Ottawa Throwback Pics

A dedicated thread for older pictures of projects in their pre-completion or demolition phases. I love seeing them scattered through the threads, but here is a place to collect them.

I'll kick off:

I enjoyed it!

Makes me wonder about how we can safeguard this site and it's photos. I don't see Flickr going anywhere but I know there are a bunch of old threads where the photos are simply gone forever.

As an aside... does anyone know if my photo will disappear if I move it to another album on Flickr? I suppose I could test it out but if anyone flat out knows that would be great.

Harley613 Sep 20, 2022 2:29 AM

I'm worried about something far more diabolical...SSP disappearing overnight like Emporis did. I had beers with J.OT13 and the owner of SSP a few years ago and it sounded like things were going well, but who knows now. I wonder what the State of the Union is now.

kevinbottawa Sep 20, 2022 2:46 PM

I have a crap load of these. Reminds me of an exciting time in Ottawa. Kinda makes me sad looking at these. The momentum is gone. There was a time when the proposals were coming fast.

I had a pro account for years on flickr, then they wanted to start charging 40 bucks a year. I cancelled it and downloaded all my pics. There is supposed to be a 1000 photo limit or something, but so far they are still all there. I get an ominous email once and a while telling me 'you are in violation of our limit'. Well, just delete them, then.

Flickr got sucker punched by instagram, facebook and amazon offering free photo uploads.

When Flickr told me that they were taking away my pics (which they still have not done), I downloaded everything to a external drive. And I used to pay 15 bucks a month for a pro subscription, but now they want 40? Fuck off.

And I DO see flickr disappearing, that's why they offered this.

I recently started a second flickr account for sharing on here, as I had reached the 1000 limit on the first one. I only use Flickr for sharing on here, so it doesn't matter to me at all that my images are split across two accounts.

I'm still a way a ways from 1000 photos and I figured at some point I would need to make a second account. Even if I downloaded all my photos the links to all the threads would be gone and it would be a nightmare to go back and restore. Anyhow.. no point in worrying about it.

This thread with the oldies are great. Wish I didn't lose/break my phone every 18 months haha. I'd have some pitch on this one otherwise.

Not all construction was without major problems. No, this is not a demolition. This building at 301 Elgin collapsed while under construction on March 31, 1966. As a kid, I saw the results. Shocking! One fatality.

Thanks for those throwbacks Harls! Weird to think that the Corktown Footbridge was approved under Chiarelli's reign. That was the first true cycling/pedestrian major infrastructure built by the City afaik. Bridges over the Queensway built before then don't count cause cyclists are not allowed to use them, and are more for drivers (see alternative to the Blair overpass Blair road, which has no sidewalk).

Never heard of this one before. Quite tragic. Thanks for sharing. Heron Bridge was another around that same era.

It would seem that 1966 was a bad year for such things. On August 10, 1966 a section of the Heron Road Bridge collapsed, while under construction. The final report stated that "green wood" was being used in the falsework, which could not support the load of the wet concrete.

A memorial stone bearing the names of those who died in that tragedy is on the west end of the south bridge.

And look, Somerset House didn't look quite as bad back then. Imagine how much cheaper it would have been to fix it up at the time.

I received my first Blockbuster card from that location on Bank St. when I was attending Carleton. I think I still have it saved some place, so my great grandchildren can find it and say 'wtf' or equivalent.

Thanks to our sponsor J.OT13, here is a photo thread on the Somerset House demolition that I took back in December of 2007.

Was digging through some old files looking for something and came across these.

I was lurking around here at that time but never posted. Was heading for.. something with wifey and told her are making some photo stops along the way.

All photos are from June 23, 2013.

About.. 17 pixels of actual Cathedral Hill. Must have been below grade still and had no shot.
