Absolute kudos to SHoP for insisting on this "imperfect" slightly misaligned look as it adds so much textural interest. I wasn't sure about it when I first saw the cladding mock-up but I love it seeing it rise.

The "on purpose imperfections" are a bit too imperfect for me ... I keep wanting to fix it.

Two questions, one rhetorical and one technical...in that order:

1. Where did they get the inspiration for the terra-cotta design?

2. Are the contours of the bronze component supposed to change as the tower rises further?

Older video, but again everything you need to know about the building and the design...(13 min in for materials)

Two minutes in here for more on the facade...

You are seeing this building correctly, this is indeed terra cotta that is not directly a part of a masonry construction, but is instead clipped onto each facade panel in a pre-fabricated piece. Yes probably done for expansion/contraction, water handling, lighter weight, less labor, & ease of maintenance.

Grenfell tower in London? Completely different. That building affixed flammable insulation to the exterior of a concrete facade, and that insulation is what caught fire all the way up. This building acts more like a traditional curtain wall skyscraper instead of a masonry building, where the facade is built from non-combustible & fire-rated components and hangs on the structure.

Thank you. I was confused as to what I was looking at along with the usage of the term 'cladding', hence the bunny trail to Grenfell. Unless I am watching re-runs of Gilligan's Island, I guess I expect a building to have a solid surface for the facade. I suspect that the honey bees in Central Park would enjoy the protected space behind.

Now you have me confused. Are you saying you've never heard of a curtain wall construction? Applied masonry on skyscrapers has the exception to the rule for decades since curtain walls are so much quicker to construct, easier for maintenance, and thus cheaper all the way around.

For those looking for this, the first setback occurs exactly 9 floors above the second mechanical floor which has just been completed so we are probably 6 floors away from the first setback.

Going back to the pics from Nov 2, it looks like they are still on track completing roughly 5 floors a month.

I like snow pics. I can imagine the illuminated crown as a beacon in the snow.

Zerton Dec 14, 2017 3:59 PM

Heavenly.

I wonder how much the window cleaners are going to hate those branches across the glass.

Also - I hope at night the side facade looks "real" (as in not just glass covering a blank wall).

NYguy Dec 14, 2017 9:04 PM

^ From what we've seen so far, I think it will be fine.
