COLUMBUS, Ohio - Scarlet, grey and lots of orange brick

Hello again, SSP!

ColDayMan gave me a guided tour of Columbus. It wasn't my first time in the city, but last summer I was exploring the place on my own on limited time.

I saw a lot more than this set covers, not so much because it was 17 degrees but because light was limited. This city has quite a bit to see, and living nearby I should capture much more in the months to come.

Thanks to ColDayMan for helping make this happen!

Nice! Always good to see my former home. I still love Columbus even though I no longer live there. Go Bucks!

This scene looks so peaceful and inviting! Love those elephants.

That's in Goodale Park, in the Victorian Village. North of downtown, west of the Short North and south of the OSU campus.

The Short North, which is covered in both Columbus threads I've posted, doesn't have as much in the way of interesting architecture, but the storefronts are well-done. Saw it on a Saturday night for the first time and it's quite vibrant, even with the temperature in the teens and likely a lot of people out of town for the Buckeyes' championship game in Dallas. I didn't shoot as much in the German Village as the shadows were getting quite long. The good news is it's quite old and will be there when I return.

Also not making the thread were the buckeyes (i.e. chocolate-dipped peanut butter balls) that I picked up in the German Village. They didn't last long enough for a photo.

That's brisk baby!

I´ve enjoyed this very pleasant tour along Columbus. It looks a very comfortable city. The snow covering its streets and parks makes Columbus even prettier.

Thanks for sharing and greetings from Madrid, Spain.

My old hometown looks so similar to how I left her... aside from the beautiful new Ohio Union. Long's Bookstore closed a loooonng time ago... surprised nothing has taken that space over yet. Seeing Apollo's makes me crave some gyros!

In my opinion, Columbus' architectural strength is found more in its residential architecture than its commercial architecture. Victorian Village and German Village are chock full of absolutely gorgeous homes. Some nice institutional architecture on campus as well (University Hall, Orton Hall, The Library... etc...).

Thanks for sharing!

Hey can anyone tell me what's the deal w/ Columbus? When you ask people for the largest city in OH, most say Cleveland but it's Columbus. Sports teams? Cleveland has three of the four major sports and Cincy even has two while Columbus only has one - and even then it's a hockey team (smallest of four major sports) and that team is fairly new.

Even looking at the metro areas, they're all roughly the same per Wikipedia. Cleveland and Cincy are a bit over 2 million while Columbus is almost at 2 million.

My best guess is historical: Cleveland was historically Ohio's largest city (true?) and it's downward trajectory combined with Columbus' upward trajectory have left people confused. Any other thoughts from Ohioans? Sorry to hijack this thread, great pics by the way.

EDIT: upon further review, it appears that Columbus overtook Cleveland fairly recently (sometime in the mid 80's). If you actually look at the historical population sidebars on each city's Wiki page side by side, it's pretty fascinating!). Combined with the number of sports teams in each city, I can see why the casual observer would think that Cleveland is the largest city. Other feedback is welcome though.

Well...I'll make it simple. Cincinnati was historically the state's largest city until 1900. Cleveland then took over due to an industrial boom. Then around 1990/2000ish, all three 3C's became about equal. Cincinnati is the state's largest MSA; Cleveland the largest CSA; Columbus is the largest city. Confusing, sure, but generally, all three are of equal importance in Ohio and have MSA populations around 2+ million.

I love that town. Bet there's a lot of happy people today in Cbus

SouthByMidwest Jan 14, 2015 2:14 AM

And then tonight, the Buckeyes kicked the shit out of Michigan in basketball too.

nice shots. as an aficionado of masonry and brick, i'm always intrigued by regional differences, as brick cities are made of the land on which they lay, instead of imported lumber. columbus has some excellent brick neighborhoods.

Nice pictures. ColDayMan gave me a tour of the same areas when I was there 7 years ago. I need to get back and see the German Village again.

Love bright crisp snow days. Very nice, and like your processing treatment.

SouthByMidwest Jan 16, 2015 4:38 AM

Thanks. Really I had to experiment a bit with the post-processing because I don't have a lot of snow photos. It's new challenge, with me coming from southeast Texas and most of my travel north has been in the summer or fall. First winter in Ohio. White being the primary color on the ground rather than green affects the contrast-detect AF for sure. I had a lower ratio of keepers than usual.

We warm up a bit next week and the snow will be gone. But I'm sure there will be more soon.
