Lime Ridge Mall

I didn't see a Lime Ridge Mall thread and I needed one to post renovation updates. This thread can be used for anything that has to do with Lime Ridge Mall.

thmx Mar 20, 2013 11:54 PM

To start this thread, here is a photo update of the renovations taking place at Lime Ridge (photo taken today by me):

I haven't been to Limebingo Mall in forevs. Is that around back, then?

I won't start taking an interest in the mall until they begin filling in that massive sea of asphalt with some sort of mixed use development.

This is in the front. On the corner of the mall in the foreground is where Old Navy used to be. I never knew Old Navy wasn't there anymore until today.

The store is still there, the sign on the front is gone though.

It almost looks like they might be trying to bring some stores to the front there with windows and entries into them, but I'm not sure. It would be a bit of an awkward setup with that sea of parking out front...

They're doing the same at Eastgate Square. Shopper's Drug Mart, Shoe Warehouse, and Jack Astor's already have their own entrances from outside. The new Urban Planet and another new restaurant will also have the same kind of entrances at Eastgate.

Found this picture on the Lime Ridge Mall website. I searched for a bigger
image, but couldn't find one. You can see the new design a bit:

I am still trying to figure out when Limeridge Mall became suburban, it's closer to downtown than the Centre on Barton. It may be a suburban style mall, but it is in the city.

mattgrande Mar 21, 2013 11:44 AM

Yeah, I also noticed the thread about City Motor Hotel was in suburbs, but I'm pretty sure that's Old Hamilton.

urban_planner Mar 23, 2013 1:50 AM

Hi Guys
Having been there recently I can answer a few things! First that section where Old Navy Used to have an exterior wall is going to become a restaurant called spring rolls!

Also the shops that were located in the central pods such and Second Cup and Cinnabonn as well as things engraves etc are going to be removed or have already been removed to go back to the open air feel! The entrance by old nave where you enter will have a large stair case with customer service behind it!

I personally wish they would bring back the original layout with the t fountain pools etc!

I'll try to get an update soon. I was going to yesterday, but it was busy and I didn't think anyone was that interested in the project so I didn't bother, lol

palace1 Jun 27, 2013 2:08 AM

I haven't had a chance to try the food at Spring Rolls yet.

They have a takeout window into the mall but to dine in you have to enter the restaurant or patio from the outside.

The patio is long and narrow stretching along the parking lot. It's overhanged by a cantilevered section of the mall so it's not open to the sky. It looked claustrophobic and noisy with the cars driving right by.

Can anyone help me? Does anyone have old images of Limeridge mall from the early 90s or 80s? Or even when the mall opened. I know Hamilton Central library had some clippings on when the mall opened...but I really want to see some colour photos of the old mall.

I would love to rekindle those memories of the poo-brown tiles, and the large central fountains and the smaller ones at either end.

So many memories of the old movie theatre too...

urban_planner Jul 19, 2013 4:27 PM

I would also love to see that! I loved the original outline for the mall! I really loved it when they had the giant snow flakes down the middle with various christmas displays and all the tiny mirrors the spun shooting beams of light all over. I also loved the giant Iceburg Santa Display.

ScreamingViking Jul 21, 2013 8:48 PM

I was checking out Google's streetview of the mall and I realized that in the map view they display the floorplan of the lower level, with many of the store names. (I couldn't see if there was a way to show the upper level)

Looks like it's the only mall in the area that's been done so far - not even Square One or Yorkdale has been detailed yet.

Just thought it was cool.

arch100 Sep 3, 2013 5:57 PM

The new 'Anchor' tenant that the Shoppers and HMV (along with a few others) were relocated / closed for is a massive 2 storey Forever 21 with access directly to the exterior. Much bigger than the Mapleview location. It even has a small Men's dept. A number of other new stores are now open too. New Store list: http://www.limeridge.ca/en/directory...NewStores.aspx

Katrillion Jan 28, 2014 5:12 AM

Really wish they opened a Nordstrom or Zara here. I heard Nordstrom was looking at this mall as a potential location (because it is owned by Cadillac Fairview).

With the way Sears is selling leases back to Cadillac and Cambridge it may happen.
That Sears has been in a sorry state for years.

SteelTown Jan 28, 2014 4:40 PM

^ Highly doubt they'll sell that Sears unless Sears goes completely bankrupt.

Sears recently renovated the Limeridge location to the new format.

Mapleview is more likely to be sold than Limeridge.

The store was redone in 2012.

Sears Canada going completely bankrupt (or at least shutting down) isn't non-zero at this point.

drpgq Oct 4, 2017 12:20 AM

Well Sears Limeridge is definitely closing. A friend who works at the mall talked with the mall manager recently and according to him a Keg and movie theatre is coming.

I don't see how a cinema could make a return to Lime Ridge, and especially not in the existing Sears building.

That would need to be torn down with a new cinema built from the ground up.

