I know the primary focus is keeping the Chargers in SD but they really need to go back to this design...

And I wish they would leave at least the field from Qualcomm. I don't like to just bulldoze it over and leaving nothing behind.

Spoonman, awesome shot! I can only imagine when a twin building is next door.

We are living in exciting times. All of DTSD is booming!

I agree! After stagnating the last few years, downtown is ready to turn a corner once again.

I was in downtown and Barrio Logan this weekend and was blown away by recent progress, knowing that there was more to come. Lane Field tower 1 looked surprisingly cool when heading south on PCH. The Columbia area is becoming very dense. 15th & Island looks great and towers over far East Village, especially when driving north on 5. Barrio Logan was also alive with action and is slowly becoming integrated with the rest of downtown.

Ballpark Village, 15th & Island 2, Lucia Mel Cielo, Blue Sky, and other projects will bolster East Village even more. Same can be said for the Embarcadero area with the completion of Lane Field tower 2 and the new Bosa towers.

Just did some research on Camino Del Sur and 56 project Andy brought up, looks like it is now called Merge 56. A lot of potential for this strip of land just east of Intuit Campus. Another large mixed use dense proposal a la One Paseo but a bit smaller is proposed with 5 and 6 floor office buildings. Also Kilroy owns land just west of there and is proposing a 10 floor office tower. Of course NIMBYS are flying off the chain and saying "What benefit does this bring to our community"? Hey if developers didn't build stuff you wouldn't have your office to work in our your home to live in, years go by and cities grow and guess what new office space and homes need to be built for gods sake these people have no brain and just want to stop time :surrender:

Lane Field: Pretty much given up on being impressed with it and just glad BOSA will be building something tall right behind it soon so it won't really bother me that LF is so short. Was on Harbor Island this weekend and it looks like the crane for tower in front of Electra is offset way to the south, I hope the tower is on the south end because it will somewhat fill the skyline gap when shot from Harbor Island vantage point. Regarding the Gap has anyone been to the Bali Hai on Shelter Island and noticed 15th and Island pokes out and fills in the gap? Its pretty sweet.

I know it just went from a Holiday Inn to a Wyndham and got some improvements but I wonder how much longer that hotel has before it's rebuilt.

Considering all of the improvements on the North Embarcadero, the size of the parcel the addition of two 'lower' but brand new hotels plus that stunning view...wouldn't it make sense to eventually build another 'Mega' hotel on that site?

Personally, I have always wanted to see a Casino Resort on the site. I know it will never happen but man that would be amazing.

Just imagine the entire site with:

Underground parking
Retail Ground Floor
Casino 2nd level
Pools covering the entire top with a 'C' shaped hotel above and 1000 rooms and a world class 'club' like the ones found in Las Vegas.

With it's proximity to the Santa Fe Depot, it's not hard to imagine people heading down from LA/Orange County on the Surfliner rather than making the drive out to Vegas.

To get around the 'no casino' laws outside of Indian land, states like NY have sold land to nations and then considered this tribal land. It's how the city of Buffalo and Niagara Falls of Casinos in their downtown.

The revenue share deals are horrible but San Diego/California could learn from that.

But just think of the added draw to convention business if people visiting San Diego could spend some time at a casino. It would be huge.

Oh to dream....

Agree with you, thank goodness for the Bosa towers which will look nice because Lane Field is a total bust in my opinion. It's not the height, either. They could have come up with a better design at the same height - look at that rendering Beatrice posted, doesn't it look like any bland building you would find in a suburban office park? You know a design is boring when they have to add colors to the ground level floor which probably won't even exist outside of the rendering.

Micro Update: The crane is being built at the Blue Sky site.

Yeah, downtown is really on fire! You can ad the Alexan at 13th,14th, J and K and Atmosphere at 4th,5th, and Beach to the list as well. They are both fenced and have demolition work going.

They should save one of the spiral walkways and turn it into a waterslide. :)

Definitely save the Tron (can't call it a Jumbotron because it ain't jumbo).

New Air Carrier at Carlsbad-Palomar Airport

BizAir is a new carrier beginning and based out of Carlsbad-Palomar Airport in North San Diego County. Flights are now available 2x daily to LAX and service to Las Vegas and Phoenix will start in July. Additional locations may include Sacramento and San Francisco.

http://www.bizairshuttle.com

According to an article I read, additional carriers are looking at adding new service to Carlsbad-Palomar Airport because of demand.

mello May 29, 2015 6:39 AM

I told you guys Palomar Is going to become our Fort Lauderdale lol. It only makes sense to start offering more flights from there, let's wait for the big NIMBY backlash from Bressi Ranch just to the south east of the runway.

Any news on Navy Broadway Complex? Non downtown related tons of empty and defunct commercial space on the beginning of El Cajon Blvd between Park and Texas St. What is the holdup on a major revamp of this stretch that seems like a no brained and a great location for infill.

Does anybody know what happened to California Pacific Airlines? They were supposed to open a "hub" at McClellan Airport a few years ago and then it just kind of fizzled out.

They couldn't get FAA approval as an airline. They could make another go of it, but it would cost them a lot of money and the founder was 90 some years old.

United /SkyWest just stopped serving Carlsbad because they upgraded to new planes, which cannot takeoff from that runway with a full load.

It will be interesting to see what other carriers join BizAir (and Surf Air to a much lesser degree) in replacing United. My guess would be American as American Eagle served the airport for many years prior to the recession, plus I believe they many have planes that are compatible. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.
