Concession Street
Concession St. is located on the East Mountain in Hamilton, Ontario. The Niagara Escarpment divides the city into upper and lower halves. The lower city developed first, but as the city expanded, development occurred on "The Mountain". Concession Street is the oldest business district on the mountain, dating back to the early 1900's. Today Concession St. is home to about 120 retail shops and services, Henderson General Hospital and the Hamilton Regional Cancer Centre. Dundas
Historic town of 25,000, western suburb of Hamilton, setting for numerous movies and TV shows. First settled in the late 1700's, Dundas is situated in a large valley surrounded by the Niagara Escarpment. The Durand Neighbourhood
This is one of Hamilton's best kept secrets. Durand is situated at the foot of the Niagara Escarpment, just southwest of Downtown Hamilton. Not merely a couple of streets with nice homes--Durand is over 40 city blocks of incredible homes. Many architectural styles can be seen among these late nineteenth and early twentieth century stately homes and mansions. Stoney Creek
The Hamilton Series continues with Stoney Creek (pop. 60,000). This is an eastern suburb of Hamilton on the south shore of Lake Ontario. Stoney Creek was first settled just after the American Revolution by United Empire Loyalists. Kenilworth Ave.
This is a series of photos I took on Kenilworth Avenue in Hamilton. I forgot about these pics, which is appropriate because I think the city forgot about this street too: it was really dirty, and the flower planters had weeds growing out of them and the massive wooden utility poles stand out. There's a strong Eastern European presence around Kenilworth. Westdale
Continuing my Hamilton series, here's Westdale. Founded in the late 1920's as one of Canada's first planned communities, Westdale has become one of Hamilton's most desirable neighbourhoods. It is centred on Westdale Village (an upscale shopping area), bordered on the north by Cootes Paradise (a nature reserve), on the West by McMaster University and on the East by the Chedoke Expressway. Westdale was intended to be an upscale White Anglo-Saxon Protestant enclave. Early homeowners were required to sign a covenant prohibiting them from selling to non-whites and non-protestants (including Catholics and Jews). Fortunately this practice has ended and anyone can enjoy living in the beautiful homes of Westdale. Ancaster
A suburb on the west side of Hamilton, Ancaster (pop: 35,000) was founded in the 1790's. Ancaster is unique, it doesn't look like a typical southern Ontario town. There are many old stone buildings and its older residential areas are set in rolling hills and with an abundance of trees, small brooks and waterfalls. Jamesville
Jamesville is an historic neighbourhood along James St. North. There is a real old world feel here with the colourful homes, lush gardens, outdoor markets and bustling pedestrian traffic. Many languages are spoken in Jamesville, especially Italian and Portuguese. In recent years it has also become the centre of Hamilton's arts community. The Textile District
By the 1920's, massive industrial expansion and an influx of immigrants caused Hamilton to grow eastward. Ottawa Street, along with Barton St. E. and Kenilworth Ave, became the main commercial streets in East Hamilton. While Barton and Kenilworth have been in decline for many years, Ottawa St. has found a niche in home decor, textiles and sewing supplies. I find his pics best represent the city I see everyday of my life as opposed to commercial or tourism photograhy. I've long hated the fact that the outside world doesn't see the real Hamilton. Flar's photos show exactly that IMO - the real, everyday Hamilton. No more, no less. |
Throwing in Dundas really makes it seem much nicer.. although Dundas is part of Hamilton, I dont really consider it so.

I guess it depends where in Hamilton you live. I rarely see any crappy areas in my daily routine. I live in a beautiful valley surrounded by conservation areas, trails and waterfalls. The escarpment hardly ever leaves my view, I see it out the window at home and office. My bus ride takes me down a street of million dollar homes. For me it's by far the nicest place I've ever lived. I guess it'd be a different story if I lived on Cannon St. but I never have reason to go there except to take pictures.
Although people in Dundas have "Dundas Forever" signs, that's more for political reasons (anti-amalgamation), they know it's inextricably linked to Hamilton. The boundary between Dundas and Hamilton is arbitrary (part of McMaster is in Dundas!). |
This is a moving portrait of a city I grew up outside of and in, and subsequently lived in for a period of time in my adult years. Your photo series has made me look afresh at a place I've always had a love-hate relationship with, but will also always be bound to by history and by blood. It has hit home.
