad Sad.

They could have embraced the Park with more glazing so residents can look out over the park and drivers along G street could have some intrigue - perhaps they'll slow down a bit. The exterior walls at street level don't jog one bit, they can allow for some insets for a more pedestrian friendly feel. And they shouldn't do studio apartments on ground level. The two bedrooms and non-existing three bedrooms should be on the first level to inspire more families to move downtown. The courtyard is so bland. Looks like home depot windows repeated 100 times all spaced equally. The corner units in the courtyard have their balconies cut so the units further face the corners in stead of focusing out into the center of the courtyard. The ground level height is weak, it should be at least two levels tall - perhaps live work units like in Fahrenheit. The materials look so cheap as well.

Lots of changes are needed.

Yeah, it's about the same as many of the others in the area. It's not horrible...it's not great.

I'm an engineer and even I can design better than that.

Architects are useless.

I agree... I mean, you can't really blame the architects because they're hired by the developers and are told what to design...

Would it kill the developers to have a little imagination in their projects???

I would give this project a D. Bland is the perfect word...

I mean, such a prime site in between G and Market, and across the street from a future park.

Shame shame shame.

Glad it's covering up that surface parking lot it had.

I'm trying to see if I can find a rendering of the 99 cent store on Market St/26th street but can't find any. Guess I shouldn't hope for a modern design lol

SDfan Jul 13, 2011 11:57 PM

^^I don't think you can even count on that 99 cent store going up anytime soon, really...

As nice as it would be for my neighborhood.

HurricaneHugo Jul 14, 2011 9:47 PM

Well I passed by the site on tuesday and actually saw activity this time.

Just a bulldozer moving about but progress is progress!

1220-1250 J Street
San Diego, CA

1220-1250 J Street is a 12,000 sq ft parcel improved with two commercial buildings in the heart of downtown San Diego’s East Village/Ballbark neighborhood. The site is perfectly located within walking distance of hundreds of shops and restaurants, the Gaslamp Quarter, PETCO ballpark, the waterfront, beaches and San Diego Bay. This central location also offers quick access to freeways, the airport and commuter bus lines and light rail.

1220 J Street is a two story coffee processing warehouse with second floor office space totaling 6,900sf. 1250 J Street is a beautiful two story Victorian structure totaling 3,400sf with the Mission Café restaurant residing on the 1st floor and Pony International residing on the second floor.

Over the last few years, the downtown area has exploded with new development and the East Village/Ballpark area is no exception. Residential development has been the main focus and continues to thrive, but commercial development is on the rise. With the huge success of residential and the influx of new residents to the downtown area, the demand for new office and retail space is at an all time high. 1220-1250 J Street is in the perfect location to take advantage of this situation.

^^Anyone know when construction starts?

kpexpress Jul 19, 2011 12:04 AM

Anyone see that before?

Derek Jul 21, 2011 4:07 AM

I saw on Fifth Avenue next to where American Apparel is (where the Corvette Diner used to be) they're building something in the parking lot right next to it. I was driving so I couldn't see much. Does anybody have details on that??
