Sim City 4 -- Worth buying?

Hello all, I haven't played sim city in 3 years now (it was sim city 3000) and now I'm bored so I was thinking of purchasing sim city 4, but its expensive and I heard there's all these problems with the game. So is it worth buying at the end of the day or is it just a hassle or should I wait until the next sim city?

Patrick Feb 20, 2008 7:28 AM

I love Sim City 4.

The Goods:
- Its an amazing game! If you like Cities, you'll love this game. Zooming in, seeing the sims and cars move about, building new neighborhoods, watching what skyscraper will grow here and there.
- Impressive Graphics, very very good music. The music blends well with the game, good sound, very realalistic graphics.
- A HUGE fanbase, so much custom items like buildings/parks found on websites like Simtropolis. Plus easy to get feedback if your having issues with the game.
- 9/10

The Bads
- I ALWAYS CHEAT, so its hard I heard if you dont cheat (my two cheats, super demand cheat: makes cities grow faster skyscrapers sooner, super money park: gives you like 4 billion dollars at startup) I could never survive playing the REAL game, then you have to deal with the whole Mayor Experience (taxes, funds, strikes, money) I'd rather get a huge load of money, and construct huge realalistic cities, mostly just to look at (sounds boring, but its fun).
- Sucks alotta time out of your life (like all games do, good thing i'm not into video games)
- LOTS of determination, it takes time to make amazing cities!
- You need a hella fast computer, Sim City will take up a huge amount of space, and it needs a fast computer for all those graphics.

I dont play it anymore, no time, plus I lost the serial code number :( Oh and remember to buy the Rush Hour Expansion pack if you do buy Sim City 4, you'll defanantly need it.

Remember, I cheated, but its an amazing game, in these pics, there is a lot of custom content from trees to buildings, but its real easy to download these items (Simtropolis Exchange).

Simcity 4 is no more difficult than the previous games in the series. It requires a lot of patience, but I'm one of the most impatient people out there and I still though it was OK. I never have to cheat, and I think I wrote a guide on planning profitable cities way back - yes, building a good city requires planning! Who would have thought?

Simcity 4 is not expensive anymore either. The Deluxe Edition is now what - 20 or 30 dollars Canadian? I don't see any reason not to get it if you are a fan of the series, unless you have an even crappier computer than I do. It is best to have at least a 2 GHz processor and 512 MB RAM (my computer processor is only 1.4 GHz). Video card doesn't really matter that much.

Simcity is one of the only two games I played (the other one is CIV2). If you are a skyscraper fan, you need to buy and play.

There are so many ways to build a city...

These are reasonable (even pretty) downtown areas:

Thanks for the responses. Although I have to admit I've played the game before. I had a bootleg copy on my Mac but the screen kept on going dark (The game kept on playing fine except my view was obstructed by a bizarre blackness that made playing very frsutrating. Also the game lagged alot and at times completly jammed my computer. And I don't have a pansy-ass computer.

-So does sim city 4 just operate badly on macs?
-Does it jam the computer often?
-Is it slow and lagging even in good computers?
-Does the purchase price increase when buying the mac version?

This is the computer I have:

Considering it's one of the best games I've ever played, (and payed... for. which is rare for me, and it was the BEST 40 bucks I've ever spent), and it's only fetching 20 bucks now, I really don't understand why you'd even have to ask. Just buy the thing. If it doesn't work right you're only out 20 bucks.

Rico Rommheim Feb 21, 2008 5:07 AM

I think I'll purchase it over the inter-web. What's a good reliable site for web purchases? Or should I buy in person? Will it be cheaper?

flar Feb 21, 2008 5:43 PM

I don't have time to play it anymore, but SC4 is good. With the mods and addons from simtropolis.com it's great. Make sure you get the deluxe "rush hour" edition and go to simtropolis for mods and addons.

shane453 Feb 21, 2008 10:15 PM

I have a Macbook Pro and use the SC4 for Mac. It's more expensive, still around 50 bucks, and yes it does have some graphics problems compared to the Windows version, which I played for a year or so. For instance, certain animated elements will flicker and the buildings that are abandoned do not show their abandonment visually like they do in Windows. But I still definitely think it's worth it. Amazingly addictive game that won't disappoint especially if you're already an SC fan.

