This Cogswell/Gottingen area is improving by leaps and bounds but still has the strange Staples. It was up for sale and I wonder if it'll be torn down soon.

It's interesting how downtown Halifax hotel options have expanded even during the pandemic and post-pandemic period. It used to have very mediocre hotel options but Muir, Moxy, and Sutton Place are all new and different for that market. I would still say it doesn't have a lot of higher-end major hotels, but maybe that will change in the coming years.

Skye includes a hotel component but with fewer than 100 rooms. Sutton Place is 262 rooms.

Impressive Halifax updates! Definitely a slate of projects worth being proud about.

someone123 Oct 24, 2023 7:02 PM

7177 Quinpool Rd is new and different for the city as a tall, narrow tower with decorative offset balconies. The jury's still out on how it will ultimately look but I could see it impacting the local culture somewhat around what kind of buildings people want or feel are appropriate in different places. The new library built a decade or so ago had an impact on the acceptance of modern architectural styles.

There was a group of people who were traumatized by 60's/70's projects like Fenwick and the Maritime Centre and basically viewed highrises as concrete blobs to be minimized (ironically they often pushed for planning rules that encouraged uglier squat buildings). They would assume that an area like the Northwest Arm would look best with as little development as possible. I think that perception is becoming less common now, and NS is mostly wilderness and small towns or villages so hopefully people can eventually accept that it can be interesting and useful to urbanize a small number of these natural settings.

Halifax may be one hour ahead of Ottawa in time, but in modern architecture it is 20 years ahead.

you're right.. and that's sad...particularly for a capital city.

WhipperSnapper Oct 24, 2023 10:04 PM

I don't know. Quantity and height is impressive but, there's also of mediocre there. I would like to give the edge to Halifax 5 to 10 years ago. I think there's enough to give today the edge

Richmond Yard is interesting. The cladding is decent. The main tower is odd but, the cladding pulls it off. The main tower in relation to the completed first phase doesn't feel v cohesive and homey.

There are a lot of towers under construction not pictured there although most are just at a site prep or excavation phase so not very interesting. A lot of urban infill type construction is lowrise. Dartmouth in particular is going to get a lot of new towers relative to what is there today.

The total crane count is probably in the 30-40 range or maybe higher (I think it was 36 or something a while ago). I would say the new crop of buildings coming up generally looks a bit nicer than the current ones pictured here, although the quality was actually better around the late 2010's. Part of what happened is that the bank office leases were up so they moved into prime new office buildings (TD, BMO, RBC), and a new convention centre was built. Queen's Marque is part office and got Stewart McKelvey, largest law firm in the region. These days there is no office demand but tons of demand for housing. It is more that the type of project shifted rather than architectural standards backpedaling.

Hawrylyshyn Oct 25, 2023 1:31 PM

This project is coming along well and is arguably turning into the best tower in the city.

That's just human nature.

People waited two hours for a freaking In N' out burger in Langley, BC last month. Hype culture will get certain people to wait or pay way more than they normal would for very average things.

WhipperSnapper Nov 6, 2023 4:03 PM

I lined up for 3 hours to get on the newest Wonderland roller coaster when I was 18ish. It didn't feel like waiting for most of those 3 hours. I can relate to the teen blonde in the yellow shoes and her two buddies. The lone guy in the ball cap and grey hoodie is just depressing. He is clearly questioning his choice too.

Presumably, the 3 towers on Front are being occupied on a daily basis. Pizza and moving and waiting in line is a break from the chaos.

Really looking forward to the Well. It's the most ambitious project Toronto built in the last decade, and the most ambitious real estate development project in Canada right now (maybe Oakridge would be at the same level).

It also pulls the centre of gravity west, establishing Spadina as a core downtown street. Spadina already is downtown, but it's kind of peripheral downtown. The Well is kind of to this part of Toronto what Rockefeller Center was the Midtown Manhattan in the 1930s.

I'm happy that this one has progressed from proposal to construction so quickly - I hope it turns out exactly as rendered.

That area has sure grown up as well. Went from basically zero towers to being completely enclosed in a little over a decade. This is the sort of environment where this type of development makes sense - though I wish more of it looked like 101 Spadina and less like the generic blue spandrel towers.
