pedestrian bridges
Is there already a thread just for cool pedestrian bridges? (does there need to be one?)

Calgary's other new forthcoming pedestrian bridge. The St. Patrick's Island Bridge:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v311/joshwhit/RFR.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...hwhit/RFR2.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...hwhit/RFR3.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...hwhit/RFR4.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...hwhit/RFR6.jpg All from here. The landing in the middle is the namesake St. Patrick's Island. This design was chosen in a design competition that had 33 entries, 3 were shortlisted. The renderings above are preliminary, and there will be a more detailed design forthcoming. Construciton will tentatively start in spring 2011. ------------ Here's a video of the Peace Bridge (from the first post of this thread) that was released by Santiago Calatrava and the City of Calgary: Construction began a couple months ago, and it will be completed by fall 2010. |
The St. Patrick's Island Bridge is really nice

It would indeed look far better with that "ramp stub" extended across the street. Right now, it just looks odd.

Can't find a good picture, but there is a recent pedestrian bridge connecting both sides of Detroit's Mexicantown that spans I-75 on the city's southwest side:

maybe it wasn't such a bad idea to start this thread. there are some cool footbridges out there. here's a rendering of another one:
http://www.archdaily.com/wp-content/...1-1000x540.jpg http://www.archdaily.com/wp-content/...1-1000x540.jpg http://www.archdaily.com/wp-content/...2-1000x628.jpg http://www.archdaily.com/55957/footb...farzin-studio/ |
That last one is stunning! I really hope it turns out like the renderings. It appears as if it's just hovering on the surface of the water. And the stairs down to the waters edge is genius.

I know it's already been posted, but I love the millenium bridge in London (my pictures).

Denver's 16th Street Pedestrian Mall has been extended over the last decade, past Union Station, over the Consolidated Mainline Railroad tracks to the Central Platte Valley (with Millennium Bridge). Then over the South Platte River (with the Platte River Bridge) and finally over I-25 to the Highlands neighborhood (with the The Highland Bridge). This series of three pedestrian bridges all contribute significantly to the architecture and connectivity of the area:

Three pedestrian bridges link downtown Denver, Colorado with the Highland neighborhood. This photo was taken from the east end of the Highland Bridge, spanning I-25. In the mid-ground is the Platte River Bridge and Commons Park, and in the background is the Denver Millennium Bridge which crosses the railroad tracks and empties onto the 16th Street Mall.

I'm not sure if these count as cool bridges, but I thought it was a cool lifestyle that pedestrian bridges are necessarily a part of. South of Bangkok, right on the coast of the Gulf of Siam is a community called Bang Khuntein. There are no roads for automobiles in Bang Khuntien, everything is moved by boat along the canals or along the pedestrian paths. The bridges aren't particularly ornate, but I think they count as cool anyway because they are the only way to move through the area without a boat. At some of the canal intersections there is a bridge across each of the 4 directions, like crosswalks at a road intersection. (My pictures)

In Salt Lake, the Eccles Olympic legacy bridge connects student housing and the Fort Douglas area to the rest of the U of Utah campus. I've always thought it was pretty neat, but after seeing the rest of the stuff you guys have posted, its not that outstanding looking in comparison. Here it is anyway:

America. It was constructed over an existing dam on the Arkansas River and lights up and night. We walked across it while visiting family in AR a few years back and it was a pretty cool experience. The Old Salem Timber Pedestrian Bridge in Winston-Salem, N.C.
Built through a partnership between Old Salem, the North Carolina Department of Transportation and the City of Winston-Salem. The bridge reflects the unique culture and historic character of Winston-Salem. The award winning bridge is a 120-foot modified Burr-arch truss bridge designed by David Fischetti and built using skilled craftsmen utilizing 19th century building techniques. The timbers used are reclaimed from a demolished fertilizer plant in Chesapeake, the 1886 Champion Paper Mill in Canton and 260 year-old timbers pulled from the cotton docks of Savannah Harbor. A Burr-arch truss was a bridge Moravian settlers would have built in the early 1800s as Winston-Salem grew. Burr-arch trussed bridges were built near other Moravian cities in Pennsylvania. Theodore Burr (1771-1822) obtained a patent for this bridge style in 1817. The first Burr-arch bridge was built across the Hudson River in New York in 1804. The Old Salem Timber Pedestrian Bridge was built in December 1998 at a cost of $1,950,910. http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3456/...d90_z.jpg?zz=1 Source It connects a visitor center designed by architect Robert Venturi to the Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts and the Old Salem National Landmark District (Winston-Salem's lower downtown), developed in the mid-1700s. The steps and ramps connect to the Winston-Salem Pedestrian Walkway System of bike and walking paths on the Visitor's Center side. http://farm1.static.flickr.com/48/14...a3a_z.jpg?zz=1 Source Lights inside the bridge. http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3455/...e0d7d0b8_b.jpg Source http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1005/...f7b49972_b.jpg Source http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5084/...5234847b_b.jpg Source Other fun pedestrian bridges in Winston-Salem: http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2779/...8a6_z.jpg?zz=1 Source Lake Kathryn Waterfall Bridge, designed by architect Charles Barton Keen and built in 1914 (National Register of Historic Places) http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2093/...620_z.jpg?zz=1 Source Salem Waterway Bridge at the Gateway YWCA (A 2007 construction photo) |

I've been on that bridge... it's railfan central, packed with balding bespectacled men carrying huge cameras.
It's a cool bridge, and I love the re-use of an older structure, but the fact that one end is in a private building is a point against it, since you can't use the bridge outside of Union Station's operating hours. |
Two more nice ones in the greater Phoenix area:
