I didn't take any pics, but drove by and there is a lot of work starting to happen at Palmtower.

The adjacent on-street parking has been completely fenced off and most of the sidewalk and curb have been removed along with a ton of palm trees. Also, looks like they are starting to move some dirt around.

Awesome to see this finally happening!

Not much of an update but passed by today and there is now excavating equipment on site and the dead palms have been removed.

Project has now been listed on Clayco's project page.

Oh God, you can see how bad Derby is now that they've begun taking down the cover in #2.

What is so bad about Derby? I think it looks real nice.

I drove by and stopped to take a good look at it on Friday. It actually looks better than it did when they first started removing the construction drape. I think it will look much better from the south when all of the drape is removed, revealing the architectural design elements. The part that concerns me most is the north side of the parking garage podium and the tower wall. Just one big beige-ish slab. The rendering seems to show some kind of texture/design for this area. I hope they do something with it.

Obadno Feb 21, 2022 10:53 PM

IF we are going to complain about an ugly high rise the X society is by far the most horrendous thing ever built downtown.

I'd have to agree. I really hope Phase 2 makes it less of an abomination. Lol

They should repaint the Angel's Trumpet mural on the side of that giant parking podium. Since they covered it up. Would love that.

CrestedSaguaro Feb 22, 2022 2:47 AM

I've been watching Derby's southside get uncovered the past week. It's not really bad at all. The orange highlights under the windows actually have a hue to them and have a copper glare in the direct sunlight.

I dont think it will help much, the additional height will make the stumpy monstrosity look a bit less awful but overall its still ugly as hell.

Let's just hope that future, taller developments surround it enough to obscure it. :runaway:

Anyone notice that the base of the tower crane is in place now? Anyone know when that is scheduled to go up? I don't see the pieces on site.

They still need to build the remainder of the rebar cage around the feet of the tower crane base, pour the foundation, and wait approx. a week for it to cure before they can install the tower crane. So I would say a minimum 2 weeks before it goes up.

I drive by yesterday and it looks like the crane is about 280' or so. Tall enough to clear APS.

CrestedSaguaro Mar 15, 2022 3:58 PM

Also, you can view the crane going up live here: https://api.wetmet.net/widgets/strea...032b163a93e6b7

Sometimes the camera angle moves here and there. But right now it's pointing at downtown as of this posting.

Obadno Mar 15, 2022 4:23 PM

Man that view!

With Astra, Central station, Palm tower and the new developments at Central/Filmore and South of Footprint center the skylines really going to fill out in the next 2 years.

Hopefully some form of Barrister gets revived, the Hyatt Garage happens, Edith and that additional tower on the Chase garage come through!

I have that view blown up on one of my work monitors :haha:

It's awesome to watch the planes come in for a landing as well. Best cam view in Phoenix IMHO.

Viewing area?

It looks like there's a viewing area for construction inside of Arizona Center on the bottom left side of camera one.

Looks like a bunch of VIP's. I wonder if this is an "official" groundbreaking ceremony?

I'm glad to read this tidbit of information. Good to see something with higher-quality materials going up. LJC also added a couple of renderings of the pool deck. Looks pretty good.

One aspect of this project that I have always been confident in - with it being a bruder design - is that we were going to get an interesting façade!

Passed by today and there appear some concrete forms in place. Doesn't appear there be any major below grade work done i.e. below grade parking.

I believe it's all podium parking.

it is taller than both by at least 30 feet i think so it will look good next to those two buildings, which still look good to me after 30 years...squat but nice looking still

The One and Two Arizona Center buildings are 240 and 260 feet respectively. That would make Palmtower 56-76 feet taller, so it should be noticeable, but also wish it was a little taller!

I've always questioned the listed heights of AZ Center's towers. Are we absolutely sure they are 240' and 260'? I wasn't here when they were built, so I don't have any numbers on them. But they look taller than that to me. Derby is 239' and One AZ Center (shorter tower) looks much taller than Derby when viewing from a distance.

Does anyone have any of the original documents from when they were proposed or built?

I may be mistaken but wasn't Palmtower originally proposed at 32 floors?

CANUC Oct 28, 2022 9:17 PM

Just an observation, Palm is really starting to get some height. More impressive from the street level than the webcams. The elevator core is about 1 floor above what appears to be a completed garage portion. So maybe around the 9th or 10th-ish floor.

Palm Towers height was 10 stories on Dec. 1st. So 1.5 months later its at 15. With 15 floors to go it will likely be topped out by May.

That amenity deck on the 6th floor looks pretty cool. It will be north facing and guarded by the tower so I wonder how much sun it will get? Maybe that's the point

Could be. During the summer, some pools with direct southern or western exposure get too warm to really cool down in.
