Indeed, if we go by the Australian experience, we can deregulate domestic air travel for lower prices if we're prepared to lose a good chunk of our domestic carriers and regional routes.

YTD YVR has exceeded YUL for the first time in total International Passengers (including transborder of course) by ~ 45,500. Not sure if that will continue but that is pretty impressive for tiny little Vancouver. One can argue two separate sub-groups of numbers but at the end of the day all these passengers are flying international. And YUL has a MUCH more significant sun destination network!

YYZ has far more capacity to the Middle East than YUL. Emirates 380, Etihad 77W, AC and El Al to Tel Aviv, Saudi 77W, Egyptair 77W. And if you categorize Cairo as Africa, combined with Ethiopian, YYZ would be a close second in capacity to YUL for service to Africa. Kenya Airways is also expected to start service to YYZ next year using 77L's.

I personally never thought/said that YUL offered more service to the Middle East than YYZ. For that region, YUL has carriers that aren't present anywhere else in Canada just like YYZ with Egyptair, El Al, etc. It's all about population diversity. Montreal has a bigger population of North African origin, so obviously some carriers like RAM, Air Algérie, Royal Jordanian and Syphax (maybe Tunisair eventually) fly out of YUL. Same with YYZ and Pakistan International, Toronto has a strong pakistani/indian population, so a fly route to Islamabad is logical. Also, Toronto is a world-class business city so links with Hong Kong, Beijing and Shanghai are necessary.

YEG to AMS 3x on KLM starting in Nov it sounds like.

CanadianCentaur Sep 14, 2014 9:48 PM

^ Likely using the A330-200, if this route does come into effect.

Coldrsx Sep 14, 2014 10:06 PM

Correct.

I was in Richmond yesterday and the weather was superb. Actually it was so warm that the air was vibrating like on a hot summer day!

Apparently Quantas has now applied to stretch this short term application into year round direct flights from Sydney on a 747.

The growth occurring and upcoming at YVR is simply staggering. I wonder if all this growth will trigger the construction of the third terminal called for in the long term plan.

When they build the third terminal (fourth if you count the south terminal), I do like the idea of the Northeast (I or TB) terminal, but they will likely still need to add a people mover to keep passenger transfer times to/from the Domestic terminal reasonable. I really like the the idea of a west satellite terminal with an underground people mover

Qantas.

Queensland And Northern Territory Aerial Services.

It's great that it is starting up again, though this is certainly not the first time they've tried to compete on the route. This time, at least, it will be direct which will make it more competitive.

Airboy Sep 26, 2014 5:33 PM

This does not affect most people here but could effect numbers altough small at 3 southern airports, and will affect some charter and cargo flights.

I thought they sere also direct last time? With a stop in San Fransisco or Honolulu (I don't recall which).

It was a stop at SFO. AC used to stop at HNL. He likely meant "non-stop" YVR-SYD.

YVR August Figures

I was requested to post what I posted in the YVR thread here. So here it is... with some help from craneSpotter to get the stats rolling!

Incredible results.

Total Passengers: 2,086,481 (+8.0%)

Domestic: 1,079,507 +8.2%
International (incl TB): 1,006,974 +7.7
Transborder: 510,057 +9.1%

YTD: 13,238,277 (+8.1%)

First month overall smashing through 2 million.
First month domestic smashing through 1 million.
First month international (incl TB) smashing through 1 million.
First month transborder smashing through half a million.
Best month ever in each category except miscellaneous int'l of course.

Increase in pax compared to Aug 2013 - this really shows the huge growth:

Overall up 153,800
Domestic up 81,600
Transborder up 42,800
Asia Pacific up 20,500
Europe up 8,200
Misc int'l up 700

YTD just shy of 1,000,000 more pax than 2013 as well... thought I would throw that in.

And cargo up 13.3%
