MUMBAI | Palais Royale | 1,050 FT / 320 M | 66 FLOORS
Palais Royale, Mumbai, India While certainly not the prettiest monster to rise in the booming Mumbai skyline, this corian clad monolith represents a number of 'firsts.' It's the first supertall that started construction in Mumbai (having beaten a number of other towers that got tangled up in bureaucratic approval), its the first residential in India with a LEED Platinum rating, etc. Due to very tall floor heigths, tower breaks supertall heights being only 66 floors high. With list of amenities for residents approaching the ridiculous, this is definately a rich man's tower. The most sigificant thing about this tower to the Indian skyscraper afficianado is not its height (though its tall) nor its design (boring as hell), but the fact that it was the proverbial straw that broke the back of Mumbai's infamous red tape babudom. The approval and subsequent high-speed construction of this tower led to more and more supertalls and talls being built in Mumbai. In the last month and a half alone, Mumbai's Urban Land Ceiling Department has approved over twenty-two supertall skyscrapers (300m+) in Mumbai. So while this tower stands alone in the rendering, all that open mill land next to it will ensure it won't stick out like a sore thumb for long http://img149.imageshack.us/img149/8...le1800x600.jpg http://img529.imageshack.us/img529/7...0royaleey0.png http://img32.imageshack.us/img32/3348/propyi.jpg Quote:

Nice shots. I'd love to visit Mumbai one day. It looks like a great city.
|

Hey great! Jai, thanks for starting a thread for this building. I have now also created a database entry for it - http://skyscraperpage.com/cities/?buildingID=87683

Cool pics... The tower is nothing great, but it's not that terrible. It does look very bland though.
|
I think the design is reminiscent of a lot of supersized Hindu temples in India, which are similarly very massive and monolithic and have ribbed surfaces.
This could be one of those things where an Easterner and a Westerner have totally different opinions on the way this building looks. I would hate to see something like this being built in the U.S., but in Mumbai it fits in and will do fine. I think it's good that different cultures and cities employ really different architectural styles. |
This tower reminds me of a girlfriend I once had. She was tall and fat.
|
in the rendenings it kinda looks like its whitish conrete without cladding not exactly a beauty.
hopefully Mumbai will get many more with greater design and cladding so that this one wont be that visible |
Yeah even I hate this tower
|
If you've ever watched Aftermath: Population Overload on History channel, i feel this is the kind of tower only to be built once that happens.
|
Is this what happens when you ONLY hire engineers?
|
|
Wait...what? The building will be clad in Corian? I've never heard of that before, I thought it was exclusively a countertop material. Does it have properties that make it attractive to high humidity environments?
As for the tower, nothing special that's for sure. Good for Mumbai though, the project is impressive and 22 supertalls (?!?!) is crazy. |

Not a fan of this one, since when did they start making commie blocks so tall?

I think Mumbai could be the next Dubai :)

I can imagine the outrage if something like this happened here.
What a hunk of junk. |
It's frustrating to me the amount of negative comments that non-American style skyscrapers seem to garner on this forum. I fail to see what is so superior about the cookie cutter office towers being built in New York which almost always invariably end up as rectangular prisms clad in blue glass or the pencil thin residential towers that make absolutely no sort of economic or engineering sense except in the context of the ultra-rich having an insatiable desire to outdo one another for the best views. This tower is far from my favorite, but labeling it as a "hunk of junk" hardly seems fair. It certainlly seems much more interesting to me than half the towers proposed for NYC if only due to its novelty although I don't think you'll ever have to worry about it being built there since it looks too massive to even fit on a city block.

Few photos found on SCC.
Notice how massive this building looks compared to other towers. http://img13.imageshack.us/img13/9942/fh86.jpg Credit: http://www.airpix.in/ http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5515/1...6a53200c_b.jpg Posted by danieli on SCC. |
This just may b my least favorite supertall. It looks like a future prison from a bad sci fi movie.:uhh:
|
I'm not impressed by the building, but Mumbai the city is looking better all the time.

Looks like the megablock from Dread.
Almost large enough to be an ARCO if it was mixed use. |