SomeFormOFhuman Feb 22, 2008 1:38 AM

Well maybe it was released more than 3 years ago, but hell it sure is still better off than the pathetic Simcity Societies. Shesh, what the hell is that game? :haha: Buy SC4 if you can.

1ajs Feb 22, 2008 2:03 AM

Lol, your city might scare people from buying it! :haha:

rapid_business Feb 22, 2008 6:14 AM

I have a barely-used copy of Sim City 4 with the Bonus Pack for Mac that I got 1.5 years ago and played maybe twice. If you want to buy, let me know. We could work out a deal.

Jarrod Feb 22, 2008 6:54 AM

I have it for my eMac. It works fine on it, but it does get a little slow once the cities get bigger... but then again, this computer is almost 3 years old now. I had it on my MacBook but it didn't really run that well.

It's worth it though. I play it all the time. I love it so much!

1ajs Feb 22, 2008 8:48 AM

Also i know the lead sc4 mac head at Simtropolis. If you need help i can put yea in touch with him

Kenneth Feb 22, 2008 11:24 AM

I bought the game because I have the previous editions. I installed it on a new computer, 512MB, 120GH, it wasnt enough, I had to add memory, which helped for awhile, but the game started blinking and cutting out, until the point that it wouldnt retain anymore graphics, so my patience has worn out. I uninstalled it weeks ago. It is very time consuming, but very interesting. Graphics are awesome, looks very real. What I thought might be a good idea is installing the game on an older model computer that you dont use for internet and other usage. This game will affect the performance of your computer programs.

Tony Feb 22, 2008 12:34 PM

I run / ran it on my current P3 933MHz, 384MB RAM computer. I runs ok, definately not at full graphics and all but hey.. it's a 7 year old machine!

Rico, what took you so long?! The game dates back to 2002!

oo i see you hit the 1.5mill wall build some sprawl lol and share some pics!

Rico Rommheim Feb 23, 2008 6:44 AM

Thank you kindly everybody. I read every single reply and took them all very seriously (investing in sc4 is costly to say the least) and I went to my local mac store....they basically told me that sc4 was finished for macs, no more being produced or sold. I didn't know it was that old, I mean back in 2002 I was playing sc3 and I only learned of sc4's existence 3 years ago! I bought AoE3 instead, cost me 60 f'in bucks! In retrospect I'm glad I didn't get it, the bootleg version I had on my computer for a few months ate up all of my free time and almost ran my hard drive to the ground! But thank you all very much!

How do you guys upload the cheats (money one) into the game? Being a college student, I'm probably killing myself by getting involved with this game, but it looks too fun to not play it for an hour a day or so.

Press CTRL + X to open the cheat window. Then type in weaknesspays, but befroe you press Enter, press and hold Left Shift. Then press Enter but without letting go of Shift, (don't take your hand off Shift until your satisfied with your savings).

navyweaxguy Feb 24, 2008 2:46 AM

So much easier just to use money parks until you have plenty in the bank.

JDRCRASH Feb 24, 2008 2:51 AM

Simcity 4 DE:

Is it limitless? Of course not.

But is it worth it? Absolutely.

Go to Simtropolis guys and you will find a treasure trove of things on the STEX!

1ajs Feb 24, 2008 3:19 AM

not just the stex theres the sc4devotion there pegisis simcity brazil
and then theres the japenize stuff

Dac150 Feb 24, 2008 8:07 PM

Are there any other cheats that give you larger amounts of money besides $1000?

If so, what are they?

Doady Feb 24, 2008 10:14 PM

When I need money I just get a loan... much easier and less time consuming...

I just started a new region, and in my only city so far that I am playing now, I have borrowed over $100,000 since I started. Now the population is 51,000 and I am making profit of over $2000 per month (the loans have been payed off). I am planning to build a subway system very soon and I might not even need to borrow any money for it.

