Yes and a coiled up snake.

The thorns could be covered in solar panels, making them not just decorative. You could probably design some shading around it as well.

I think the effect would be lost on some people. I can't help but think it'd just turn out like a big green glass dildo from hell, unless you somehow defy engineering and make realistic arms.

I've always thought Phoenix could use a big pyramid in its skyline. or maybe two--a 440' and 415' spike instead of the hideous mercado, reopening 6th St. If they were full city blocks with ground floor retail at their base they could seriously create some mass on the skyline while looking completely imposing and awesome.

that sounds tacky, as does the saguaro tower

What's wrong with just building the giant glass dildo from hell as an iconic building? That would certainly get some attention.

This building certainly gets plenty of love.

Leo the Dog Oct 25, 2009 3:49 PM

^^^ While we're on the topic of tacky buildings, OCPE naturally comes to mind.

Has anyone walked along Central Ave next to OCPE recently? I guess they went with the less is more approach to landscaping. Consists of a whole lotta gravel with terrible choice of trees. The sad thing is, their surface parking lot looks lush compared to their Central Ave side.

Vicelord John Oct 25, 2009 4:10 PM

Can I have a show of hands, how many folks are non-drinkers? I don't mean ocassional cocktail, but somoene who doesn't touch alcohol.

I wonder because the other night I ordered an ice tea at the bar with a friend because I just didn't feel like drinking booze. The bartender looked at me like I was a complete schmuck and said I could make ice tea at home much cheaper, and then refused to give me refills without charging me an additional two dollars.

It would have cost me less to have a beer as it turned out and I just wonder if people who are hardcore non-drinkers ever go to bars and if they feel like total outcasts because they don't drink.

HooverDam Oct 25, 2009 5:53 PM

^Im a teetotaler myself and have never had that issue. I usually get a soda or whatever and they're happy to refill it for free. Sounds like that particular bartender was just a jerkoff. You shouldve told him you can buy booze at Safeway and drink them at home for far cheaper than the inflated prices at a bar, so his point was idiotic. You're paying a premium at a bar for the environment, not because alcohol is some hard to come by commodity.

Yeah but it turned out just looking like a big space ship. I still think it looks cool tho. If designed right a tower like that would certainly be iconic. especially if its a new tallest. I also like Sean's idea of a pyramid. We need at least one tower that is creative and different in this city! As of right now the only icon we have is Camelback Mountain..

CraftTeutonic, what is so tacky about that? Should we keep building boring boxes?

PHX31 Oct 26, 2009 5:45 PM

I think we need a tower that looks like a shard of quartz... like one of the pieces below:

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...al_93c3951.jpg

One that is more non-uniform would be the best. There is already a tower similar in San Diego (their tallest I think)... but my idea would be less symmetrical and fully cladded in glass.

I think the idea is tacky because its essential uncreative. The Cardinals stadium works for me because it sort of resembles a cactus or a coiled snake but its not literally an image of one. If you just literally built a giant saguaro, that would look cheesy in my estimation.

Now lets say you had a building that had a roundish shape with accordion like fins like a saguaro, like this (imagine this as a top down view):
http://img17.imageshack.us/img17/605/shaper.jpg

with maybe greenish tinted glass would be fine. It would be enough to hint at the shape of a cactus without being so literal.

I like the quartz crystal idea, it could even be clad in copper.

Leo the Dog Oct 27, 2009 4:01 PM

Why don't we just build normal downtown city buildings, you know the kind that front the sidewalk with no setbacks, no behemoth parking structures located behind them (mid-town), interact with pedestrian activities, have connections to public transit...you know, like the rest of urban America.

Vicelord John Oct 27, 2009 4:06 PM

I can answer that question, but nobody wants to hear it.

I'd like to hear your take.

Vicelord John Oct 28, 2009 3:34 PM

Well, because Phoenix was built almost 100% after WW2, completely around the automobile. It's been a spread out, rural city, for decades, and people are used to that. A lot of people who live here came here for that, because they lived in the dense east coast.

With the exception of NYC, every major development built in urban cities, has to have a ton of parking, most have setbacks, and are non-interactive with the city around it. Phoenix will not be the one exception, sorry. The only hope Phoenix ever had was to have a lot of older/historic buildings, but we all know we don't have those so we are up shit fuck creek with a drinking straw for a paddle. I mean, look at Monroe street between 7th and Central, it feels like a damn suburban mall street.

Leo the Dog Oct 28, 2009 4:29 PM

Ok, I understand the whole automobile thing, but why are you making excuses for a city of 1.5 mil? Phoenix has been a large pop. center for decades now, It gets quite old hearing how Phx is a "new" city, and the lack of pre-war structures means that it will remain the way it is forever.

SD, LA, Austin, Miami, Dallas, Denver just to name a few, are non-east coast cities that have re-built their once decimated inner-city 'hoods and CBDs. Their downtowns used to be surrounded by surface parking, just as Phx's does right now.

and um, all of the cities you named have huge stocks of buildings from pre war era, when people WALKED. Phoenix will never be what you want it to be. Even Denver, look at the newer buildings. They all have huge setbacks and plazas... I was depressed walking from the baseball stadium to the hotel monaco through all the suburban office towers. The dense areas are all rehabbed old buildings.

Sorry, but phoenix doesn't have the option to rehab the old building stock.

