I was talking about abolishing parking lots, not the catholic church.
What is Basecamp? An affordable housing concept or something? If it's just a residential development that name is terrible. Trying to build a brand around it, too? Basecamp Cicero, Basecamp South Loop, Basecamp Normal? Ugh I hope it's the name of a charity or something. |

This area really isn't River North. It's just north and outside the boundaries of... When I saw the above picture, it struck a chord with me. Dantrell Davis Way... I remember when that tragedy happened. I can't believe it's been so long, but I remember it like it was yesterday. It was such a horrific tragedy:( He was just walking to school. 23 years have passed. |

There's another newer one to the south too where they put that Argo Tea. Say what you will about it, but as someone who lives near there, it's been great. People actually sit out there, plus there's free live music out there pretty much everyday when it's nice out and since it's a public park, you don't have to buy shit from Argo if you don't want to just to enjoy it. Getting back to the name, I think the stereotype has changed a little bit. There will still be older rich dudes there, but the GC has attracted a much younger crowd. Not to mention Velvet Taco, which belongs in Wicker Park, is now there. Nico Osteria and its lounge are nice and doesn't 100% scream Dbag money (though maybe a little bit). The Thompson is a nice boutique hotel that attracts young people too. Urban Outfitters is going in there soon too. There's still an element of the old rich dude and young girl thing. However, I think that's part of what makes the specific area hilarious and great for people watching. |

I really wish the area would get designated Cabrini or Little Hell. So much more character and history than Near North Side, or whatever the CHA redevelopment is trying to call it nowadays... Parkside at Old Town? |
Yeah, it's weird that "Basecamp River North" is almost totally surrounded by "ParkSide of Old Town". It's really a vast gray area, though, so the realtors and developers will decide what to call it.
Continuing to call it Cabrini would be nice from a historical perspective but probably not realistic. Little Hell is awesome but it recalls an era that almost nobody can remember, the history was literally wiped off the map. Even in New York the developers have tried to re-brand Hell's Kitchen. |

Back to parking lots, does anybody know about this lot between the Sheraton, NBC Tower, and the river? There's an awful swath of lots in that area, most of which I believe is in talks to become part of an expanded Tribune Tower/Center, but I don't know if this specific one is part of that.
It's prime riverfront. You could put a tower there. |

We will see if they can rent to a restaurant... doesn't seem like they are providing any parking, but if they expect people to come on foot, they will need to cross one of the most pedestrian-hostile intersections in the downtown area. I've always thought the city should break that huge stretch of Division with some landscaped medians. |

Took this photo on the way to work this AM - didn't know what the river condition here was going to be - certainly seems different than what they've done elsewhere - like an amphitheater/stair/planter kind of detail - which I think would/will be really nice - and give the wacker drive sidewalk a more connected feel to the river.

^Yep, that section will be the "River Theater".
http://i.imgur.com/3zvrXoX.jpg (Ignore the fact that the buildings in the bg of the render are wrong, off by a block) The planners said that this will probably be how most people get up and down from the street level. |
