Canada Place Revitalization

Quote:

Popular tourist destination could be getting a facelift

By BRUCE CONSTANTINEAU, Vancouver Sun
May 19, 2009

The future of the Imax theatre at Canada Place — which debuted 23 years ago at Expo 86 — appears uncertain as officials look to redevelop the popular tourist destination.

Canada Place Corp. has issued a request for proposals to revamp the 30,000 to 40,000 square feet of space that includes the 440-seat theatre with five-storey-high screens and a waterfront observation deck.

Canada Place representative Robyn McVicker said Tuesday the facility is in the midst of a “major revitalization” as it strives to complement the new Vancouver Convention Centre expansion.

“We’re looking to turn the theatre and observation deck into a new exciting visitor experience — what we’re calling the premier Canadian experience,” she said. “We want a partner that can create a long-term situation and invest in the future of this premier Canadian destination.”

McVicker said Canada Place is open to any suggestions, and possible options include a restaurant, a community theatre/arts facility, a first nations exhibit or a “Cirque du Soleil” place.

“There are limitless opportunities and we want something that really aligns with our brand,” she said.

Imax executive vice-president Mark Welton said the Canadian-based large-format cinema chain hasn’t yet decided if it will submit a development proposal.

The company’s long-term lease at Canada Place expired two years ago and it leases the space on a monthly basis.

“I plan on going out soon to learn their long-term plans and see if it makes sense for us to continue our partnership with Canada Place,” he said from from Mississauga, Ont.

Imax operates 371 theatres in 43 countries, but Welton noted the Canada Place theatre was the company’s first 3-D theatre in the world.

“It has been a flagship location for us and Canada Place has been a good partner,” he said. “If it makes economic sense and we can share the experience with the people in Vancouver, there’s probably a good opportunity for us.”

They should make an attraction similar OzTrek at the Sydney tower. Australia is a huge country and most tourist don't go beyond New South Wales. This interactive media adventure give visitors an over view of the whole country. I did it last year when I was in Australia and it was really cool.

johnjimbc May 20, 2009 5:07 PM

This sounds really promising. I'm impressed with the idea.

The idea of a BC "OzTrek" production showing in a new Imax - at least part of the time - would be great as well.

Jonovision May 20, 2009 8:46 PM

I really like the idea of Cirque Du Soleil setting up shop there. It would be a really great location. And it would be interesting to see what kind of show they would come up with for Vancouver.

Agreed, a space for any kind of high-quality alternative performance theatre would be great. This area is owed an arts facility, since the land planned for the Coal Harbour Arts Centre was 'expropriated' of sorts, for the expanded VCEC, if you remember. Perhaps the city would plough some of the money set aside for that into improving and expanding this facility, even to help with programming costs?

ah no more IMAX for downtown a real loss now that so many movies are also coming in an IMAX version and/or 3D IMAX

Doesn't actually play any Hollywood movies that people might want to watch, though.

Have to go all the way out to Richmond for that.

Might be why it's going away, actually...!

SpongeG May 20, 2009 11:16 PM

they played some - i know my friend saw something there once - its extremely rare though - i think it was batman he saw there

djh May 21, 2009 2:24 AM

Isn't the star screen in the HR Macmillan Centre an IMAX? If they started showing big Hollywood films there, they might actually have some customers.

Yume-sama May 21, 2009 2:25 AM

Hmm, if they played Batman it wasn't when it first opened. It seems a bit pointless to have an IMAX theater that doesn't play mainstream IMAX movies.

The only IMAX I'm aware of near Vancouver that does is SilverCity Riverport
http://www.google.com/maps?f=q&sourc...h&z=11&iwloc=B

That's where I had to go to see the Dark Knight :P

SpongeG May 21, 2009 2:40 AM

Langley has IMAX too - I go there - going on Friday to see Night At The Museum

Whalleyboy May 21, 2009 4:12 AM

i feel ripped off i went to the imax website and they show star trek...i go to see whats playing and langley the only thing i could find was a siting saying its the aliens vs monsters movie

mr.x May 21, 2009 4:33 AM

Personally, I'd love to have both IMAX and Cirque....it's a shame the expansion to Canada Place's cruise ship facilities were occupied with office (presumably for the port?).

As much as I'd love to see the Cirque, I love the IMAX as well.

But the Port only took the space because they couldn't find a tenant for the space! It sat empty for quite some time.

I had the same experience here in Calgary. The local IMAX theatre at Chinook Centre that typically plays all of the blockbuster movies (Harry Potter, Dark Knight) isn't playing Star Trek for some reason, even though IMAX theatres in the U.S. are.

Whenever I've gone to the IMAX theatre at Canada Place it's always been fairly busy, so I don't know if the threatre is struggling financially or not. Where else can you go to see a 3D movie these days?

NetMapel May 21, 2009 8:10 PM

Yeah I've been looking into Star Trek showing on IMAX but no dice in our two local IMAX. Why aren't BC's IMAX playing the heavy-special effects Star Trek when every IMAX in the US are !?

jlousa May 22, 2009 5:46 AM

There aren't enough prints of the film to go around.

