Ribfest This Weekend

Burlington ribfest this weekend....YUMMMM

If you attend just be careful with the yellow jackets as they are at their peak this time of year. If I go I take a styrofoam cup and place it away from people and put soda pop in it. Seems to keep them away from the people. And don't sit near trash cans, they seem to like the cans too.

Mmmm delish!

I'll be sure to steer clear from that cursed pier, too!

MsMe Aug 26, 2008 5:18 PM

I wonder if they got that crane moved yet?

It would have costed more money but I don't know why didn't build a temp flatform to use for the machinery to use for the new pier. That probably would have cost less then fixing this mess up I bet.

DC83 Aug 26, 2008 5:47 PM

^^ b/c their contractor is no good. They have had nothing but problems with this project.
And no, they have a barge in place. I think they said it could take up-to a week to fix.

I have actually never been to Burlington RibFest. Has anyone gone? Is it worth going? Or is it just as annoyingly busy as the Sound of Music Festival?

MsMe Aug 26, 2008 6:09 PM

I went last year. I was able to attend on a Friday afternoon when it wasn't as busy but still had a hard time finding a parking spot. The ribs were good though. I might use the shuttle service if I go this year.

I heard there has been a lot of setbacks on this project.

MsMe Aug 27, 2008 2:49 PM

I heard they are back to trying to figure out a way of moving the crane. They couldn't use the barge to move it because of how the boom is sitting on the crane. What a mess eh.

raisethehammer Aug 27, 2008 6:13 PM

i'm sure they'll come crying to one of Hamilton's water barge companies to help them out.
As per usual, Burlington is nothing without Hamilton. Always has been. Always will be.

MsMe Aug 27, 2008 6:27 PM

Burlington is in Halton county, and I am surprised Hamilton didn't amiligimate Burlington with Hamilton a while ago. As you said they can't survive without us. Be interesting to see how they deal with this mess anyhow. What a bunch of no brainers eh.

raisethehammer Aug 27, 2008 6:35 PM

Burlington was thought to be annexed to Hamilton in the 60's, 70's but the province of the day decided to halt that plan with a longer term plan of annexing everything into TO someday.
Thankfully that didn't happen.

MsMe Aug 27, 2008 6:55 PM

Very true RTH. We pay enough property taxes already. I would like to move out of Hamilton, but having some major health issues this year, so not sure what my next move will be. I guess time will tell.

matt602 Aug 28, 2008 9:40 PM

My girlfriend wants to go to this, and I like ribs, so I guess I'm going.

MsMe Aug 28, 2008 9:52 PM

If you are able to attend on Friday afternoon there is a $3 off coupon on the website you can print out. The coupon is only good for Friday afternoon though.

Before I even opened this thread, I knew that it would have the usual anti-Burlington ranting by the usual suspects. The Burlington Ribfest is a fun summer festival, as is the Burlington Sound of Music festival, as is the Winona Peach Festival, as is the central Hamilton Festival of Friends, as is the downtown Hamilton Mustard Festival.

The fact that the Ribfest does not take place within Hamilton's boundaries does not invalidate it as a worthwhile event. There is really no need to take shots at Burlington every time the place is mentioned.

I'm just more of a country girl. I spent most of my childhood at Lake Erie and loved the peace and quiet. :) Always wished I could live there. Maybe in time.

matt602 Aug 29, 2008 3:12 AM

I was gonna say something about the "Burlington Bashing" but Ted put it better than I would have. Seriously guys, come on.

raisethehammer Aug 29, 2008 12:41 PM

no bashing here....facts are facts.
Let's see a Burlington EcDev advertisement that only touts their own institutions, culture, education and transportation strengths.
That'll be one short ad.

BrianE Aug 29, 2008 12:43 PM

I'm not seeing the anti-burlington rant... did it get deleted? I was hoping for a good cat fight this morning... meeoww

I think it was subtle, and not from the usual suspects. It was only bashing 'light'.

The city hired the contractors with the understanding the project had to be finished by May. They have been fining the contractors since the deadline. I think the no-brainers thing was directed towards the contractors?

I grew up in Burlington and think of the place as my hometown and fail to see any Burlington bashing here. Unfortunately, this is just another example of BC Ted trolling to get a rise out of people for his amusement..

there wasn't any Burlington bashing.

MsMe Aug 29, 2008 2:38 PM

Well whoever is trying to get the crane out of there is what I was talking about. Sad the pier didn't have a smooth sailing though and turned out the way it was supposed to. But accidents do happen. It should be nice when it's all done though whenever that will be. I can't wait to see it finished.

By the way, how long is this pier supposed to be?

Here is another guy that saw something in those words. I am not the only one "drinking the Kool-Aid", as a good online friend of mine likes to say.

Anyway, whatever. Earlier in the thread, someone asked if anyone had been to the event in the past. I have been there several times and have had a good time. It is pretty much what you might expect. I seem to remember that the ribs were a bit on the expensive side at most of the places, but tasty.

MsMe Aug 30, 2008 1:32 AM

The pier is going to be 132 m and with an S shape. Long pier it will be.

matt602 Sep 2, 2008 2:38 AM

I went on Saturday night, it was pretty good. I've never been, so the incredible amount of people and LONG lines was pretty annoying but well worth it. Best pulled pork sandwich ever. The prices were pretty damn steep as well. I was in for about $20 for that sandwich, lemonade and some funnel cake. I suppose that's to be expected though, as it was all quality.

I wish the HSR had bumped up service along the Parkdale during the event though. We ended up getting one of the last ones back to Hamilton and got stuck sitting on the QEW for 45 minutes because all Niagara bound traffic was being diverted across the lift bridge, which happened to be raised for a long time basically trapping ALL of the traffic from Toronto to Niagara Falls. Not fun.

Not only are you drinking the cool-aid but you're also mixing it..

matt602 Sep 2, 2008 3:06 AM

He spoke the truth. I don't know anything about ribs, but $20 for a full rack seems pricey to me.

MsMe Sep 2, 2008 3:14 AM

It's only a bit cheaper if you are able to go on Friday afternoon. Unfortunatly the coupon is only good for that day. I didn't go this year as I am still not feeling too great and money is tight this month.

raisethehammer Sep 2, 2008 3:34 AM

I did Mustard Fest 3 times, Labour Day parade and TiCat game....had a killer weekend.
