Thanks for making this thread, was gonna do it myself this weekend.

I live super close by so I'll take lots of pics as this progresses.

Beedok Jun 20, 2014 7:08 PM

Very nice. Hamilton is turning into a serious hospital town.

Dr Awesomesauce Jun 20, 2014 8:52 PM

Little do Autistic kids know they're creating jobs right here in Hamilton. Cheers, kiddies.

You don't know how right you are. I'm a software developer, and I know of two companies (both in the Hamilton area) that make apps and games for autistic kids.

ScreamingViking Jun 21, 2014 4:54 PM

That's quite a health care campus that's been developing around the General.

Zmonkey Jun 23, 2014 1:19 AM

Wow had no idea this was even being built.

What's the timeline on this, and anyone know what employment numbers will look like when up and running?

davidcappi Jun 23, 2014 1:26 AM

I like the design.

It opens near the end of 2015.

This new facility will be a real step up from the current hodge podge of buildings and services over at Chedoke. In talking with staff at Chedoke, there seems to be a real sense of excitement in moving to the new building.

matt602 Jun 23, 2014 9:11 PM

A sense of excitement to move North of Barton street by the tracks? Man, Hamilton has turned a corner :P

Well, perhaps not the location per se, but for the new facilities! :) Hopefully, it will complement the other medical services developing around the General campus to create a new institutional/commercial hub on Barton.

Still wish that Mac built this on the Chedoke site, but now wonder what the end game is for the west mountain hospital since there will be fewer services offered there by the time this building is complete and a lot of the facilities there are in disrepair. Are they looking to sell the land for more subdivisions? Last parcel they sold still hasn't been developed--think it has gone to the OMB now.

SteelTown Jun 24, 2014 4:28 PM

^ Yep, eventually all of Chedoke will be sold off. I say within a 10-20 years time frame.

Swanky new video that shows the entire project off extensively (via renders).

This is a pretty big building. I could easily spot it coming down the Jolley Cut

matt602 Sep 19, 2014 11:57 PM

I was looking up Wellington from Cannon the other day and it jumped out at me as well. Although it's not actually that tall, it jumps out because most of the rest of the buildings South of it are only 3-4 stories tall.

Dr Awesomesauce Sep 20, 2014 1:57 AM

Hopefully this healthcare-related development will continue to push north eating up all those brownfields towards Burlington St.

ScreamingViking Sep 20, 2014 2:33 AM

Those brownfields have a lot of potential as new business parks - maybe some bio-medical companies would see a benefit to locating near the hospital and health buildings.

Hopefully the redevelopment of the Studebaker factory land and the Siemens plant are just the beginning.

Dr Awesomesauce Sep 20, 2014 3:42 AM

I wonder who owns that land...

matt602 Sep 20, 2014 4:35 AM

I think I remember reading that the developer of the Studebaker land is indeed targeting the healthcare industry. It'll be down to them to market it properly.

Amazed at how quickly this went up. I wonder if Mac's other downtown campus will pop up this quickly. Guess it depends on if the money is there

Hamilton rejects rezoning for hospital parking in Beasley

Not the most cheerful looking building.

matt602 May 5, 2015 11:14 PM

It definitely has that industrial influence to it...

interr0bangr May 6, 2015 1:53 PM

It's not done yet people. Will be red brick veneer once completed.

Okay, I was worried it would stay grey.

Here's a photo from today, you can see the red brick being installed under the scaffolding on the left:

What the finished product should look like.

davidcappi May 6, 2015 5:08 PM

It'll be a nice building when it's finished. Now they just have to figure out their parking fiasco. A mixed use parking structure would do well down here, with retail frontage perhaps.

Wellington Street, just north of Barton

ScreamingViking Jul 19, 2015 5:44 PM

Time to remake Wellington into a 2-way street. It would really help create more direct access to this facility from the south (as well as to other potential brownfield redevelopments north of the hospital).

Victoria too. With the Studebaker plant land being remade into a business park, having better inbound access from Burlington St. would be good.

davidcappi Jul 20, 2015 11:01 AM

That area is bleak as fuck. The new building is nice and all, but I feel like General as it stands looks incredibly foreboding. The west and south walls are long brick windowless stretches until almost Victoria. I'm also curious if HHS has any plans to redevelop the one storey building just south of the new one. Plus there's an auto shop at the corner so... Yeah it's horrible, but hopefully this new building spurs some interest.

The rehab centre in behind the main general building isn't too bad.
