I don't even think the size of the footprint matters. It's the way buildings are woven into the existing fabric of the city. New York is known for it's canyons and side by side buildings, which creates the streetwall. The Empire State Building has a very large footprint, but many times I have walked by the building not even realizing it, or have shown it to out of towners who wouldn't have realized it. It's a city of streetwalls. Central Park Tower will be known from the street mostly for the large Nordstrom at the base. 53w53 will be an expansion of the MOMA, so it will draw that crowd. Likewise, Steinway (which is basically Steinway Hall) will be a landmark with upscale retail at the base. On the skyline, however, it will be a different matter.

Thanks for this video - your shooting is remarkably clear and stable considering the distance! Rockaway is a sort of strange and pleasant part of New York - I always felt it was a bit of a strange place, in the sense that it has a very different feel than the rest of New York City, yet also feels distinct from coastal Long Island towns.

According to the photo below, it does seem to have just surpassed the roof of the ESB.

And wow, this is probably the best photo of NYC's (not just Manhattan's) skyline I have ever seen.

As it stands now its the 3rd tallest tower in the country by roof height. Only WTC1 and Willis Tower are taller. 1368 feet and 1350 respectively.

Willis is 1,450 to the roof, and 432 park avenue in NY is also taller at 1,397.

The real number of floors (1 floor = 1 roof) of this tower will be 103 and not 99, because there are also 4 intermediate floors.

Same. I'll bet those two little specks directly to the right of the tower in this pano are the towers of the new TZB.

I think now, central park tower is around 1280ft height it s not surpassing the roof of the one world trade Center at this moment according To the last skyline picture

I keep forgetting about 432. No clue why since its right there but I am pretty sure Willis Tower is 1354 to top floor. 1450 is the tip. Remember, discussing top occupied floor. Not architectural height or tip of the building.

Noticed that as well but assumed the elevation difference of midtown was causing that effect.

Central Park Tower Approaches 1,550-Foot Pinnacle, Nears Tallest Roof Height In New York City & The Western Hemisphere

Quote:

Wrapping up the year and YIMBY’s construction countdown, it comes as no surprise that Extell‘s Central Park Tower tops the list. The supertall will soon become New York City’s tallest residential building, and it will also have the highest roof of any structure in the Five Boroughs. The 1,550-foot-tall tower is being designed by Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture. The site has previously gone by its address, 217 West 57th Street. The building has now surpassed its 90th floor, and currently stands over 1,300 feet atop 57th Street.

Looking south from Central Park, north from Lower Manhattan, or across either river from New Jersey and Queens, the building is now very prominent, and imminently set to surpass Harry Macklowe’s 1,396 foot tower at 432 Park Avenue. Although plans for a proposed spire that would’ve brought the total height to 1,775 feet have been scrapped, the additional 154 feet of residential and mechanical floors compared to 432 Park will still ensure Central Park Tower’s absolute dominance atop 57th Street.

Central Park Tower will dominate the back half of the Midtown skyline thoroughly, as seen from the World Trade Center. Inside the retail base, Nordstrom is planning on opening its flagship department store early next year. Up above, work will continue apace. The base is covered in a translucent wave of frosted wavy glass on 57th and 58th Streets. At night, a soft warm glow illuminates the radiant exterior. Entrances to the future 320,000-square-foot Nordstrom are found on 57th Street, and also along Broadway.
