I looked up that Lexcoat website expecting it to be a stucco company, but it turns out their product is a spray that protects buildings/houses from mold/bacteria, etc. phewph...
Although I'm sure the stucco has yet to arrive.

Cambridgite Dec 4, 2007 3:03 PM

It looks like a car dealership.

SteelTown Dec 4, 2007 3:07 PM

It was a Ford car dealership lol, it's being converted into a Hotel.

DC83 Dec 31, 2007 4:24 PM

They've started putting windows in which means they'll most likely start the interior work.

I'm still curious as to what material they'll be using on the exterior?

flar Dec 31, 2007 8:18 PM

stucco probably

I predict HPL Cladding Panels
http://www.trespa.com/na/binary/TRPR..._tcm9-9398.jpg

DC83 Jan 2, 2008 4:26 PM

^^ Ya, I had originally thought they were going to get rid of the cladding. But now it seems that they're not removing any cladding from the round part, so it makes me think they'll reinstall more? I hope not... but Stucco aint that great either!

It looks like the remaining cladding from its dealership days will disappear in the coming days. If you look closely, one of the panels has already been removed, and there looks to be the new cladding already in place in the alcoved second floor immediately south of the circular atrium.

raisethehammer Jan 3, 2008 2:55 PM

this may end up being one ugly building.

SteelTown Jan 3, 2008 3:16 PM

^ It's better than an empty car dealership in the core. Plus really Days Inn isn't known for high quality appearance.

DC83 Jan 3, 2008 3:24 PM

^^ I agree with Steeltownl; it's better than another empty bldg or lot.
It may not be the pretiest, but at least it's development!!

realcity Jan 3, 2008 3:59 PM

add 15 floors to it and I'll take it. Really? two floors is all that's justified in a city so deficient of hotel rooms and on Main Street.

Before it was a Ford dealership is was a Jaguar, Rover and Astin Martin dealership. It shows how much wealth used to be in this city.

raisethehammer Jan 3, 2008 5:03 PM

i suppose it is better than sitting empty for years, but let's hope we don't see too many more projects like this downtown. for now, though, I'll take it. ugliness and all. lol.

vid Jan 3, 2008 5:24 PM

Damn, I should have made a thread like this for our Days Inn!! :(

:P

chris k Jan 3, 2008 6:25 PM

Done properly, i don't think it will look that bad.

There might even be space for a balcony of some sort if you look at the pictures theres room to the left of the circular glass room. Perhaps an outdoor summer restaurant or probably just a suite.

flar Jan 3, 2008 6:45 PM

You can't expect much architecturally from a Days Inn, they just offer affordable accomodations.

raisethehammer Jan 9, 2008 7:01 PM

holy crap...there is nice red brick on the bottom few feet of the building now.
i assume stucco will go on the rest.

raisethehammer Jan 11, 2008 6:28 PM

I gotta say, no matter what they do to the top 3/4 of this building, it's going to look better than imagined. good stuff.

CCF Jan 11, 2008 6:31 PM

Two floors?!

ya, it'll look way better than rusty, old, crusted metal cladding for sure!

I'll have to walk by on my way home from the bus stop 2nite... I want to see the brick they're using.

SteelTown Jan 11, 2008 6:50 PM

hahaha I should, eh!? IF it's not raining!! haha

I'm actually house-sitting my mom's place in Upper Stoney Creek (Heritage Green) next week. Should I bring my camera up there, too? I can keep us all updated as to how many new parking lots w/ boxes they've put in :D

Sadly, I think an Upper Stoney Creek photo-tour would have more life & pedestrians in general than the Mississauga City Centre thread by Flar! haha
People actually DO walk up there... they just don't walk across Mud St as it's now a Highway :s

Rico Rommheim Jan 11, 2008 7:26 PM

Ah...the exciting urban developments in downtown hamilton! :haha:

raisethehammer Jan 11, 2008 7:34 PM

no need to laugh...we know this is lame. check the rest of the downtown projects. it was either this or an empty lot for the next decade. it's a friggin days inn, what do you want??

Yea you should do Heritage Green. There's suppose to be a transit terminal at Heritage Green.

DC83 Jan 11, 2008 8:04 PM

^^ The only "terminal" I'm aware of up there is the Valley Park loop. That's where the Parkdale parks & connects to the Stonechurch. I remember when the Upper Kenilworth used to come all the way up there.

Ok, I'll try my best to remember the cam! haha

matt602 Jan 12, 2008 7:59 AM

Wow that brick looks like it's gonna be pretty nice.

chris k Jan 12, 2008 5:13 PM

Nice brick but if thats th "brick" skirt of the building, that might me the most akward height for this as it goes over the first floor window. Usually a stone skirt is only like 3 feet high. Well i guess we will see what happens

LikeHamilton Feb 20, 2008 5:53 PM

Are we sure this is going to be a Days Inn? I was just in their reservation system and I decided to see if it is in there for late August and in is still not in their system.

fastcarsfreedom Feb 20, 2008 5:56 PM

LikeHamilton I doubt it is unusual--particularly for a system as large as Days Inn. They have dozens of locations coming into (and going out) of their system every month. Once things become more firm I'm sure you'll see that location loaded into their reservation system.

markbarbera Feb 20, 2008 7:39 PM

It appears that they have just about completed the prep work to hang the new wall cladding. No doubt waiting for a break in the weather to start it.

fastcarsfreedom Feb 20, 2008 9:29 PM

Good--more hotel rooms means more tax revenue and fewer folks staying outside the city.

LikeHamilton Mar 3, 2008 5:08 PM

They are putting on the outside of the Days Inn a yellow board on board siding. It looks like that composite siding that has the colour right through it, never need painting and looks like wood.

Thanks for the update, LikeHamilton. I like the skirt on this bldg... I'm still curious as to what material they're going to use on the rounded part in the front?
We'll have to wait and see, I guess. Maybe not too long if we can manage to get this winter weather over with! hahaha

SteelTown Mar 3, 2008 5:13 PM

Oh that's not a bad siding, kinda looks like wood. A good pick to go with the red bricks. Thanks for the update!

raisethehammer Mar 13, 2008 7:43 PM

yea, that same siding is being used on the front too...not bad.

Probably an exposed staircase like they had at the old Gulliver's Travels Hotel on Centennial.

Gullivers! That place was a gem--another place that faded away without much fanfare--probably the most classic "motor hotel" in the city--and how do you beat a place that had a restaurant called the Lilliputian Room.

matt602 Mar 25, 2008 2:19 AM

That was originally a hotel? I thought it was always a car dealership.

It was! The last one there was Westgate Ford.

Gulliver's Travels Hotel was a hotel at Centennial and Queenston Road. It was torn down in the 80's(?) to make way for a plaza.

Update 02 Apr.

Yes LikeHamilton--I'm thinking Gullivers was demo-ed around '86 or '87 to make way for "Gulliver Square" the Hy & Zels-anchored plaza.
