Goodbye Wooden Planks ~ The 8th Street Bridge/Downtown

Here is a bit of transportation/bike and pedestrian commuter news.

This bridge was part of Boise's historic streetcar/trolley route in the early 1900's. I am trying to find photos online of a streetcar on the bridge, but so far no luck.

8th Street Pedestrian Bridge Project

Crews will be replacing the wood planking on the bridge with concrete to increase accessibility.

The bridge will be closed throughout the duration of the replacement project.

A detour will be put in place for pedestrians and cyclists.

The project started July 7 and will take 3 months to complete.

aren't they also installing LED lighting to the bridge, or was that already done?

That has been completed.

This is going to be fantastic. The first two renderings at the link show what the improvements will look like compared to the final two which are what the blocks currently look like, ;)before the current sidewalk and trees were removed from 8th next to The Hoff. The missing trees and torn out sidewalk adjacent to The Hoff looks apocalyptic.

https://map.ccdcboise.com/listings/8...-improvements/

Quote:

Streetscape improvements include:

-New street trees will be added along Bannock and 8th to add atmosphere and expand the urban tree canopy network.
-The sidewalk from Bannock to Jefferson will be expanded to accommodate future patio uses and extend the pedestrian network.
-Protected bike lanes will be added, extending the aesthetic and ease of access to local businesses for cyclists.
-A dedicated southbound bike lane and northbound shared lane will be added to 8th. These facilities complete the bicycle corridor from the Boise River to the North End.

Another block of 8th Street will be closed to traffic for outdoor dining. Considering that 8th Street is a narrow one lane street, maybe the city will keep it closed to traffic permanently.

8th Street between Main and Bannock to close for more outdoor dining opportunities

Businesses interested in expanding their outdoor eating options have four concepts to consider:

• Longitudinal Expansion: expand patio seating laterally along a building.
•Parklet Expansion: expand patio seating in parking spaces.
•Sidewalk Expansion: Same model as 8th Street, where existing patio seating is extended to the sidewalk
•Partial Street Closure: Close a street fully to allow for patios to expand and reroute sidewalks and bike lanes

I miss the wood and I know I am not the only one.
But, this concrete surface is much more user friendly for our fellow Boiseans who get around in wheelchairs. The old wood surface was bumpy and uneven.

Maybe Parks and Rec and Boise Arts and History can team up for some post installation bling?

Boise Airport moves forward with parking expansion By RYAN SUPPE rsuppe@idahopress.com
Quote:

A five-story passenger garage with more than 1,000 parking spaces — to be constructed on a surface parking lot — is currently in design phase. The design should be complete within six months, Hupp said, at which time the airport will reevaluate construction timelines based upon demand.

Looks like the Boise airport is aggressively trying to add new destinations. According to the Statesman, they're looking at direct flights to Orlando, Honolulu, Anchorage and Boston to go along with the recently announced flights to Nashville, New York and Atlanta.

There was also talk a couple of years ago about adding flights to western Canadian cities, in addition to cities in Mexico. I think that was the plan once the new concourse was built, but the airport expansion has been put on hold due to the pandemic.

Highway 16 Extension

A big enough announcement is should go on the thread:

Long-awaited I-84 connection across the Treasure Valley gets funding approval
https://www.idahostatesman.com/news/...mainstage_lead

Quote:

The Idaho Transportation Department plans to begin work to connect Idaho 16 to Interstate 84 next year.

The second phase of the Idaho 16 expansion project includes extending the highway 5 miles from U.S. 20/26 (Chinden Boulevard) to I-84. It also includes an interchange with I-84, connections at Franklin and Ustick roads, and bridges over local roads, canals and railroad tracks, ITD said in a press release.

The complete project will provide a high-speed, north-south route from the Star and Eagle Island State Park areas across the Treasure Valley.

“The Idaho 16 highway corridor is one of the Idaho Transportation Department’s top priorities for addressing growth throughout the Treasure Valley,” ITD said on its project website. “This project will result in the valley’s first north-south expressway from Interstate 84 to (Highway) 44.”

The Idaho Transportation Board approved funding for the project on Wednesday. The money was part of $350 million the Legislature approved for transportation projects.

I've got mixed feelings on this. A north/south alternate would be nice but highways really aren't the answer anymore. This will just speed up suburban development in NW Meridian and NE Nampa.

Passenger trains at the Boise Depot? City council hopes to resurrect Amtrak line By RYAN SUPPE rsuppe@idahopress.com
Quote:

BOISE — The Boise City Council wants to resurrect a passenger railroad route that once connected Boise to Salt Lake City, Portland, Oregon, and Seattle.

Amtrak’s Pioneer line, discontinued in 1997, carried passengers from Salt Lake City through southern Idaho, with stops in Pocatello, Boise, Nampa and other Idaho cities, to Portland, which currently has passenger rail service to Seattle. A proposed Boise City Council resolution — co-authored by all six council members — supports restoring the route between Salt Lake City and Portland, including a stop at the long-dormant Boise Depot, which the city has owned since 1996.

Airlines flocking to BOI

Quote:

In the past 6 months, the Boise Airport has seen a bunch of new flights, including to Atlanta, Palm Springs, Orange County.

Starting this summer, the airport will begin non-stop services to places like Nashville and New York City. Alaska Airlines is adding nonstop flights from Boise Airport to Chicago and Austin, Texas, the airline announced back in March.

"Airlines are really looking at markets where they can grow and have more passengers traveling to," explained Briggs. "Boise is well-positioned as a mountain region with access to open space, and it's really a growing region with a great economy."

As Idaho News 6 has previously reported, Idaho's economy is rebounding faster than almost anywhere in the country--that could lead to an even bigger boost, with more travel.

I wonder if all of this activity will get the expansion started again. sounds like we'll need a larger airport sooner rather than later.

Evo5Boise Jun 25, 2021 1:21 AM

I work for the city and I can tell you that the expansion plans are still in place, things are just being shuffled. The new east expansion parking garage is getting pushed to the front of the line. That will be first in line and should break ground soon. The infrastructure for the employee garage is all in place, however, they have delayed that for the time being. That will most likely be next followed by the rental car extension and garage. Concourse A to follow.
