Cool buildings with high-tech media screens

I am interested in finding some of the latest and greatest designs of buildings with screens or images or animated video media screen walls. I'm not exactly sure what I'm looking for. I am designing a project with an exterior wall that will have the ability to play movie trailers on it. I'm not sure what technology exists out there, other than some sort of projection system. I saw a building in the new James Bond movie that showed a very new and tall highrise in Shanghai that had animated graphics on a transparent exterior wall. It looked like it was an actual building and not some fake CG movie stuff, and that the animated graphics were on glass.

This article is pretty neat. Asia's big cities are lousy with LED screens.

I don't believe that the building you mentioned from Skyfall is real. It seems that the scene was filmed in a skyscraper in London.

Was it Aurora Plaza in Shanghai?

Thanks for the info Volgus & Three Hundred. I'm quite sure that the Aurora building is not the one shown in the movie. But, I did not know that it had a display like that. If anybody else has something to contribute to this thread, please post on here.

This one in Dubai seems very interesting. Thanks Volgus.

The new Wilshire Grand Tower in Los Angeles has always been planned with display abilities on its facade. The design of the building changed pretty dramatically recently, but the architect still says it will have "programmable LED lighting" in the entire skin and spire of the building. I think this is just a nice way of saying it can show images and potentially advertisements. And I welcome this!

I don't think a large building digital screen needs to be the same stuff you'd see in say signage or a jumbo-tron, concert back drop etc.

I've noticed for the past four years, the Detroit International Auto show has used lighter density arrays of LED's for huge wall signage. Viewed from far away, they still look very high res. The biggest benefits being that you can put them behind glass and your tenants can still have a view outside.

I'll see if I can find that info for you.

The Dallas Omni isn't a screen but it has a pretty intense light show.

This example isn't on a building, but it is currently the world's largest LED dispaly screen:

Apparently, this is the largest LED display screen on a building, and Photovoltaic solar panels are integrated with LED color lights as one curtain wall system.

The earlier mentioned scene from Skyfall. The movie had an incredible night time flyover of Shanghai right before this scene.

Is that a "Pan Am" sign in the back?

Also, does the massive LED screen in the lobby of Comcast Center count?

Thank you for digging that up. Yes, this is what I was referring to! And, my big question is DOES THAT REALLY EXIST OR ARE ALL THOSE ANIMATED IMAGES ON CLEAR GLASS JUST A COMPUTER GRAPHIC ENHANCEMENT IN THE FILM?

The animations on the clear glass appear to be reflections from the LED screen from the building across the street. I know they're filming with cameras with filters the exaggerate the blue light. I'm pretty sure they're projecting images on to the glass in real life, as well as images being projected on later with CGI.

If you're asking are LED screens clear in real life? I'm never personally seen one up close so I couldn't tell you for sure. I'd think they would be just because you wouldn't want to block the view of one side of the building.

Tokyo (Shibuya, Shinjuku, Ginza) and Shanghai (Lujiazui, in Pudong) are the best I have ever personally witnessed. Completely in a league of their own.

This is probably the best example I've seen yet. A large LED and steel wire mesh temporary construction facade in Plaza Duomo in Milan, Italy. You can see images clearly during the daytime, and you can see through the mesh.