The only time I cheat is when I want to change the name of my city or the mayor.

Matty Feb 24, 2008 11:10 PM

^ Same here... why always cheat?

1ajs Feb 25, 2008 12:06 AM

depends on what kinda city and how fast you wana build it matty

vid Feb 25, 2008 4:00 AM

There is a plug in from Simtropolis that lets you start off with 100,000,000. It's really hard to run that out.

Doady Feb 25, 2008 8:03 AM

Simcity 4 is not worth the money after all. I just wasted two hours building a huge subway system TWICE (once after reload) and it has ZERO riders. Wow. Once more and I going smash the CD's and throw the pieces in the garbage.

See? Money is not the a problem in SC4 at all. I'm making $2.5k a month, but I can't a single rider on my subway system.

1ajs Feb 25, 2008 1:35 PM

bahaah perhaps you need some mods...... like the NAM (Network Add on Mod) installer avail for both windows and mac on simtropolis

If you've built a town of 20,000 and have subways linking residential areas to each other, of course. Generally, one has to have a bus service at capacity before subways are a good idea.

Cities don't build subways just because they're cool. They build subways because they're necessary. And in that aspect, Simcity4 is like real life.

Doady Feb 25, 2008 6:44 PM

^ Even if that was the case, my subway system should not have zero riders. It's as if the game doesn't recognize that the subway is there. I need a subway right now because my roads are congested like mad. My city is 51,000, and half the population already uses the bus; but a good bus service means nothing if the roads are congested. I am starting to get the dreaded "No Job" signs.

Btw, I already have NAM. And also the Road-top Mass Transit addon. I suspect it might be bug with the Road-top addon, I will have to experiment.

Dac150 Feb 25, 2008 8:52 PM

How do you upload the $25 million mod from simtropolis into the game?

Evo5Boise Mar 2, 2008 7:35 PM

I enjoy Simcity 4. I don't know why but I actually have found myself playing SC3 more lately though. I think the main thing that throws me off is all the little squares where you have to start new cities. Sure, I understand the idea and actually like it, however, I think they put too many. I would rather work on one large city with a few outside squares or "suburbs".

suggestion find a map on st you like create a folder for it create your own index.bmp file that a couple pixels by a couple pixels

1 small region is 1 pixel red
medium 2x2 pixels green
large 4x4 pixels blue

and you can actually come back and ad onto it on the bottom and to the right on your maps thats what i have done with mine witch originally was the London map...

HoosierGuy317 Mar 6, 2008 2:22 AM

I got Sim City 4 on Deluxe for about $15 on Amazon. If you have a Mac it's like $53 though.

BlueWolfer May 24, 2008 2:54 AM

If you're on Sim City 3000 it's a big jump to get into the new 3d 'ish graphics you'll love getting Sim City 4 especially with all the cool downloads you can get off simcity it's a million times better than ALL the previous simcity games!

I can't live without cheat: youdon'tdeserveit and I can't live without the park (downloaded from Simtropolis) Simolean Trees, one of them which gives you WAY MORE THAN ENOUGH MONEY (basically infinite) per month. =)

3000 bucks over a game, thats how awesome it is.

HansonNY May 25, 2008 3:06 AM

SimCity 4 is a great game (for those interested in urban sim games) and is the best one on the market.

I haven't gotten tired of playing it and I bought it when it first came out.

1ajs May 25, 2008 4:17 AM

i had to beg my parents for it when it came out took 6months lol... back when i had a 300mmhz underclocked to 266 cause it was undstable at 300mhz and it had 64megs of ram runing win xp.. with a 16meg voodoo2 video card lol sc4 ran but it laged like crazy but it ran :P so my dad started brining home number 4 teck cable so i sat there every night and striped all the insulation off and took it in once a week till i had enuff money to buy parts to build a new system took a month built it used it for a while maxed it out then sence then i have spent much money on my computer... just keep trading up for better hardware with my friend lol

Tony Jun 9, 2008 8:01 PM
