I pleasantly surprised how green the city looks in many of these pictures. The city has been emphasizing being more green via the street tree program and whatnot. Not to get off on a tangent, but does anyone have any before / after views from like a decade back to compare?

Philly is looking beautiful!

I noticed that. Went to the largest scale on image on Flicker. I think it's a large add being towed by a single engine plane, which is up and off to the left a bit.

Not exactly what you're looking for, but Google Maps street view lets you select older views, so you can see specific areas that way.

Wow, as someone who moved to philly in 2012 for college, it's astounding to me that 33 high rises have finished since 2013 and that 15 more are under construction, several of which are almost finished. That's some amazing momentum! I almost dont even realize how different things are since they're so densely packed. This makes me very excited about the next decade ahead!

Coworking operator Industrious plans second Philly location -- at Two Liberty Place tower

Quote:

Industrious, a shared-office operator, plans to open one of Center City’s biggest coworking spaces in the Two Liberty Place tower.

The New York-based company intends to begin operating the 55,000-square-foot space spread across two stories of the tower at 50 S. 16th St. before next spring, it said in a news release Tuesday.

Hopefully the increase in development at SY will let the 'gap' between 21st+Market up to PECO be filled in.

A MFL stop would also do wonders for that area's development, but not sure if that's actually feasible.

Wow.

PROGRESS.

In the end, Gauthier kicked Blackwell's *ss.

Up about 3,000 votes with all but 3 precincts reporting.

Gauthier's platform was spot on for that district...perfect candidate. Hopefully, Kenyatta and Darrell are paying attention.

On an interesting note, Matt Wolfe (President of the Logan Square Neighborhood association) came in third on the at large ballot on the Republican side. I'll probably cross over to vote for him in the general...likely making him and Al Schmidt my only Republican votes.

I know Matt personally and will probably vote for him, but he is most assuredly not affiliated with the Logan Square Neighborhood Association — he resides in West Philly.

You may be thinking of LSNA president Drew Murray, but he didn't make the cut, coming in 6th yesterday.

THIS IS AN EXAMPLE OF HOW PHILADELPHIA IS IMPROVING EVER SO SLOWLY.

I'm proud to have been one of the people who voted for Gauthier yesterday morning. Jannie Blackwell has been running West Philly since I was growing up near 52nd and Haverford in the 2000s. I'm so glad that I had the opportunity to kick her out of the 3rd District!

The next step should be to work towards kicking Kenyatta Johnson and Darrell Clarke out of their respective offices. The gap between Johnson and Vidas wasn't that far apart, and I believe that he can be gone with another election cycle and more development in his district. Also, I believe that taking the 5th from Clarke is easier than some people think. the 5th District includes CC, Fishtown, and neighborhoods that continue to change as newcomers move further into North Philly (seems like an unbelievable statement to make, even as recently as five years ago!). Plus, his district has an asset that many people overlook: the student population of Temple University. There are more students who live on and off campus than there are people who turned out to vote for Clarke. Engaging the newer residents of the district, plus holding a massive drive to register Temple students to vote in Philadelphia County, could remove him from office.

At some point, I'm going to make a second foray into Philly politics (I was going to run for Ward Committeeperson, but I was in my senior year at Temple). I believe the time is right for young, energized candidates, especially those who are natives. The only issue is that I'm 23, so I can't run for too many positions yet. I already know people and, potentially, PACs who would back me should I end up running.

Agree. Now we need some Gauthier-type candidates to challenge Clarke and Johnson in the next cycle. In my opinion, they are the most problematic council members remaining. Certainly among the most anti-development, except perhaps when it's their personal friends bidding for a contract or jockeying for a landbank property. Great to see new blood. Good luck!

It's interesting because you would think that but she did pretty poorly across the board, particularly in places like Mill Creek, western Mantua, and Parkside. She even dropped several wards out in Cobbs Creek where support should have been strong.

I think it speaks to the fact that she has been absent and self-interested for a long time and people finally realized that they can do better.

To be fair, West Philly has gone through some positive changes in the past 10+ years, even while under Blackwell's tutelage. In this timeframe, more businesses have started, more people moved in, property values increase, Baltimore Ave in West Philly improved with better street lighting and landscape. With new leadership, we can hope and expect that this will continue and be built upon to make it better for the people living and doing business in West Philly. Good luck to the new councilwoman!

low turnout means anything can happen. I dont think it's so much of a massive wave of opposition that sunk Blackwell, its simply that the new person had more engaged followers that showed up in greater numbers in a low turnout election. Blackwell likely NEVER Got a lot of votes in these primaries- she was unopposed so it didn't really matter.

That's about right.

She was never a force politically on her own - most of her juice came from her name and the power of the Democratic machine in this city. I'm having a hard time remembering any serious challengers to her seat in the 18 years or so that I've been a voter in that district. This current time was a perfect storm of forces that was set to leave her dusted and rightfully so. There is a frustration amongst people in the far western parts of the district where I live - cross 52nd Street and you'll see a different West Philadelphia than the realtors would have you believe. Blackwell's presence (or lack thereof) isn't much of factor in why things aren't as good as they are elsewhere in the district and there's only so much a councilperson can do in a short timeframe to visibly make a dent in entrenched poverty but for once in this city's history people sided with the devil that they didn't know...maybe a good sign?

It was a given that Blackwell reached her peak 20+ years ago, and it wasn't much of one, but I believe caution should be used about Gauthier. Just being better then Blackwell is a very, very low bar to cross, and there are many questions, big unanswered questions about Gauthier's campaign-----like where did all the money come from, who are backers, who is she going to be listening to? The biggest surprise is that Blackwell put up such a minimum effort in running a re-election drive; she did less this year when she had a serious contender then in past elections when she was running pretty much against no one.

I'm hoping for the best from Gauthier, but expecting a 'Blackwell lite' at best. The last think West Philly needs is basically more of the same for the next 20 years.

2 new boutique hotels for Center City

Two new boutique hotels are planned for Center City, each seeking to capture a different niche in the market.

In the Midtown section of Philadelphia, Estia Group, a family-owned company known locally for its Greek restaurant Estia and Italian restaurant Pietro’s, plans to develop a 14-story hotel called Blu Ivy at 11th and Sansom streets that will have 86 rooms. The hotel will have a health-and-wellness focus. Closer to Love Park and the Pennsylvania Convention Center, the Lau family of New York plans at 15th and Cherry streets to develop a 14-story, 29,000-square-foot building called the Revival Hotel that will have 64 micro rooms.

I like the Blue Ivy rendering a lot for the old Midtown diner location as well.

The 15th and Cherry location is not the parking lot? The small building on the corner -- right?

Honestly, this is a huge improvement of the Midtown II both in aesthetics and use.

The biggest surprise is that Blackwell put up such a minimum effort in running a re-election drive; she did less this year when she had a serious contender then in past elections when she was running pretty much against no one.

I'm hoping for the best from Gauthier, but expecting a 'Blackwell lite' at best. The last think West Philly needs is basically more of the same for the next 20 years.

what about her background suggests she is Blackwell 2.0? What sort of person WOULD be qualified to take this seat and be considered a legitimate upgrade? I don't see much that connects Blackwell and Gauthier.