And I don't know how, or if, Cineplex or Landmark could get in there, given the assets they own at the Meadowlands, Heritage Greene and Jackson Square respectively.

So I'd take that cinema concept as replacement for Sears as a grain of salt for now....The Keg, however, I could see going in there, even if there's one on Upper James....unless they want out of Upper James.

=P

SteelTown Oct 5, 2017 3:38 PM

Would love to see Simons come to Hamilton.

matt602 Oct 5, 2017 5:49 PM

I highly doubt a movie theatre is going in there. Makes absolutely no sense with 2 already on the mountain as it is.

King&James Oct 5, 2017 10:06 PM

I think a Simons would struggle, but a Winners Homesense indigo and a suite of sit down roadhouse places, Kelleys keg, Montanas, etc could carve up space nicely.

Simon's has scaled back there expansion plans, apparently there new stores outside of Quebec are not hitting the numbers they expected.

I really do think bix box appearal retail is fading, so unless its a discount like a winners, I expect these new Sears openings to be chopped up and made smaller retail store fronts.

.

Simons has been deliberately bucking the trend that points to a overall serious decline in the department store sector.

It's almost like walking a tightrope I am pretty sure.

They're still pretty solid but as you suspect they may be cooling their jets now.

Any big store that doesn't embrace online, is dead in my opinion. Very little can survive against amazon and walmart. I ALL of my shopping at Dollarama, Walmart and Amazon

matt602 Dec 12, 2017 9:56 PM

I don't even think I've ever seen one of those cars driving around before. I have no idea who they think is going to use those things.

SteelTown Dec 12, 2017 10:41 PM

I've seen a few, mostly on the Mountain, Ancaster and at McMaster.

Hawrylyshyn Dec 12, 2017 10:46 PM

Do they just charge Teslas though, or can you charge any electric vehicle (other brands) at them?

Just Teslas at the moment.

Tweets from @Mattatthespec about the city allowing housing to be built at malls

"We're talking about this motion now. Basically, it a motion to encourage malls to pursue residential projects, since #HamOnt has already changed the rules to allow it."

"Latest release from @FredEisenberger re: new housing at malls. Looks aimed at growing concerns about what online shopping is doing to Lime Ridge Mall, ie biggest taxpayer in #HamOnt"

I've long thought putting up apartments on some of the Limeridge parking lots would be a great idea. No well organized Durand or Corktown neighbourhood associations to deal with, although some Mountain residents can be even crazier.

NortheastWind Apr 19, 2018 4:38 PM

Cadillac Fairview owns the property next to Jiffy Lube, where McDonalds use to be. A good spot for a condo.

LRTfan Apr 19, 2018 7:00 PM

I love Hamilton city hall actually thinks this is somehow a groundbreaking idea. lol...it's been happening for decades in North America

Don't get me wrong, it's a great idea. But like most good ideas, we're decades late.

JoeyColeman Apr 19, 2018 7:25 PM

Already Happening

Lime Ridge Mall publicly submitted their intent to redevelop in October, and received site specific permissions to do mixed-use. (This is tied up as part of the OPA 69 appeal at the OMB)

Eastgate Square publicly submitted their intent during the Centennial Secondary Plan process. Their permissions are officially tied up as part of an appeal of this Secondary Plan, but that appeal is about a Starbucks Drive-Thru at Nash & Queenston and should be settled in the near future)

Mountain Plaza Mall has already submitted a planning application for two six storey residential buildings as Phase I of their redevelopment.
(Note: the file was in the initial staff comments phase when I pulled it in Feb, and I'm planning to pull it mid-May when more details are available)

Mayor Eisenberger was recently briefed that all of this was happening, and moved his motion to get ahead of the credit for what is already happening.

davidcappi Apr 19, 2018 7:30 PM

CF & RioCan seem to be doing this to a lot of their mall properties. Good on them for reworking the sites! I saw a similar proposal for the Galleria Mall in Toronto which is looking to build some mid rise buildings and a tower in the parking lot of the mall, as well as a renovations to the mall to help add more entrances connecting it better to the new development.

Can't wait to see what they have in store! This area is ripe for some intensification.

LRTfan Apr 20, 2018 2:56 AM

giant mall properties, way far away from single family homes would be ideal spots for mid rise and high-rise development. We could add a lot of units on these massive sites.
But it's Hamilton...the anti-development, pro-stagnation capital of Canada. A few entitled home-owners will whine and cry and their councillors will make sure nothing over 6 or 8 stories is built.

You do realize that every single mall and major shopping plaza in the city of Hamilton except for Jackson Square is surrounded by single family homes.

This is Sherway Gardens in. Toronto. Note the 4 highrises, built over the last 5 years. Many people in modern cities have no problems with density, and like being close to shopping and transit. Except in Hamilton. https://goo.gl/maps/y4dSjNUwFjM2
