^ Haha. Robots actually clean it.. kind of like those pool cleaners, or the iRobot vacuum. They're on a track or something.
|
You are right. The Robuglass robot is actually a 2003 improvement. I was not aware of it. Here is a link to a picture showing the mountaineers:

I'm a little confused about this thread and http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/show...122300&page=11 but I guess this one is just the tower itself and the other one is the Piano project--or maybe not. Anyway, I posted on the other one a reference to the new "urban form" renderings and much, much more available at http://www.sfgov.org/site/uploadedfi...view_INDEX.htm and I also posted a sample of the renderings.
|
Yes, this is the Transbay tower (and the new transit center -- for now) itself. The other thread is the former Piano towers proposal. I think that once the new center begins in ernest (say, the start of construction on the temporary terminal), we should start a new thread for it in General Development. Then this thread should be retitled to reflect the Pelli project. I never thought the shorter towers in this thread title referred to the Piano project. I thought those were references to the other towers on Howard and Fremont but maybe I was mistaken.
|
As I understand it, this thread is for the Transbay Tower (Pelli's tower), the Transbay Terminal and the other two towers that were suppose to exceed 800' on Howard and Fremont as p.g. brought up in the last post. Piano's proposal, which I'd like to think is still on the table, is a separate proposal that I dont think has anything to do with Transbay, but is merely in the designated area for rezoning to increase heights.
|
The ">1000'" in this tread title refers to the Transbay Tower. One of the ">800'" towers has become the Piano site returned to 800' from five towers at 600'-1200'. The other ">800'" tower is the "TJPA" tower site on Howard Street, closer to 2nd Street now at 700'.
This thread originally included discussion of all three locations. Now it has become this: http://imgs.sfgate.com/c/pictures/20...tudy_zones.jpg Source: http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/object...MNO010BB08.DTL Should new threads be created to discuss the Transbay Tower, Transbay Transit Center (General Development also?), and TJPA Howard, etc., separately; just as has been created for Piano, 350 Mission, and 181 Fremont? Should this thread remain as general discussion for Transbay as a whole, but not move be moved to General Development? |
Thanks for the info SFView. That cleared up some confusion I had as well. In my opinion, we should keep it as it is now until we start to hear some more serious talks about these projects respectively. Transbay, once work begins on the temporary terminal, should be moved to the "Supertall Construction" forum to reflect the nature of the tower centerpiece. While that thread is there, we might as well post news and pictures regarding the terminals, both temporary and permanent once work begins there also because articles are probably going to refer to both sections in the same article. I guess it would be something like Millenium Tower and 301 Mission (the main tower and its midrise). Both are buildings of the same project and therefore are under the same thread with the tower being the main purpose.

As things move along, you can keep up with dates you should be excited about at http://www.sfgov.org/site/sfra_page.asp?id=5583 |
The next visible sign of progress on this that I'm looking forward to is the construction of the temporary terminal. I think that's supposed to start next winter.
|
Wow now there is going to be a whole bunch of towers. Very Kewl. It will be fun to watch and see what happens...
 |
i would like to see renderings of all three of the designs of the transbay tower

181 Fremont
I tidbit or two from the SF Biztimes (not online yet):
"proposed at 900 ft but planners would like to see it at 700 ft. Just steps from the Transit Center, the razor-thin tower would be clad in high-performance glass to screen out solar heat gain." |
That height makes sense with a 1000' Transbay tower. I like the sound of "razor-thin."
|
There are notices around the temporary terminal site that the trees on Main and Folsom will be removed in preparation for construction. It doesn't say exactly when, but given the notices will be posted until August 8, I'm guessing sometime in August. Maybe they'll start on it in the fall rather than winter?