SpongeG May 22, 2009 6:02 AM

they got them in ontario

maybe it will come here later

they played batman 2 for months after the regular release at the IMAX in langley

There seemed to be enough to prints for Dark Knight and Harry Potter.

:(

It will probably just take a while.

Jonovision May 22, 2009 1:08 PM

We have had all the big blockbusters in Imax here in Halifax. I just saw Star Trek.

mr.x May 22, 2009 2:41 PM

Don't know about the east side, but on the west side they've added massive "CANADA PLACE" print on the side of the building.

twoNeurons May 22, 2009 4:08 PM

This could be posturing to ensure the space is filled. They want a long-term tenant and IMAX hasn't decided yet. The chance of losing the space will get them moving on a decision.

I think Canada Place just wants to be sure something will be there.

when you look at the link above and see what other IMAX theaters are out there it really shows how sad ours really is.

and another smoking IMAX >> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:BF...X_at_night.jpg

mr.x May 31, 2009 5:00 AM

^ well, in all fairness ours is over 20 years old....and it's a shame they don't show new films. That place would have been a buzz if they had shown The Dark Knight last year.

SpongeG May 31, 2009 7:10 AM

they did show it - my friend saw it at canada place - i think it might have been a one time deal or something - it was long after opening weekend though

if you look they occasionally play movies other than nature films

Vancity May 31, 2009 8:38 AM

That London IMAX is AMAZING. we need an IMAX architecture like that. WOW. That is simply amazing.

DKaz Sep 2, 2009 11:29 PM

I've been working on this project for the past few months and there is just a week before it is reopened. There is quite a bit of work to do but they're hopeful it'll be done this long weekend, every contractor will be doing absolute overtime to get it done.

It looks incredible! Not new expansion incredible obviously, but it's more than what i had expected.

lol, the colours actually remind me of the airport terminal.

great pics thanks :)

johnjimbc Sep 2, 2009 11:48 PM

I had a hard time interpreting the photo, but is it possible the one you asked about is a new entry to the walkway that connects Canada Place to the new Convention Centre?

mr.x Sep 2, 2009 11:51 PM

^ yup, that's the expansion entrance.

DKaz Sep 2, 2009 11:52 PM

That makes sense!! The escalators in the new convention centre that connects to Canada Place is blocked off right now. Duh! I was going through architectural plans of the floor below and couldn't for the life of me why it turned west. lol.

Thanks!

Is there an artist that did the feature floor? that looks stunning....

Those escalators also go to Waterfront Cnetre - so the connection to the new convention centre expansion must branch off the old passage.

lol the new floors around the concourse are black/grey marble tile, haha. I think next week when they have the open house/grand opening (Premier Gordon Campbell will be there) they'll likely announce who was involved with the totem poles and floors. Construction workers other than those who installed the feature floors were strongly advised not to step on the feature floor or face consequences... not that it's fragile or anything but there were a quite a bit of finishes being damage unintentionally and this floor unlike everything else was one of a kind and cannot be easily replaced. Same with the totem pole.

There are two separate escalators/stairs going down... one to the east that goes to Waterfront Centre, and these ones to the west that'll connect to the new convention centre.

They are doing some work but I haven't been outside as it wasn't part of my scope of work.

paradigm4 Sep 4, 2009 7:49 PM

WOW! This is quite a stunning reno! It's amazing how you can transform a space with some simple updates. I love that floor - it's spectacular! Canada Place is certainly much more fit to be the brother of the expansion now.

is the pan pacific going to be doing any renos? or have they already, i havent been there in a few years.

More pictures from yesterday. Premier Gordon Campbell and delegates and media will be there this morning for the grand reopening, although there is quite a bit of work to do left. The grand lobby and concourse and part of the exhibition halls should be ready by now, construction workers were there overnight doing final cleanup and stuff. Watch for it on noon hour or evening news.

I know that each era (as in decade ;)) has its colours, but the sterile grey, aluminum, putty grey colours and whites of this renovation will in my view hold up much better than the mauvy pinks puked up all over everything in the 80s ;).

Seriously, though, there is a reason that trends tend to drift back towards more neutral or traditional colours over time. It's the time-specific trendiness at the ends of the arcs that grates over time.

It's easier to dress up a neutral colour with the trend of the day . . . adding orange or even some shades of blue or some shades of green accents to grey tones at some point in the future, for example. The main problem with the mauve explosion was that NOTHING actually went with it. It was an island onto itself as far as interior design options. Even natural wood didn't really fit with it.

That's the main reason I cringe when I see it. Any place that went whole hog on those colours in the 80s either is stamped with a period of time forever or has to basically pull it out and start over (as they just did at Canada Place).

Ending on a positive note, this renovation far exceeds any expectation I had. I think it looks awesome, and I'm so impressed with how it fits with the new convention centre wing. I love the integration of sophisticated woods in the design as well. It can't compete in that regard with the new centre, but they do a good job of bringing pieces of that look into the renovated space.

nova9 Sep 9, 2009 4:56 PM

I have no idea why I didn't realize this was happening. And I'm so wonderfully surprised!! It looks AMAZING!!

No more shiny, metal lines over pink squares.

What of the washrooms? (nevermind, I went back to page 2 and found them)

Sad about the IMAX though.
