Casa V in Mexico City / by Serrano Monjaraz Arquitectos
By Al Hilal on Saturday, December 10, 2011

Casa V was developed according to the topography of the lot. The street entrance is through the parking area that has a skylight with a fountain on the top. There is a staircase case that leads up to the garden levels. The center structure is the house surrounded by the morning and evening gardens determined according to the exposure of the sun.

Sand-Brick Sossusvlei Lodge in the Namib Desert Protects the Land, People and Wildlife
by Tafline Laylin, 12/09/11

The Namib Desert in Southwest Africa is by far one of the most beautiful, but ecologically-sensitive regions on earth. So when &BEYOND built their Sossusvlei Lodge just outside the majestic Namibrand Nature Reserve, they did everything they could to ensure the most negligible environmental impact possible. &BEYOND's Tarryn Gibson told us that "preventive initiatives are a priority" at Sossusvlei, and the building was tucked into the base of the mountain to protect against strong seasonal winds. Sourcing building materials locally were also a primary focus, in turn eliminating the project's resulting carbon footprint while offering employment opportunities for local communities.

Stone House, Luberon Valley, France
Carl Fredrik Svenstedt builds with stone from the Pont du Gard within ruins of original farmhouses

The house is built on an abandoned farm overlooking the Luberon Valley, a protected regional park with strict guidelines imposing traditional building materials.

The ruins of the farmhouses were preserved so as to frame the new house, while the guesthouse and pool were inserted within the old stone walls. The main house is built with solid sandstone blocks of 50 x 50 x 200cm, quarried next to the Pont du Gard and extracted since Roman times.

Cove 3, Pezula Knysna, South Africa
Sustainable family home creates illusion of being immersed in the natural landscape

Situated in The Cove at Pezula Estate outside Knysna, on the West Coast of South Africa, this family home enjoys sea views to the East and South.

The idea was to create a living space with a single roof element floating over it that responded to the slope of the site. The roof is set at a high level so that it is hidden from the living space, creating the illusion that one is surrounded by the landscape.

These homes really ARE amazing but I feel that they are waste of good design.

I want to make them the bases and/or penthouses of residential towers and repeat the same layout down every floor...

Is that strange?

^ I don't see why not. The Presidio in Vancouver is like that iirc.

Spa House, Cape Town, South Africa
Mountainside home integrated into its powerful natural surroundings

Spa House is set on the mountainside on the urban edge of Hout Bay, overlooking the bay and harbour, and surrounded by weathered sandstone formations. The primary design intention was to integrate the building with the powerful landscape and to derive its poetics from the qualities of its surroundings.

The house is separated from the principal residence by a berm, and is connected to it by footpaths. The brief called for a guest house and entertainment facility. It incorporates swimming pools, guest accommodation, spa facilities and general living and poolside areas.

Gorgeous Origami-Esque Klein Bottle House Nestles Into Australia’s Landscape
by Tafline Laylin, 12/22/11

The Klein Bottle House is a gorgeous structure that has been recognized for its funky origami twist and modern aesthetic. In response to an awkward site astride Rye Beach's dramatic landscape in Australia, McBride Charles Ryan gave the house the shape of a "Klein Bottle" - a mathematical non-orientable surface that has no boundary and does not distinguish between left and right. If that's a little hard to wrap your head around, know that despite its complex geometric design, this home is actually very livable.

House of the Issue> Minarc

A house in Venice, California employs futuristic construction technology and an open plan.

The 2,400-square-foot Superb-A House is a radical in disguise. From the street, it seems like just another cubist addition to the growing roster of crisp, modestly-scaled residences that make Venice the most rewarding showcase of contemporary residential architecture in LA. However, the home’s cedar siding and cement board cladding conceal an innovative structure that could transform the building industry. The walls, upper floor, and ceiling are composed of modular, self-reinforced panels of styrofoam, slotted into a steel frame.

Law Street House, Melbourne, Australia
Australian Architects complete residence on weekends over 3 and half years

Located in a tight single lane street the original dilapidated one bedroom workman's cottage built in the 1880s formed the initial brief for architect's/owner builders Bruno Mendes and Amy Muir. To pursue the desire to construct using one's own hands formed a very important part of the brief. While working full time in practice the new house was constructed on weekends over 3 and half years by the architects.

Casa Bosques, Clearwater Bay, Hong Kong
Architects make the most of strict building specifications in Hong Kong’s new territories

The driving force behind the concept of this renovation project was to enhance the feeling of space and re-orientate the outlook to capitalise on the forest that was on its door step. By closing down openings that were overlooked by neighbours and opening up walls that faced the forest, the outlook has been transformed and privacy has been ensured. Furthermore, by opening up the perimeter wall to embrace the greenery, a tangible connection with nature has been created and the virtual size of the garden multiplied. Internally, restraint in the layout has helped magnify a feeling of openness whilst light, filtered through the leaves of the trees and internal gardens, floods in through ideally located windows and doors.

SA Residence, Dhaka, Bangladesh
SHATOTTO use water as inspiration in their soul soothing home in Bangladesh

As Lalon, a spiritual folk singer and philosopher, said in eighteenth century, "if there is not one thing inside the body then it is not outside the body either". Just like human body, there is a body of architecture. Human body has two parts, shell and thinking as soul. Architecture has similar, shell and Mother Nature as soul. Shell and soul are interdependent yet independent. They belong to each other and they belong to themselves. A good soul needs a good shell.

Barnes Coy Architects complete glass house design in Amagansett

The house is mainly comprised of a glass crescent elevated to "see" above a tall barrier dune towards the Atlantic Ocean. The crescent warps the main interior spaces out allowing peripheral views to the east and west in addition to the dominant view to the south. The crescent is incised with a void containing a terrace producing glass corners that further emphasise views up and down the beach. The terrace void maintains the roof shape of the crescent in the form of flying beams that produce interesting shadows and define this area as a dramatic outdoor room suspended in the sky.
