175 Robson | 62.6M | 19Fl | Completed
I thought I would start a separate thread for this.
The hotel operator is still being worked out, it could be a Hilton or another of their brands. It'll contain 106 condo units on the upper floors and 75 hotel suites below plus 6 CRUs above 3 levels of underground parking. It's scheduled to open in the summer of 2013 and the working title for the project currently (subject to change) is the Crystal Blu Hotel & Residences. It takes it's name from the backlit blue mechanical screening on top. Aside from some minor tweaking this is essentially what it'll look like. http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f5...1/P1040443.jpg http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f5...1/P1040445.jpg http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f5...1/P1040442.jpg http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f5...1/P1040446.jpg http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f5...1/P1040440.jpg http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f5...1/P1040439.jpg http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f5...1/P1040437.jpg all pix by Built Form |
I like it. although Im hoping that thats brick going up the building and not painted concrete.
wonder how long the light element on the roof will last... |
Thanks for the pics. Doesn't look as bad as the previous rendering suggested.
|
Looks like painted concrete to me, judging from the typical double-reveal between floors. Gotta love our pomo piles...
some of the detailing is reminiscent of the Laguna project near Stanley park, though the quality here is likely far worse. Which is a shame. |
wow, thanks for posting! vastly superior to what the renders suggested, this could be a very nice addition to the area there.
|
Sooooooo much better than the last one. Looks pretty damn good actually.
|
Simple, a hint of art deco step backs and very Vancouver in style. Nothing to write home about, but a good infill.
|
I like it too.
The roof looks particularly nicely capped with the canopy and the lighting. The column caps on the podium look dated - they are used on the 819 and Galileo up the street - but may indicate that the podium (if not teh tower) will be faced in brick (although the caps also appear at the tower setbacks) Not keen on the "stacked" Hilton logo - would look better as a linear form with the logo to the left of the wording (that would also allow the wording to be larger) |
I like it better than the previous render with the multicoloured crown, but I'm still not a huge fan of the tower portion.
The podium actually looks pretty good though, which should be the main concern on this site bordering Robson. Ideally the retail mix is a hit and it helps cognitively extend the Robson mall. |

Can't say I'm a fan of pomo/faux-heritage facades. The one thing I like is that projecting element over the entrance with the patterned glass/mullion. If only that language defined the tower, instead of being orphaned as a little decourative piece on a vancouver special. Like, seriously, where have we not seen the punched window grid on window-wall combo...
|
It'll be a Hilton. Mayfair (the developer) has been holding on to the rights for a Hilton franchisee for Vancouver for ages. They have the Hampton already for the lower end and they desperately need a Hilton flag to compete with Starwood and Marriott.

Another excavation pic from the coworker today:

totally agreed |
Where is this located? It's on the end of Robson closer to the stadium right?
|
^North east corner of Robson and Cambie.
|
I love how this is considered infill, when that whole area is practically infill.

Well, it's probably faster to load up google/bing/whatever maps, type in "175 Robson Street", and get your answer than waiting for a forum answer.
But the answer is yes, it's near BC place, and is on the intersection of Cambie and Robson. |

When I right click I also have a "Map with Livesearch" option that takes you to a Bing map.
|
Pic by coworker today. I walked by the site and it looks to be excavated to about a metre below grade so far.

Interestingly I noticed today that 177 Robson st (must be the same project) has a meeting at the DPB on Mach 5, 2012. Somewhat strange to see a project head to the DPB after they've started digging.
|
Could be a typo for 1277 Robson.
|
Could be and would make more sense.
|
^ I'm still confused by this - the City's list of upcoming major development applications refers to 1177 Robson Street (even though the DPB info page still refers to 177 Robson) - 1177 Robson Street is the north-east corner of Robson and Bute or thereabouts (Google map: http://g.co/maps/hsu5e).
The application is for a "new 20-storey hotel and residential building with commercial on the ground floor and hotel rooms on the second to fourth floors" by Relative Form, which appears to be a West Van architecture firm. Anyone know anything about this one? |
That is strange - I wouldn't expect any new highrises would be allowed on Robson itself. I could see them taking down a Pacific Palisades tower and building a new one in its place at 1277 Robson (even if not on Robson itself). But 1177 Robson is a large enough site (London Drugs and earls) to allow for a tower.
EDIT: It probably is the Hilton site at 177 Robson, although hotel units on 2nd to 4th floors? 2nd to 14th maybe? Relative Form is the architect for the Hilton Hotel project: http://aibc.memberpro.net/main/body....&table_id=1067 |
^ Ah, that most likely explains it, even if it seems like a late application.
BTW, is there a formal City policy limiting heights/stories on the north side of Robson on the core shopping blocks? |

Maybe the application is to reduce the hotel component to just 3 floors (2nd-4th??) Pic from co-worker: http://img843.imageshack.us/img843/5...1120600005.jpg Uploaded with ImageShack.us |

so 3 floors of hotel, that seems kinda dinky for a hilton
|
Excavation continuing, one level of shotcrete done.

and another hoarding going up...
|
Thanks for the update. They seem to be excavating quickly.

Some good hoarding going up.
|
So it appears the site does have a development permit in hand issued on the old plans but is looking to apply for a new permit to change things to allow for less hotel and more hotel, it appears height will remain the same, density increases slightly, but it'll actually lose one floor as the floors will each be taller (a reverse of current trends). Anyways all the answers can be found here.

Thanks for the photo, Jimbo604.
Good to see this one making progress. |
agreed... not a huge fan of the building but its satisfying seeing that huge parking lot gone.

Crane should go up next Wednesday.
|
Crane went up...as predicted at 175 Robson Street
I watched the Crane go up at 175 Robson today.
Does this mean the building status now changes from 'Proposed' to 'Under Construction'? |
