chicago skyline shots from the other side of lake michigan are always fun.
you need really clear air and a pretty powerful telephoto lens to fully capture the effect. and a bit of elevation gain from the numerous large sand dunes over there also helps. i'm quite fond of this one: http://investigate-nasa.com/wp-conte...10/chicago.jpg source: http://investigate-nasa.com/2015/11/...ve-calculator/ |
^ Heck, this is incredible... Nothing short of splendid. Love how both the lake and the sun do justice to it.

Winston-Salem:
This was taken near the Tennessee state line, about 85 miles / 137 kilometres west-northwest from downtown Winston-Salem. It is the longest distance photograph I have of the Winston-Salem's skyline. http://i.imgur.com/VYaqAs0.jpg Credit |
I don't have a photo but I can see Downtown Houston from the edge of Harris County on a freeway overpass.

It's from much further out than that. It's from western Ashe County. The distance was so impressive, it was in a news story, several years ago. You can see layers of mountains increasing in height. From what I've seen, you need a very clear day, the sun likely has to be on the other side of the skyline (notice most of these are just shadows from the back of the skyscrapers with a rising or setting sun behind them), and you need an amazing lens.
Winston-Salem: View from Fancy Gap, Virginia, taken by SSP/SSC forum member Flash. I found this on SSC, if I remember correctly? It's clear enough to identify the individual buildings. It's 46 miles / 75 kilometres. http://i.imgur.com/2DRd45I.jpg Has anyone tried to photograph Winston-Salem from West Virginia? The photograph above is about half-way to West Virginia. Something that surprises me: The Hawthorne Hill Skyline in Winston-Salem never shows-up in distance views? It should be to the right of downtown in the skyline view above. It must be hidden in a valley, behind the tall ridges in the city? |

Not sure if this is far, far or just far. This is mine of Chicago from the western suburb of Oak Brook, about 15 miles.

Here you go... skylines as viewed from Mars.
And Mars is typically 141 million miles away. Meanwhile, the diameter, and note the diameter of the universe (not including volume) is 5.5×10^23 miles. Point being, we are nothing really. For some deep analysis, check out or type "drake equation". https://randread.com/wp-content/uplo...936_fig1.0.jpg Credit: RandRead |

Winter sunset over Miami from a departing cruise ship

Missing are some skyscrapers over 500+ feet | 152+ meters tall that have been completed , topped off or still under construction since then including the new tallest Panorama tower, Echo Brickell, 1000 Museum among others. http://www.skyscrapercenter.com/comp...t=Show+Results |

That's a excellent shot. I remember taking a cruise out of Fort Lauderdale 3 years ago, and for a good two hours or so, traveling down the peninsula, it was a silhouette of towers in the horizon. Usually I'll take them out of Bayonne (been on 17 cruises in my life), but F.Lauderdale offers some nice skyline gazing opportunities when headed to the Caribbean. S.Florida's coast is one giant skyline. Probably the longest in the nation in terms of sheer mileage. Although taking it out of Bayonne, going underneath the Verrazano is epic. |

You know I love this stuff....
I'm working on a website that specifically tackles this topic (skylines from far away, and mountains also). The site isn't finished, but is functional enough to be useful to this topic :). TheViewShed (filtered by confirmed skyline shots only) Have a play with the filters etc, images missing is normal, working through these sorts of things now. |
Phily and NY from afar. 1st one is from Eagle Rock Reservation. BTW, which is a great place to go during winter. On a clear day, it's stunning.

I started to say beautiful sunset, but that would be sunrise, right? Whichever, that's a gorgeous pic.

Anyways, the 40+ mile shots are what I'd be really interested in. The shore of St Catharines and Niagara on the Lake are about 31 miles from Toronto, and it looks like you should definitely be able to see Toronto from quite a bit further if you can get to a high enough elevation because you see Toronto quite well from those locations. You see it even better from a greater distance atop the Niagara escarpment in St Catharines and Hamilton which is about 37 miles. Niagara Falls would be 42 miles, I haven't been up the towers there but I'd imagine you should be able to see Toronto from there reasonably well still considering you can see Niagara Falls from Oakville (39 miles) despite the Niagara Falls buildings being much shorter than Toronto's. You can even see Niagara Falls from pretty much lake level in Oakville, so if you can get to the top of the towers in NF which are on top of the escarpment (so maybe 800 ft above the lake) the Earth's curvature won't get in the way nearly as much as looking at NF from Oakville's waterfront. Looking from some of the high-rises in Buffalo or K-W would be really cool, that would be over 50 miles. At that distance the sub-skylines of the Golden Horseshoe would stack so that they would appear like a continuous skyline from Scarborough to Mississauga (you already have that effect from St Catharines). |

Toronto from Hamilton. Roughly 37 miles or 59 Kilometers as the crow flies.

Interesting video.
The comments on the video are symptomatic of what one sees these days with so many YouTube videos. No wonder so many video posters turn off comments. There are just too many trolls out there. |
