Alex Decoteau Park - 105st / 102ave

I thought some of you might be interested to know that the City purchased 'the Scott property' a couple of years ago and we (the downtown community league et al) have started working on some initial planning and ideas for the site. This is very exciting and could make that corner a new destination for the community and downtown workers.

Please post some thoughts as to what you might like to see there or pictures that illustrate the same.

What do you want to see, what should be incorporated, what could be?

Also, please make it known that this is needed, that the City should commit funds to THIS site, and that downtown NEEDS more greenspace.

Personally I am a huge fan of Emery Barnes park on the edge of yaletown in Vancouver.

Make sure there is a playground for kids to play.

Coldrsx Oct 1, 2010 1:29 AM

really

or should there be open areas for kids to play...

This is a very urban location, perhaps we need to rethink play ground.

Harrison Oct 1, 2010 1:35 AM

...or an "urban playground", for parkour of course!

Coldrsx Oct 1, 2010 1:37 AM

hahaha... a parkour course.

CMD UW Oct 1, 2010 3:38 AM

Yes, open space that can be used for passive recreation and an off-leash area are two important components. This park must have a delicate balance between hard and soft landscaping.

itom 987 Oct 1, 2010 5:25 AM

If downtown is going to compete against the suburbs for families then something of equal or greater value has to be in place. Parks are like advertisements in a newspaper - they sell. Keep it simple or it will get lost in translation.

SpongeG Oct 1, 2010 8:47 AM

the extension in emery barnes in vancouver - most of it is now open - just one last bit to be demolished and done

anyway - prior to this extension being open the park - phase 1 was nice but a lot of sketchy types kinda made you not feel welcome there - but since the second part opened and the dog park and children's playground have come in the park is now full of families and dog people and the sketchy types seem to be less daunting - its a really great park and a nice spot to stop by in

there is also yaletown park which isn't very welconming with its choice of non-grass ground covering... and is usually empty

An off leash area would be awesome. Having lived in a loft near the proposed park, it really sucked for my dog as there is a real lack of green-space in that part of town.

Coldrsx Oct 1, 2010 9:08 PM

Obviously only about 3mins of work, but this is what i would more or less like to see...

-Water fountain with seating around it
-slightly raised "stage"
-low hedging with seating along the concrete curves
-off leash fenced area at back

Coldrsx Oct 18, 2010 4:59 PM

^working title... family who sold the property to the City.

SpongeG Oct 23, 2010 10:43 AM

i've been there - portland's pearl district has some great parks

Drynagolt Sep 23, 2011 3:11 AM

Any updates on this park?

Coldrsx Sep 23, 2011 3:12 AM

Rezoning this fall. Budget ask for 2012. Design work in spring. Sign to be on site this fall.

Coldrsx Mar 28, 2013 3:12 AM

DECL will be hosting another steering committee meeting in April, if you would like to get involved or provide support, please PM m.

Coldrsx Apr 26, 2013 2:31 AM

$2,000,000.00 line item in the phase 1 funding of the CRL, alright!!!

ccw219 May 16, 2013 10:01 AM

^I'm late on this one, but just as excited as you are Cold! With all of this over-the-top excitement about mega-projects, let's get back to basics.

Am I the only one who gets just as excited about streetscapes and parks? This is what we use.

Coldrsx May 16, 2013 3:13 PM

^exactly... and why we supported the arena, ie. it will help facilitate and accelerate new projects such as this.

ccw219 May 17, 2013 11:54 AM

^Yeah, I'm starting to believe that. That's the funny thing about the arena debate (at least the rational one). What is our ability to finance without sacrificing other priorities? Now here we are talking about accelerating those priorities instead of cutting them!

Good to see some infectious optimism out there.

Kevin_foster May 22, 2013 7:37 PM

Call it Mandel Park :)

Coldrsx May 22, 2013 7:39 PM

^naming committee will likely be involved yes.

rapid_business May 22, 2013 8:51 PM

Total estimated cost for full build out?

Coldrsx May 22, 2013 10:06 PM

^TBD... but we have a 2mil line item in the CRL. That should be close to bang on.

rapid_business May 23, 2013 2:43 PM

I thought initial estimates of full build out was something like $35m? Am I getting confused with something else?

240glt May 23, 2013 3:14 PM

$35M for a small PARK ? Yup, I'd say you've got your numbers mixed up

Coldrsx May 23, 2013 3:37 PM

2mil is for the Scott parcel on the NWC of 105st/102ave. Phase 1 of the larger 'planned' warehouse park... which is $46mil and much larger, but also a lot further off.

Ha, maybe if the park is on the roof top of a highrise building...$35 mil....

Excellent. I was confused by this as well. I knew that there was talk of a larger central park but thought that the 46 was for this smaller parcel. (Shows what I know about costs...) :)

So would this 105 St park be folded into the larger piece or mostly separate? And not trying to derail but what land parcel are we looking at for the larger?

Coldrsx May 24, 2013 5:01 PM

Scott park = yellow, future central park = red

Black Star May 24, 2013 5:58 PM

Healy lands gonna be a park!!! Realllly!

Hallsy's Toupee May 24, 2013 6:37 PM

Doesn't that mean the Healy lands would need to be purchased from the landowner who's been happily collecting parking revenue for a couple of decades?

Coldrsx May 24, 2013 6:41 PM

yes, significant land acquisition will be required... hence the cost and longer timelines... whereas the Scott Brothers property is owned by the city and essentially ready to go.

s4.audios May 25, 2013 2:14 PM

This future central park better be one amazing park to take up such a prime location.

This park will be a central component to making the Warehouse District a truly livable, family-oriented urban neighbourhood. This is a long term plan that will see density rights given to land owners who work with administration towards achieving this important objective. Much like how the water front along Coal Harbour serves as today, this is long term thinking and something we won't see happen for a number of years. But maybe, just maybe 20 years from now we'll have a great urban neighbourhood that caters to all demographics - singles, families, empty-nesters, and seniors.

Hallsy's Toupee May 25, 2013 4:54 PM

I'd be glad of the land acquisition by the city, period. If the park plans fall through, they can flip the land to those who are willing to turn those dusty parking lots into some highrises.

ccw219 May 25, 2013 5:55 PM

Oh, I like! I was thinking it was this plot but it can be hard to differentiate rumor from fact on these boards at times. Good to see and very needed!

Thanks Cold.

Coldrsx May 28, 2013 11:42 PM

What the central park might want to look like, Chicago.

Rezoning from UW to AP with SD support on September 22!!!

Coldrsx Sep 23, 2014 3:03 AM

I am not sure if a fountain would work so well in Edmonton. Maybe an exhibitor/artist circle? Where local artists can display their art in the middle and we could have ice sculptures in the winter as well.

Who is the park for? I sure hope not a street market...the park is for residents and broader public to ensure. we don't need "retail" space no matter how well intentioned.

Every city in Canada has fountains, including Edmonton (City Hall, Legislature). No offense but I wish people would dispense with this mindset that we can't have nice things because we're the only city in Canada that has winter.