Leo the Dog Oct 29, 2009 4:06 PM

I have to disagree with your hopelessness about Phx. Denver has made significant progress in their CBD since as early as the 90's. There are some great photos of before and after Denver pics on this site, you should check them out one day. Phoenix could easily do the same. There really is no excuse for the current situation of the inner-city.

Oh and Miami isn't considered East Coast, its not considered The South...its simply S. Florida. Nobody says I'm flying to the East Coast referring to Miami.

Vicelord John Oct 29, 2009 4:54 PM

I do

Here's an interesting article by Richard Florida about recession geography. He talks a bit about the Valley and how it was more or less hit worse than any other area by the recession, what cities will perhaps be like after the recession, etc. I thought folks here might find it interesting.

NorthScottsdale Oct 30, 2009 12:24 AM

Is anyone gonna do the Zombie Walk downtown tomorrow night? It sounds like it would be pretty fun. Anyone can go... They are meeting at 530 at Heritage Square and walking the streets though AZ center, ASU downtown, by the Suns game at US air center, and then partying at Fridays Front Row at Chase.. My buddy is going dressed up as an eradication officer. Sounds like it will be a lot of fun!! And it's great to see random, crazy stuff like this going on downtown!

Also, take this as a heads up! If you see a pack of zombies coming at you, the world isn't ending!!! its fake!! lol..

Vicelord John Oct 30, 2009 12:40 AM

I may mosey across the street and laugh at them all.

I find both of them to be funny. Its not a rip-off. If anything, shaun of the dead is a rip-off of dawn of the dead with comedy thrown in.

It's called parody, hence the name Shawn of the Dead. Rhymes with Dawn of the Dead. Zombieland is just a lazy American piece of crap. Yeah, I saw it.

PHX31 Oct 31, 2009 6:02 PM

/\ Vicelord, it's Shaun, not Shawn... that's another cool thing about it. It'd be very easy to make a parody called Shawn of the Dead (Shawn = Dawn)... but they chose Shaun instead.

obviously i know its a parody. i'm saying neither of them is a rip-off. shaun of the dead wasn't even the first zombie comedy btw(the first modern one was actually Return of the Living Dead, an American film). additionally, it can be argued that zombieland takes more of its humor from a michael cera movie than sotd

Meh I always thought they stepped on the joke w/ the title of the movie. Dont get me wrong, I like the flick, but the title/marketing shouldnt have given it away. The first 15-20 minutes are just a romantic comedy then it turns and becomes a zombie movie, they shouldve let that be a surprise. Sort of like how the turn in FROM DUSK TILL DAWN which comes out of nowhere (though truth be told I never saw the trailer, maybe they spoiled it there too).

PHX31 Nov 1, 2009 6:19 AM

I'm not really sure what you are saying. I thought it was obviously a zombie movie and they had to incorporate some other stuff to create the entire plot of the movie. And "Shawn" would have been too obvious.

Im saying why advertise it as a zombie movie? If you watch the first 15-20 minutes outside of the title there's no hint that its a zombie movie. It just seems like a romantic comedy kinda thing. I like the idea of guys getting dragged to the theaters w/ their girlfriends to see a romantic comedy, then blamo, the ole switchero would take place.

Then after like a week in theaters, word would spread and you could just advertise it truthfully. Now I know this is way too risky of a move for Hollywood whos obsessed with playing it safe and thus would never happen. Even the trailer for "From Dusk Till Dawn" ruins the vampire surprise, but if you went into that movie not knowing what its about, you wouldnt see the vampire thing coming as it doesnt happen until midway through the film.

I guess what Im saying is, trailers/advertising often tell me too much about a movie and ruin some of the surprise. Its why reading a script can be fun, you just see a title and have nothing to go on and everythings a surprise.

PHX31 Nov 1, 2009 4:47 PM

I see what you are saying. That would be pretty cool.

Vicelord John Nov 1, 2009 5:10 PM

Wait. So with a name like shaun of the dead, you dont think anyons would know its a zombie movie? It rhymes with dawn if the dead and when you say it, it doesnt matter if its spelled differently. Its to the point also where anything "of the dead" is obviously a zombie movie.

Phoenix was on it's way to changing before the economy collapsed and stopped it in its tracks. Whether another boom downtown will ever happen again in the future is the question.

Im saying I woudlve given it a different title entirely, like I said I think the title/trailer step on the joke/reveal which happens about 20 minutes in.

So my Dads birthday is coming up and as he's retired and very bored now he keeps talking about wanting to get into vegetable gardening. I was going to buy him some sort of gardening starter kit and some seeds, does anyone know of a good gardening type store in Central Phoenix? I dont think there are any in downtown proper and I know I could just go to Home depot or whatever but Id like to support a local business in Cen Pho if possible.

Yes, the credit can be applied if you bought a condo. I say that because if you have not bought one yet, do not bother because you will not be able to close in time to get the credit.

Both Houses of Congress passed a 7 month extension just today, thru April of 2010. Obama still needs to sign it but it looks like a done deal.

Hoover, try Southwest Gardener in the cute little shopping center at the SEC of Thomas and 7th ave. i think they might have what you would need.
Otherwise, perhaps try Baker's Nursery, Harper's Nursery, or Whitfill Nursery.

Anyone else getting the new Modern Warfare 2 game coming out 11/10/09?

I just read an article on AZCentral that it is expected to surpass Darknight in first week of sales (over $155 million!!!) and it is expected to ultimately sell over $500 million worth of units.
