Internet speeds?
Just wondering how the average Vancouverite is doing on internet speeds. I was paying for Shaw "warp" and it was stuttering on HD youtubes so I got a new modem and it dropped even more to sub-10Mbps. So they did a service call, gave me "Internet 60" and now I get this:

Very nice! My download speed's not quite as fast but still perfectly fine for my needs.

This is what 80$ of telus service gets me.

CIK Telecom 30/5 - $39/month - runs on Shaw's network

The letter grade could be linked to the provider itself.

Womp womp. Telus $80/month noted above. Can't wait for Telus Fibre, which is supposedly much faster and the same price.

I closed all my tabs and retried and the result is improved.

I have a pretty crappy internet connection here in Mexico compared to what you guys get in Vancouver.
http://www.speedtest.net/result/5298077846.png But I pay less than $30 for internet, phone (including unlimited calls to US, Canada and western Europe), and TV. |

It is pretty much exactly what I pay for (Shaw 30). I regularly check and and over my wired connection, my connection speed has never dropped bellow what I pay for. But how do some of you guys clearly get in excess of your plan's upload speed? I used to have shaw 60 for the higher upload speed (and then when they doubled the upload speeds at Christmas I downgraded to 30. I was tempted to switch to Telus, but now the upload speeds are very similar at the price points). |

But the thing is you dont have to be short on the upload side if only the ISP had a proper ratio. But that doesn't sell in this current market. Also when people compare our speeds to others speeds you need to add up to download and upload. Some guy in Czechia with 300 down and 200 up has a significantly better service then some Canadian with 400 down and 20 up. |

I was already placing an order for Teksavvy, but as I was clicking through their order process the fees just kept adding up and in the end just the fees would have been around $350! With Telus there is no installation fee and no new hardware needed, so there are no fees for me to pay. That $350 will go a long way in paying for the higher monthly price ($68/month vs. $45/month) for the same 25 Mbps fibre optics internet. It feels such a waste to have fibre come in your apartment and not be able to utilize it! Like mentioned, Telus' pricing for fibre internet is a joke vs. Urbanfibre and not even nearly as fast. The service representative didn't believe me when I told him what price Urbanfibre is charging for their 1Gbps service, until he checked their website. He was dumbfounded to say the least. At least I have a month-to-month contract that I can cancel the moment either Novus (or blessed be the heavens, Urbanfibre) expands to our building. Until then... :( |

The city of Coquitlam already ran their own fibre network (QNet) so we are able to provide our service just about all over Coquitlam. New West is currently doing the same. Surrey is another possibility. http://www.newwestcity.ca/2015/02/03...initiative.php |

Also, if he wants to upgrade to a higher speed in the future he can without having a tech come over to upgrade anything. On Shaw 15 ($63/month) http://www.speedtest.net/result/5301411348.png |

I cannot wait until you expand to more buildings in Metrotown. I am all cabled for you to arrive at any time and on your waiting list. Will also try to do some promoting with our building's Strata Manager, as our building is huge and likely most suites have cables ready (at least us in the upper floors do). Quote:
The sad thing here is that only Telus provides fibre optics internet service in our building, so I had to choose from their network plans, which only have speeds between 15-150 Mbps (same as their DSL offering). Technically they could do 1 Gbps if they wanted, but Telus being our own Comcast, refuses to offer anything competitive as long as there is no competition. It's the same as in the US, where Google Fibre coming to town makes Comcast and others introduce a similarly-priced 1 Gbps internet the very same day. They just wait until they have to do that. But since Telus' pricing is a joke, I went with one of the cheapest plans (and truth be told, I don't really need a faster internet). So yeah, it's a waste of the technology at this point and not really any different from having a DSL. :( |
i just got mine installed today, i did a test and it was 7kbps. lol
after hours on the phone finally someone said its still on order and should be functioning properly by midnight. why not just tell me that when you installed it instead of me wasting nearly 4 hours on various calls trying to ask whats going on. grrr. anyway raises the questions - there are 3 alternatives to telus and shaw, juce, lightspeed and another one something out of ontario which dispite their telephone automated voice saying its only in ontario and quebec does offer service to BC when you finally talk to a real person. So they offer slightly cheapre than the big two and give you unlimited data unlike the choke with telus etc. which is probably a good thing. Juce requires you to have shaw cable though, the other two use telus lines and they say if your telus is slow they won't be any better. anyway does anyone go with someone other than telus or shaw? what are some good options out there? specifically Vancouver ISland... |

I'm on bonded DSL. Nothing compared to one of my co-workers who has 1000/1000 fibre connection near SFU (and pays less than half of what I do).
http://www.speedtest.net/result/5313380807.png Only hope is the crappy Telus "fibre" being installed this summer, which will be artificially limited to 150 Mbps. A joke compared to rest of the 1st world IMO. |
Shaw is raising their rates again in August. Sigh

Does anybody know what Telus fibre pricing is like? Or if there are bandwidth limits?

Got hooked up with Novus gigabit internet today. I was pleasantly surprised to learn my new condo was wired with fibre to each suite.
Incredibly, this is a free 12 month promo with no catch. $129/month after that. My thought is I'll drop down to one of their more standard packages, but this is pretty amazing. http://www.speedtest.net/result/5626325336.png |

If you're in a Novus-connected building I don't blame you.

Changed our plan to the Shaw Internet 150 promo a week ago. $80 a month for two years but it is supposed to change to $130 a month after. |

Shaw has the 150Mbps at $50 for the first year, $80 for the second year deal again. I was paying way more for 60 and should have more $$$ in two years so I jumped on it. As a competitive online gamer it's a no brainer.
Edit: yowza, love the over-delivery http://i.imgur.com/z2P0hqQl.png |
I'm waiting for Telus to finish installing fiber on my half of the condo building.. zzzz. 150/150 soon for the same price.

Blast from the past.
I upgraded 2 months ago to 1GBit symmetrical from Novus in our building. Paying $112 per month with static IP, unlimited data download/upload. Don't have a speed test handy but my main computer gets around 970mbit up and 880mbit down on average. We don't have cable TV and just stream everything and I run a business. It was also cheaper technically than the Internet 300/30 service I had from them before. |
I had free gigabit from Novus for a year. It's pretty incredible, but I really couldn't take advantage of it. I downgraded to 100M (at $45/month + tax) which is still plenty for my needs, with multiple streaming feeds. Fiber to my suite means my latency is typically 1ms too which is nice. There's no comparison to Novus for pricing and service.
