US Airlines Livery Showdown

Of the seven largest domestic US airlines, which one has the best looking plane livery (i.e. paint scheme, logo, etc.)?
American, Continental, Delta, Northwest, Southwest, United or US Airways?

Generally, I am referring to their main (most widely used) liveries and not their special/limited edition ones.

The new Delta is nice & clean but I'm starting to like the "billowing" tail Delta livery which hasn't lasted long and never made it fleet wide...

http://members.aol.com/MSMphoto/Dragon/drw55198.jpg

vertex Apr 13, 2007 4:39 PM

I can appreciate Delta trying to revamp the look, but I think the size and the weight/stroke-width of the logotype they are using is too small and thin, especially on a white background. It will be harder to spot the plane from a concourse or control tower. Plus, the paint scheme looks too much like the newer U.S. Airways.

trvlr70 Apr 13, 2007 5:11 PM

I think AA's silver belly will always make it the classiest. I hope they never change that.

vertex Apr 13, 2007 5:17 PM

It's unpainted/exposed aluminum, I think.

I wonder how much lighter the plane is with so little paint, or if it affects drag.

PHX602 Apr 13, 2007 5:26 PM

Air Canada's theory is that removing the paint will reduce the airplane's weight by as much as 360 pounds, which will make taking off easier and reduce expenses by an estimated $24,000 per airplane every year.

This is US Airways new livery.

Although I do like United's new livery.

After seeing that chart at the top of the page, I'm reminded of how awesome Song was. What a shame.

I'd have to pick that one as well!

And so, it looks like the majority of votes went to United!

TheMeltyMan Apr 14, 2007 12:21 AM

United yo.

seaskyfan Apr 14, 2007 12:30 AM

I like American - very clean.

Not on the list but a personal favorite is Alaskan.

nbrindley Apr 14, 2007 12:49 AM

I like Northwest's white livery up close, the white is a very nice pearlescent paint. Shame you can't tell from a distance or in pictures. I voted for US Airways, though if it didn't have the light gray lines, I probably wouldn't have. Delta's new colors are a close second.

sammyk Apr 14, 2007 1:51 AM

GSTom1, the first picture in your original post, the diagram of all the planes, is that available in poster form somewhere?

The Chemist Apr 14, 2007 3:27 AM

My favourite has got to be United's new livery.

The new US livery and the Deltaflot livery are pretty good too.

GSTom1 Apr 14, 2007 4:32 AM

IMO, the old United livery is ugly. I never liked the grey paint scheme. The new United livery is quite nice. I also like the new US Airway livery. Too bad they didn't keep any of the colorful elements of America West Airlines when they merged.

What do you guys think of the new Delta livery?

I'm not sure if you can order that poster yet (it sounds like they're still working on it), but you can contact Feenixx Publishing, Inc. here:

Delta’s current livery is the best, and song's is pretty good too. Is that airline still around?

cabasse Apr 14, 2007 3:31 PM

^ delta's new livery is almost too similar (imo) to united's new job. otherwise, i like it, notably the tail and the new font/red delta.

northwest has always been my favorite, even before i moved up to detroit.

i also can say i appreciate american airlines unpainted silver, although their logo's a bit bland to me. i also like continental's globe.

John F Apr 14, 2007 4:13 PM

Another US Domestic airline that's gaining traction but is small and a low-fare carrier is Allegiant. Here's the Livery:

nomarandlee Apr 14, 2007 7:31 PM

I guess it would be United. The new livery is solid hough the U is too large on the tail fin (and it was too small on the previous livery). A little bit of red would have also helped. For some reason I loved the 80's United oragen/blue scheme.

Internationaly I would have to go with South African Airways. The tail fin on those planes are so killer.

Lexy Apr 14, 2007 8:45 PM

The new US Airways livery is really nice IMO. But American gets my vote. Simple, easy to see, and very easy to recognize.

As for International carriers, China Airlines from Taiwan gets my vote hands down IMO. Each tail is hand painted on their crafts. That, to me, is priceless works of art.

I liked the dark blue of US Airways but the new one is nice, Delta sort of copied but I like it too. United is good, but American looks dated, though they should never lose the silver body.

Eigenwelt Apr 16, 2007 7:02 PM

I prefer the classic American Airlines look. Shiny metal always gets my vote. The new United scheme is sharp however.

United is number 1, period. The new colours are simply amazing, I love that tail fin that reminds me of a bunny's little booty. So cute.

US Air would be number 2 domestically.

Internationally, I like China Airlines (from Taiwan not CHINA) as the best livery. A very beautiful girl coming from the beautiful island of Formosa Taiwan, awesome site indeed everytime I see her land/take off in Vancouver.

United would be second internationally and Air Canada would be third.
